Season 3 was kind of a watershed moment for the series as some of the cast felt that Gene Roddenberry has kind of stepped away from his more hands involvement of the show during the previous seasons. Reportedly Gene was trying mediate the dissesntion between Shatner and Nimoy about who was the star of the show and also the reduced budget for the third season along with rumors of the show being cancelled at the end of the season. Many Star Trek fans felt that season 3 was the weakest with some of its stories and production values being below par of the first two seasons. So its not uncommon for fans to feel that many episodes of the last season were hit and miss ( probably more miss ). There is also an interesting blooper at the end "Lights of Zetar" when Kirk, Spock and McCoy are talking about Mira if you look closely at Spock's right elbow you'll see what appears to be a crumpled up newspaper in the adjacent room. That was inadvertently left by someone go ahead and rewatch that scene and see if you can spot it.

@@TheNoiseySpectator All I can say is that for decades the fandom has considered it to be Starfleet's ELB (Emergency Locator Beacon) but it could be a perimeter tripwire mode. Since Losira wasn't a person or machine, it's not that surprising it didn't detect her....if it was acting as a proximity alarm.

A matter-antimatter explosion of the warp engines may have been powerful enough to vaporize the ship leaving no debris, just a plasma and radiation. Google's AI thinks this is the case since it responded to my question about this as follows: "Yes, a warp core explosion in Star Trek could vaporize a ship due to the massive release of energy."

@@lazyperfectionist1 My short answer is that I don't really know. Here are some of my thoughts on your question. According to The Original Series (TOS) writers' guide, the effective range of a transporter is 40,000 km. For reference, earth geosynchronous orbit is 35,786 km. To be in transporter range at any time, the ship would want to be in geosynchronous orbit above the landing party so they don't have to transport them through the entire bulk of the planet. Let's assume the ship is orbiting at 36,000 km. At that altitude there is so low density of atoms, that there would be virtually know medium to propagate a shock wave from the explosion to the planet's atmosphere, so the only effect on the atmosphere will be from the radiation, both electromagnetic and particle radiation. The radiation density from the explosion will fall off proportionally to 1/range^2. Compared to the radiation intensity at the half-width of the Enterprise of 0.06 km, the radiation at 36,000 km away will be lower by a factor of about (0.06km/36,000km)^2 which is about 3e-12. Unfortunately, I don't know what the actual radiation intensity (irradiance) at the edge of the ship would be from a warp core explosion, but it would have to be more than about 450 teraWatts/m^2 in order for the radiation intensity at the planets atmosphere to be greater than the total solar radiation intensity (irradiance) at the earth's atmosphere of 1,361 Watts/m^2. (I used the solar irradiance at the earth's atmosphere under the assumption that much less than that would not produce a significant effect on the atmosphere and much more than that would.) The total radiant power from the explosion would have to be greater than about pi*(450e12)*(60m)^2 = 5E18 Watts = 5 ExaWatts to significantly effect the planets atmosphere. Since I do not know how much power would be produced by the warp core explosion, I cannot tell whether 5 ExaWatts is small or large compared to the power produced by a warp core explosion.

@@lazyperfectionist1 I tried to reply with some calculations, but KZfaq deleted my reply. The short answer is I don't know, but there are some reasons why it may not damage the atmosphere: 1. The max transporter range is 40,000 km. 2. If they were in geosynchronous orbit so that they stay over the area of the planet where the landing party is so that they don't have to transport them through the bulk of the planet if the ship happened to be on the other side of the planet when they wanted to beam up, that would be about 36,000 km altitude for an earthlike planet with the same rotation rate as the earth. At that range, the radiation intensity from the event would be about a factor of 3E-12 lower than at the perimeter of the Enterprise, and the plasma particle density would be a factor of about 1E-15 lower than when the plasma diameter was the width of the ship. 3. Because the atomic/molecular density is so low at an altitude of 36,000 km, the shock wave from the event could not propagate through space to the planet's atmosphere, and could only reach the planet when the plasma ball had expanded to a diameter of about 36,000 km to interact with the atmosphere. By that time the intensity of the shock wave would have been attenuated by the expansion of the shock wave throughout the expanding plasma and by the reduction in particle density in the expanding plasma. The expanding plasma would also cool down due to the expansion. However, I do not know if the radiation intensity, shock wave intensity, plasma density, and plasma temperature will have become low enough due to the expansion from the source to the atmosphere to not damage the atmosphere.

Yes. Someone needed to tell the writers that when calculating estimates, it is poor scientific and engineering practice to report the estimate with more precision than is warranted by the uncertainties in the estimate since that would make the estimate seem more accurate than it is. The way they write Spock doing this with his estimates and correcting others when they do not do this, makes Spock seem foolish to scientists and engineers and insufferable to others. My professors in physics and engineering courses in the '70s and '80s often chastised students for reporting estimates with more precision than warranted. I read that Roddenberry contracted with Harvey P. Lynn, Jr., a RAND Corporation physicist, to provide technical advice for a nominal fee. So, shame on Harvey for not informing Roddenberry about reporting precision for estimates or shame on Roddenberry for not taking Harvey's advice on this if Harvey had informed him of this. The writers were also inconsistent with Spock getting or not getting joking word play, with him not only getting it in some episodes, but also using such word play himself in some episodes, and then in other episodes not getting it because of being too literal. I know that a lot of the inconsistencies between episodes are due to different writers writing different episodes, but Gene Roddenberry and D.C. Fontana should have enforced more consistency in the story editing process. That being said, Star Trek TOS was better at being scientifically plausible based on extrapolating from the science knowledge of the time than most other sci-fi shows at the time, and overall, Spock's character was mostly consistent throughout the series, excluding the two pilot episodes.

@@kunserndsittizen2655 That's true, but when he did the overly precise estimate thing with Kirk, it was clear that Kirk was amused by it and as Spock's superior officer, Kirk did not have to take Spock's irrelevant precision seriously. In this and some other episodes, when he does it in correcting and chastising subordinates who have to take it seriously, he is not only being insufferable, but also requiring them to do something that is not advisable in science and engineering.

3rd season gets a lot of the characters wrong

@@dug3557 true. The acting got worse too. Everyone makes fun of Shatner’s acting but he was really great in the first 2 seasons then got hammy in the 3rd and then on. Nimoy’s Spock wasn’t charming either.
