I stopped listening to pop music for the last 20 years or so. I've heard of most of the artists, but don't know most of the songs, except for a few massive hits. But after watching many reaction videos over the last couple of years, this video has confirmed to me, at least, that people have the strongest opinions about the music they grew up with, especially if it was recent. They are more likely to dislike one or more genres of music from that time period, and they seem to be more influenced by their peers, social media, etc., than other music. After watching so many positive reactions to music that I used to dislike, even if I never gave it much of a chance, I realize that because of the memories it evokes at the very least, and being able to see other people enjoy the music for what it is, free of prejudice, others' opinions, and resistance to change, I find I actually like the music I thought I hated, and renew enjoyment of the music I didn't. So thanks to all the reactors who view old music with fresh eyes, so I can too.

This video helped me pinpoint exactly where I became old in terms of keeping up with pop music (I just turned 30 so I’m not “old”, but I’m clearly not keeping up with the times lol) Virtually everything through 2015 was the same as the 00s video where I recognized almost every song and like most of them. Then in 2016 I start being like “I’ve never heard that song in my life” or “is THAT who sings that?” for at least 60% of them.

The music industry exists to make money. So they try to make the most amount of money with the least investment of money. Marketing campaigns are what draw in a crowd and if the talent isn't top notch no one complains because it's about the experience.
@greendragonpublishing
@greendragonpublishing Жыл бұрын
As expected, this old girl only knew about 12 of these - and each of these went viral into memedom or something, like Gangam Style or Somebody I Used to Know, etc. The reason they're all pop - most of these artists and songs are managed by industry experts, and they find a formula and stick with it. Lots of artists in the 1970s, 80s, and even into the 90s, fought against that corporate stricture, but now it's pretty much standard. You can get popular as an unusual artist with a new sound... but you won't reach the top without that corporate 'style' any longer.

The pattern is that the decade right after the one a person got really into music is the one they hate the most. The ones after that are just boring for most people, but don't inspire much emotion one way or the other. But there are some objective criticisms to make about the state of the industry, the low diversity of notes in an average song, etc. My lists get pretty sparse after 2005, and I actually don't believe I have a single song from anyone who debuted after 2012. I think the most recent song I added to a list was something Jack White made 3 years ago.

I liked more of these than I expected to. I can't say actively seek them out to listen to. It is more like I heard them at clubs, liked them, and then for some reason forgot I had heard them. I wonder why. Generally though I agree, music has gotten very stale. The reason for it I heard is that music companies use algorithms to determine which songs will be profitable. Since new sounds get weeded out by the algorithms, nothing new makes it. I still think a deep dive into often obscure music from the '60's and '70's provides the most variety of rock. The 90's may have had more genre popular at once though.

the thing I think is noticeable is not so much the type of music but the themes are very similar. In the previous decades there was a wider diversity of themes and subject matter including sci-fi themed songs, fantasy themed songs, there were also a lot of music which was more politically motivated. There were of cause absolute flops and weird things but everything had a little try. However its fair to say the more interesting music was and is still being made it just isnt up on the surface, to give an example Rodger Waters is still touring and making material, Porcupine tree are still creating as are artists like Sting and radiohead but its not going out into the mass marketplace.

DON'T be stupid like most people who are juat being fucking sheeps shitting on Pop music and then probably listening to them on their own secretly or something. Don't be sanctimonious, it doesn't make you more special JUST because you don't like Pop music. And I don't get it, when it comes to other things, people kind of ALWAYS choose the biggest brands. Like most people when they buy cellphones, they either choose Apple or Samsung. Then I don't get it then why it's not like that when it comes to music. Guess that those people have NO FUCKING IDEA what is art. And when it's popular, then it means that there are quite some people who think that it's good, so they listen to it. I'm a HUGE FAN of early 2010's American Pop music though!!! (EDM Pop/Electro Pop/Synth Pop), and I also like 2000's and early 2010's Pop Rock/Pop Punk/Emo/Radio Rock singles. So... yeah. And I think that early 2010's has THE BEST music of ALL TIME!!! They have THE MOST UPBEAT/EXCITING/MOST TIMES HAPPY PRODUCTION!!! And you feel like they're all the same is because you're NOT a fan of the genre. Like how I feel like most Rock songs sounds the same.

Agreed heard the first time instrumentals were boring but her singing is the worse don't know if it was made to intentionally sound bad but it's bad it's not even so bad it's good but it's just terrible

Lady Gaga is acting now and she made her big move on American horror story with a scene with Angela Bassett. Playing a dark character with problems. She’s mostly stuck to acting for the time being and is going to become Harley Quinn in the next joker movie. She’s actually doing a good job too. Lady Gaga hasn’t released any new music since her acting debut.

She does both, working on music and acting, her last album was in 2020 (Chromatica) and the last song that she released was last year (Hold My Hand)

This video just shows me I missed nothing by focusing on listening to 70s - 90s music during the 2010s, seems I just bypassed a lot of trash. Sia is the only singer on that list I would actually listen to, the rest can all stay on their trash pile.

Wow. I hadn't any idea just how bad 2019 was until looking at this. Out of these, there's only like 2 decent songs and the rest are between meh and complete trash? I thought 2013, 2015, or 2018 was my worst year in music, but... no. It's not even close!
