I’m honestly surprised that you guys were surprised about Christian Borle getting a nom. Almost every single time he’s appeared on Broadway and was eligible for a nom, he’s gotten it, so I knew this was gonna happen. Whether or not I think he deserves to win over everybody else in that category is another discussion entirely though.

I’m so sad Peter Pan Goes Wrong didn’t get any nominations! I feel it deserved something. It is such a technical, hilarious, and immersive play. I hope it still does well despite this :(

I saw "Some Like It Hot," "A Doll's House" and "Camelot" recently and enjoyed all of them. Happy for their nominations. Sad that Adrianna Hicks didn't get nominated. I loved her in both "Hot" and "SIX" when I saw it last year. 👑

The Christmas Carol 3x nominations are on point!! I saw it in 2018 when it premiered at the Geffen Playhouse in LA and I saw I 2x in one day and came back the following weekend because it was so good. I hope it travels to the UK.

Argument in favor for the Best Script of a Play: Best Play entails the quality of the entire production, including its designs and its performers, whereas Best Script would entail the work of the playwright specifically. I believe the playwright ought to be recognized separate from the entire production team.

I completely agree with you, I was worried before nominations that life of pie would get nominated just for the scale of the show. But I am glad that they did not as the script is not the best, it is more the production value.

It doesn't make sense that the Best Play is simply judged by its script while the Best Musical is judged by its overall production value.

I think the reason for that is because musicals are much more collaborative. They include the book, the score, choreographer, and director, whereas a play is basically the director and the author, and I'm not including all the technical elements.

@@graymoreghost That might be a convenient reason for it being the way it is. The thing is, writing a script for a play is often a different kind of job than writing a book for a musical where you have the score and choreography to collaborate with. In short, musicals may involve more collaboration, but plays definitely have a DIFFERENT KIND of collaboration, and that's my whole point. Again, in my head: Best Play = overall production value, Best Playwright = best writing of the script of the play specifically. As it is right now, it is unfortunate the playwright doesn't have exclusive recognition in the appropriate terms.

You know how Best Play is awarded to both the producer and the playwright? There's no reason a Best Ensemble Tony couldn't be awarded to the cast *and* casting director. Although .... I bet Directors would start demanding CD credits too, to help them get more chances -- the same way that composers started receiving Orchestration credits as soon as that award was created. (Yes, yes, also technology has enabled them to take a significantly more active role in their orchestrations, which helps. But Kurt Weill and Leonard Bernstein wrote (or cowrote) their own orchestrations even before the Tonys themselves were created, so it's always been an option. Most Broadway composers just never learned anything about it.)

The very fact that New York, New York was nominated for Best Musical proves how political the Tony awards are. I truly believe the only reason that show was nominated was because of Lin-Manuel Miranda being attached to it. I am absolutely positive Just the fact it was nominated for Best Book of a musical when the majority of the reviews totally ripped apart that script. So, don't tell me it's not political

Fantasia performed on the Tony’s the year after eligibility when she replaced in the Color Purple, so I don’t think Lea performing this year is out of the question! The Tony’s like viewership and will do anything to get it tbh lol

I don’t get the Kimberly Akimbo and Fun Home comparison. My fourth favorite musical vs my absolute last favorite musical. I don’t know if any other show has made me as sadly hopeful as Akimbo. It is truly a masterpiece

Annaleigh Ashford for best actress in a musical and J. Harrison Ghee for best actor in a musical. Some Like It How for best musical and Sweeney Todd (followed closely by Into the Woods) for revival. Choreography for New York, New York possibly although I can't see how the show walked away with so many nominations. I LOVED Parade as well... I saw all of the musicals this year that earned Tony noms with the exception of & Juliet. It will be interesting to see how all plays out... BTW, I LOVE your channel!!!!

I’ve heard from so many people that “& Juliet” may be the best new musical on Broadway right now! Maybe in a while! That and Shucked! I really Want Ben to get it for “Parade” he’s so insanely phenomenal! If Alex doesn’t get it, I’ll be sooooo sad!!!!

@@TheWiseGrif While it may be unfortunate timing, due to the increase in streaming since the 07-08 strike, the Writers Guild deserve the compensation request they are fighting. And we should all stand with them in fighting for what is deserved.

I was shook that Tommy Kail was snubbed for direction - it gives me hope that Parade (which I'm rooting for) can win Revival as I thought Sweeney Todd was most likely before that. Quite sad about Anna Uzele and Alex Joseph Grayson but pretty happy with the Tonys overall. Was hoping for Alli Mauzey too. Glad to see KPOP and Almost Famous given something - didn't get to see KPOP unfortunately but I enjoyed Almost Famous and think it could have done better in another season. Very interesting set of results! I'm just happy this was such a great season overall. :) Definitely the most exciting season for me since 2017.

Some have speculated that it's mainly due to Phantom's closing - If I had a smash hit turned classic on Broadway for 35 years and it was coming to an end, I'd really want to still have something there if at all possible! Also, the audiences and critics differ greatly based on location, so it could be that the team had reason to think it would go over better with a U.S. setting than in London. I highly doubt this was solely one person's decision, there's a whole creative team and the instrumental composer probably wouldn't have the only say.

@@graymoreghost I'm showing the credits as composed by ALW, lyrics by David Zippel, book by Emerald Fennell, produced by Christine Schwarzman and Darren Johnston, executive produced by Wagner Johnson. Now, some of these people are associated with Really Useful Group (owned by ALW), but that doesn't mean that he himself has his hands in every aspect and does their jobs for them.

@@MickeyJoTheatre As a fellow nb person who once had acting aspirations, I absolutely get why. Maybe the fairest way to do this in future is to classify the roles and not the performers? Like “best actor in a male/female/gender-variant role”.

Not necessarily. Sometimes you’ve got a lot of excellent performances in a season and anyone you’re going to nominate is going to be fully deserving of their spot.

A dolls house didn't over perform. It got the noms people expected it to. I'm not even a Jodie Comer Stan and even I know she's still winning. The show is her performance. She's the front runner

I'm not sure what you mean by flop, is it that it didn't get more noms? In a year with a lot of strong plays I can see a one woman show being overlooked. Sales wise it seems to be doing numbers and the acting is getting raves

People care, in fact this channel has gotten a LOT of hits and growth from Bad Cinderella videos. Plus it's had its fair share of drama even as recently as the critics' reviews of the broadway opening. It's just good business to keep talking about it.
