Is the IT department physically & socially cut off from the rest of the building?
@Varksterable
@Varksterable 3 ай бұрын
@@DavidZ4-gg3dmUsually both. At least. Socially, physically, mentally, financially, metaphysically. Anything ending in "lly" is cut out for IT workers. Yes; "wi" too. They do immensely complex hard work that nobody else really understands. And which changes the world. What a weird society we have formed. ^H They have formed.

We’ve just moved to a new building and the put our office over the canteen, next to the AC plant. The offices, production floor and the server room are in the building opposite. Now we appreciate people are less likely to bother us in person but now get frantic phone calls and have to go over to the building in the pissing down of rain ever 20 minutes. Some how everyone has forgot we supported them remotely at for 8 months and now 3 days a week for the last 3 years but when they are in office they need roadside assistance, just for us to restart their computer that they haven’t restarted in 6 sodding months! 🤨

I have a friend who does IT stuff for hospitals. He once had to drive 3 and a half miles to turn on a power switch that 3 separate people had assured him was already on and it must be something else. When he saw the switch was off, he dragged all 3 of those people into the room to show them. He turned it on and everything was working fine. He also confirmed that turning a device off and back on again fixes like 80% of computer issues.

So pleased you are reacting to the "IT Crowd," Megan. For me, this is one of best comedies ever! Moss has got to be the funniest character for ages, and his co-stars are perfect in their roles, too. Looking forward to seeing your reaction to the rest of the series that just gets funnier and funnier! 👍😄

I worked in a broadly open plan office where the bookcases, pot plants etc that divided the room into departments were arranged such that the only person that could see the screens of the IT department was me, from my desk in the marketing department (I was the artist). There were four of them, and they were pretty much like Moss and Roy. They would only very begrudgingly help anyone if they even bothered at all, invariably pretending to be too busy. But from my position I could see they spent all day, and I do mean all day, playing Counterstrike and watching Futurama.

"Switching it off and on again" (the _order_ is crucial BTW, that's day 1 of most IT degrees) is _at least_ 80% of the job. A further 10% is just doing what it _actually_ says on screen. And the remainder is what we get paid for :). A real exchange that underlines "The IT Crowd" is bordering on documentary: Boss: "We wondered if you wouldn't mind switching offices ?" Me: "Where to ?" Boss: "Just by the canteen" Me: "...but that's a cupboard ?" Boss: "Well, yes, it's a cupboard _now_ ..." (I did indeed switch - in my time i've had desks in basements, the classic cubical, "former" cupboards and a roof space that I shared with rolls of insulation, sweltering heat in the summer and the occasional mouse. In fairness, i've _also_ had offices, some of them even _with a window_ !?!)

It is not turning the computer "on and off again". That would result in the computer being off, hence unusable for the user. It is turning the computer "off and on again" meaning a reboot. When you get it wrong, you can trust the user to follow your instructions to the letter and get it wrong as well.

Back in the day when I worked Internet Helldesk and desktop support... 1/4 the time I was just listening to a problem... asking a few questions... and essentially giving the person license to do the thing they knew they needed to do to solve their problem on their own. The "computers are hard" meme was strong in society at one point.

I worked in iT during the nineties. A lot of times it is like 1 or 2 minor settings to adjust and turn it off and on again. Or real stupid things like backup floppy disks for important programs are attached with a MAGNET to the computer housing. Really. Or floppies put in drives and "disappear" - No, the user found a gap between 2 drives and has about 8 floppy disks inserteted INTO that gap... Etc etc etc .and there is also the famous "My cup-holder doesn't come out anymore"... They meant the CD ROM player, a d its no fantasy, I had them all come by, worked for about 30 years in iT and the level of stupidity is really amazing..

I used to work IT for a company that built charging stations for electric cars right when the whole system was still brand new. They hadn't worked out the kinks. Half of my calls ended with people screaming at me about it being now my fault that they're stranded in a snowstorm when there was nothing I could do. The other half we could actually get things working, but it was like solving some complex theorem and it was never the same problem twice. This show is how I've learned to laugh about it later.

Sorry but I'm going to have to say this. Because you're not the first American/Canadian who I've heard saying this. So I'm wondering if it's a thing your side of the pond to say "On and Off again"? Because it's "Off and On again." The computer is on, that's how you know there is a problem. So you have to turn it OFF and then turn it ON again to see if the problem is resolved. I'm used to the fact that there are differences in language depending which side of the Atlantic you are on. But I'm just curious if there is a difference or if I just keep hearing people making the same mistakes

Anyone in this field needs to have the basic understanding of programming, electronic and chip basics, all the other is based on the field. Any seroyous tech guy will never want to use IT as it is a dumb simplefication for the people who do not understand also the actual tech field is massive (thousands of different jobs and hundreds of fields under the blanketed IT or Tech field).
