Its not that she doesn't want to pay 300 dollars for the dress - She simply can't. She keeps mentioning that she is a single parent and that is hard on its own. The bride that is supposedly really good friends with her should know all that, especially if they went through thick and thin as the bride says.

As a child of a single parent who was reliant on food stamps for my some of my childhood, I know how it would be. A lot of the time, even with wanting to do something like get a good dress for a wedding, it can be hard for some people to pay even $100 for a dress for a special occasion.

I didn't even have any bridesmaids in my wedding... It was a small affair. I asked my brother to stand with me, my husband's dad and best friend stood with him, and a good friend of mine performed the ceremony. So I was the only one wearing a dress, but what we did was made sure the guys all had white button-down dress shirts, black dress pants and black vests, and I bought ties for them that matched our wedding collors. My brother had to buy his pants and best, but he said he wasn't upset about it at all, since they were all things he could easily wear in the future to other dressy events. I know most people DO spend money to be in other people's wedding... I've bought my bridesmaid dress for another girl's wedding, too. But it didn't sit right with me, personally, to ask people to do that, especially since we didn't want a big affair and decided to have a shotgun wedding.

i think if as a bride you choose a colour and your bridesmaids choose a dress of that colour, it's totally fair to have the bridesmaids pay - they can buy a dress they like and will wear again. or if you buy the dresses with their input and a budget, it makes sense for them to pay. also many give their bridesmaids the option to decline being a bridesmaid, so if they don't want to pay, they don't have to lmao. that being said, if you really want someone as a bridesmaid and they literally cannot afford to buy a dress, imo not paying is incredibly rude (e.g. the single mother in this video who had a tight budget)

Yep! I’m a bridesmaid for my brother and SIL’s wedding, and she was determined to stay on budget since most of us are 19-27 and a lot of us don’t have a ton of money to toss around. She found an affordable boutique where the most expensive dress fitting her criteria was $250. She and her MOH have updated us each time there’s a sale and my brother even offered to chip in as I was between jobs at the time. As a broke college student working retail, I was still able to afford and participate in this part of the wedding. I spent $150 on my dress. My friend’s sister is getting married and she has a similar approach-and she’s way more uptight and picky than my SIL. It really isn’t that hard to accommodate and respect your bridesmaids and their needs.

But I like that the bridesmades can keep on using it but they shouldn't expect a woman who lives in one bedroom appartment with her kids to be able to pay that much for a dress, the awful pressure and guilt she must have felt, specially as it's her best friends wedding. Unfortunately it's the norm here. Some may say "they can decline being a bridesmaid" but that's a lot easier said than done, due to social implications and hurt feelings etc. One should be able to support their friend without breaking the bank out of obligation... Bridesmaids are expected to pay for their own dresses, hair, makeup and accessories most of the time, and foot the bill for the bachelorette party, maybe even throw a Bridal Shower and pay up front costs for a Jack & Jill Party. Not to mention pitching in on doing DIY's for wedding decor and helping to arrange/schedule things for the ceremony if asked. And probably end up giving the couple a wedding gift too. There's travel (and possibly accommodations) for things like dress fittings, and then of course travel and accommodation for the rehearsal and wedding itself. Personally hoping I don't have the "honour" of being in too many wedding parties.

I agree that there's classism involved in the distaste for Southern styles and habits and such. It's easy to write off anyone and anything Southern as uneducated or ignorant and no one really questions why we think those things or how regions became poor and disadvantaged to get that association. As I'm sure you could guess, I'm a Southerner who loves rural life and most things about living here. But I'm also trying hard to keep an open mind to the fact that a lot of things are genuinely just preference and I probably wouldn't like a lot of things this KZfaq's loves :) And that's okay too.

@@kellyriddell5014 As another Southerner, I totally understand that sometimes things boil down to preference rather than mere prejudice. But by and large, people see Southern aesthetics as trashy, or a gimmick or, dare I say, "camp" rather than a part of a real culture. I'm not saying that Luke has to LIKE cowboy boots! Lol. I just think it should be acknowledged to the audience that laughing at a bride for having her bridesmaids wear cowboy boots is NOT a joke... harkening back to Iman on Project Runway: it's a *legitimate look.* And it deserves all the same careful critique and consideration as any other aesthetic from any other culture.

Bridesmaid dresses are expensive. I wish US would adopt the idea of renting bridesmaid dresses (even wedding dresses) vs buying them like a lot of other countries do. 🤔

I HATE when brides say "It's my day..." It's not. It is a day. Everyone else is also experiencing the day, get over yourself. Also, by that ridiculous logic, wouldn't it also be the grooms day? Why do weddings breed such entitlement?

Speaking of “joy” your videos bring me so much joy. You have really taken pains to educate us in fashion terminology without being patronizing and that’s what really sets you apart from other fashion forwards KZfaqrs. I’m so glad I found you!

Currently a bridesmaid in 2 different weddings and I send them these videos and thank them for not making it difficult like this and for considering our budgets (also I appreciate how cute the dresses are that they chose for us). This makes me extra grateful for my friends during this wedding season haha

I paid for my MoH & BM dresses. I didn't realize it was standard to make them pay for it. It felt wrong to make my friends pay for something they were going to wear once that they didn't even get to pick.

In the uk, no way would the bridesmaids be paying for their own dresses.

Former bridal stylist here, just throwing this out for future reference. Most of these dresses come in multiple colors so they are focusing on style and they would order it in the color the bride wants for the wedding! Love your commentary!

You're absolutely right... When I got married, my maid of honor couldn't afford the dress I wanted, so I bought it for her. I wasn't worried about it- having her in my wedding was important to me, so I made it happen. And with 6 people in the bridal party it would be like $20 for people to chip in and make it happen.

I can't imagine picking a dress and then making your bridesmaids pay for it. In my culture we don't have the concept of bridesmaids, but we do buy outfits for all our close relatives who are attending the wedding.

I never understood why other people should pay for a dress YOU want on YOUR wedding? But also, I'm not an Americana and in my surroundings, we don't really use bridesmaids? I only watched these episodes to make fun how horrible those dresses were. Loved this video tho!

I got married in 2017 and I picked a navy blue knee length bridesmaid dress that started at $99. I had them choose the style so they could pay more if they wanted. There is no reason they needed to go over budget.

Aw man. So if I get married 1. Bridesmaid dresses are on the lower priority. 2. All the the bridesmaids have to like it. I'd rather they have something cute to rewear elsewhere. 3. Price points are going to be lower than whatever this is. I can't justify making someone pay over 100 bucks for something that gives me strong late 2000s melrose vibes 😕 Aand 4. I won't EVER force them to pay something they can't or don't agree to. If I really want them to wear something pricier, I'm footing the bill. It seems so disingenuous to tell someone you'd like them to have a larger role in your special day only to tell them but only if they can afford it.

I want you to know that I have never critically looked at the word "cowboy" until you said "cowperson." Because cowboy is a term to describe an aesthetic/persona here in Texas. So when you said "cowperson," I immediately thought of a mutated science experiment of a person who was half cow.

That blue lace dress has a pattern at joanns. The lace and other fabrics and zipper and other notions to make that dress for the woman of that in that size would probably cost about fifty bucks. Most seamstresses would do it for only $100 but you can save even more if you do it yourself.

I paid for my bridesmaid dresses and hair/makeup shoes everything. Its me asking them to celebrate my wedding day - I'm honouring them for being supportive in my life. I don't agree with people asking bridesmaids to pay. Bridesmaids/family and attendees pay for the bridal shower/hen do and bride covers everything else IMO. x
