"Whiskey in the Jar" is an Irish traditional song set in the southern mountains of Ireland, often with specific mention of counties Cork and Kerry. The song, about a highwayman who is betrayed by his wife or lover, is one of the most widely performed traditional Irish songs and has been recorded by numerous artists. the song originated in the 17th century.

If I had to guess, I would say that "mah sherrain damma doo damma die, whack for my daddy-oh" means roughly the same things as "boppa ooh mow mow" or "a shoobie doo woppa doo wah". Approximately. See also A Crimpella. It's possible that I'm wrong: the lyrics for Whiskey in the Jar are old, and in a rural colloquial dialect of English that I'm only very loosely familiar with, so I could be missing some nuance. But that's my best guess. The best thing they've done, IMO, is Mountain King. If you haven't seen that yet, you simply must.

Your reaction to "Whiskey in the jar" with that mix of admiration for their singing and disgust/confusion at the lyrics was the funniest thing I had seen for a long time. Thanks for the laugh 😂

A wack for my daddy-o --- there's whiskey in the jar-o. Translation: There's whiskey in the jar -Pour a shot (a wack) for my daddy-o (don't know if that's my dad or my friend). Probably homemade hooch poured into jars, not store bought booze in branded bottles. The song is from the 16th century.

Also possible, in medieval times ‘jar’ is something like a cup depending on location. Certainly in a bar you would not have actual ‘glasses’ - too expensive and too fragile. But a ceramic ‘jar’ would be very likely. Jar did not describe the same thing we think of now.

I don't think anyone really understands what the chorus to Whiskey in the Jar is about. But it's still easier to figure out than Black Hole Sun 😆
