If you missed it, the actor playing the guy with the chestburster is in fact John Hurt, who was the original actor to get chestbursted in Alien, which is why he said "Oh no! Not again!" John Hurt hated the scene so much he swore he'd never do comedy again.

Mel Brooks said that the genius of the movie is that it was written on two different levels: the adults would find humor in the parody of the movie and the kids would be engaged with the story and characters. I think that's what makes the movie so beloved.

I was a kid when this came out on VHS and a STAR WARS fan. And it was the funniest thing we'd ever seen. I still laugh like a goddamn loon at this movie and I've seen it at least 100 times. We saw the humor immediately, it didn't go over our heads (except for the "bet she gives great helmet" joke).

@@highstimulation2497 I just looked it up again, the source says that the doll scene was not in the original script, however, it says that Rick Moranis improvised the scene, but that the idea for the scene came from Mel. As such, I will edit my comment above by changing the word "created" to the word "improvised". "...The scene in which Dark Helmet is playing with his dolls was not in the script. Director Mel Brooks came up with the idea on the set one day and told it to Rick Moranis, who then improvised the entire scene, including the dialogue." Duaffy, when you said that the head of Megamaid reminded you of the Statue of Liberty, you were not wrong. The payoff comes near the end of the movie where the head and arm of Megamaid land on the planet. It's an homage to the 1968 "Planet of the Apes." The drummer alludes to Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra," featured in "2001: A Space Odyssey". The chest burster scene in the diner featured John Hurt, who starred in the first "Alien" movie. That's why he says, "Oh no, not again." His character was the victim of a face hugger, then a chest burster.

Three things: the joke about passing Jupiter 2 wasn't a reference to the 5th planet in our solar system. It was, in fact, a reference to the name of the spaceship in the 1960's Irwin Allen sci-fi TV series "Lost in Space". Second, the ludicrous speed joke has nothing to do with the rapper of the same name. Ludicrous means really ridiculous so it was just a name for a super fast speed beyond light speed. Finally, you were right that Spaceball One looked like the Statue of Liberty as when the head crashes into the beach and the ape men showed up on horseback...that joke was referencing the original Planet of the Ape movies with Charlton Heston of the late 1960s.

I've heard that Mel Brooks was willing to make a Spaceballs sequel ONLY if Rick Moranis would return as Dark Helmet (the thing is that Moranis retired from acting in the middle of the 90's after his wife died in cancer and he wanted to raise and take care of their kids. He mostly did voice acting in the early 2000's and he's been offered to return in many of his well known roles but always turned it down. One or two years ago he actually returned to acting by being in a commercial with Ryan Reynolds and he's apparently gonna be in a reboot of Honey, I Shrunk The Kids). But now Mel Brooks is actually gonna do a sequel to History of the World, part 1 (which will be his 1st directing movie since Dracula: Dead and Loving It from 1995).

They guy doing the sound effects for the radar is Michael Winslow. He got noticed in the Police Academy movies. He was so good at sound effects that he did most of the sounds in this movie. There is a clip of him at a talk show doing a Led Zeppelin song where he does all the sounds except the acoustic guitar being played on the couch beside him. It's not long, but it's worth looking up. Ludicrous Speed is a performance setting on Tesla Cars, because of this movie. I rarely comment on stuff like this, but that little dance in the diner scene was adorable. The end of the movie with the apes on horses was from the original Planet of the Apes. There were 5 total, the first one was good, and a must see if for no other reason to get the parody jokes.

Tropic Thunder, South Park, Rick and Morty, It's Always Sunny, basically anything with Will Ferrell, etc., etc., etc. Feel free to stack that up against the film and TV offerings of your mythical "golden age of free comedy" that was the '80s. Is "Perfect Strangers" or "Full House" your idea of free-wheeling vicious satire? The whole concept is just whining by white boys that they didn't get to pass-off stupid lazy stereotypes as "comedy" or be the only voices in the room any more, and the results of the move have been way better and far riskier comedy from a much wider variety of viewpoints. I defy you to demonstrate otherwise. It's particularly stupid that you'd make this comment under a Mel Brooks work, as he battled exactly the kind of white-supremacist nonsense you're pushing to get both his voice and those of other marginalized groups heard.

I loved this movie as a kid and still laugh at it a lot, but with a few years behind me, I realize that it's not nearly as sophisticated as some of Mel Brooks' other comedy films. It remains near and dear to my heart, however, and I hope it's found a special place in yours. My favourite exchange: "What's your name?" "Barf." "Your full name!" "Barfolomew!"

The Alien at the end is a callback to a Warner Brothers cartoon about a signing and dancing frog. Man finds a frog, it suddenly puts on a top hat and cane then starts dancing and singing that song. Man thinks he'll get rich in showbiz. Frog stays a frog in public but starts the routine the man is alone. Repeat many more times for laughs. The Frog was also an early mascot of the Warner Brothers TV network but was quickly dropped.

George Lucas told Mel Brooks, that his one stipulation was that Lone Star couldn't be dressed as Han Solo. So, Mel Brooks dressed him as Harrison Fords other iconic character, Indiana Jones.

Did you recognize actor John Hurt from _Alien_ ? The same actor had a baby alien burst out of his chest in both _Alien_ and _Spaceballs_ , which was why he said "Oh, no! Not again!" It's funny how they got a Sigourney Weaver (Ripley) lookalike there, too.

The movie is a spoof of several different well-known movies. Off hand there was Star Wars, Star Trek, The Wizard of Oz, Planet of the Apes, Abbot and Costello skits, and off course; Alien. You'll surely notice that the actor, John Hurt, who had the chest-burster scene in Alien reprised his role for this movie.

The church they used is a real church, actor Dick Van Patton was a member and suggested they use it. Still looks exactly the same. grimmlifecollective does "Then & Now" filming location videos and uploaded one on Spaceballs about a month ago (March 2022). They also visit famous graves as well as the homes and graves of serial killers like Lizzy Borden and Ed Geins. A couple of years ago they took a private tour of horror F/X legend Tom Savini's house...each of his bedrooms is a different horror movie theme. You would like their channel.

Great fun reactions, Duaffy!👏🏽I know you got the parody of "Alien". The other one with the Statue of Liberty and the the apes near the end is "Planet of the Apes" (1968). If you are looking for a very good comedy, I suggest "Office Space" (1999). You might want to add it to a Patreon poll.

"Schwarz" (without a "t") is German for "black", but here, "schwartz" is probably a rendering of the Yiddish word שואַרץ (shvarts), which also means "black". As you may know Brooks is Jewish, and in his film "Blazing Saddles" there is even a scene in which he plays a Yiddish speaking Indian chief.

As for the restaurant, it's actually called Pizza Hut. Yep, you nailed it. :) And speaking of restaurants, there is one called Kentucky Fried Chicken which sells, obviously, chicken, and was founded by Colonel Sanders... a name that, if you look at the movie, may seem familiar. "What's the matter Colonel Sandurz, chicken?" As for the 'talented' person with the noises, his name is Michael Winslow, and you can see him again in the Police Academy movies (which are also comedies and the first two or three aren't so bad... and... well... then there's 4, 5, 6, and 7...). Not sure if you understood the Spaceballs landing in the head of Mega Maid, but it'd make more sense if you watched a very old movie called 'Planet of the Apes'. As for 'Schwartz'... that was the last name of Mel Brooks' lawyer. So... never underestimate the power of the Schwartz.

In order to understand the joke with the human-like apes and the Statue of Liberty on the beach, you'll have to watch the sci-fi classic _Planet of the Apes_ (1968). It's part of a huge and very famous plot twist in that movie from Rod Serling, who also created the TV series _The Twilight Zone_ .
