That really needs a part 2. A shame we'll never get it. This movie was missing about 45 minutes of footage that the studio made Duncan Jones cut for "reasons." The footage allegedly adds a bunch of story and exposition that helps out some of the problematic narratives. Shame we'll never get a director's cut, as Jones is a phenomenal director.

I actually think they may have done better if they had told the story from just the human's point of view, as it may have helped market it to newcomers to the franchise. Then if they had managed to get a sequel, switch it up and swap to the orc's perspective for that - the two halves of the war are separate enough that they could have got away with that, and it may have kept the story a little tighter, while also giving . Regarding lore changes, I don't think that's a major issue, it's not like the lore has really stayed consistent all the way through the franchise's lifespan anyway.

This movie wasn't based on Works of Warcraft. It was actually based on Warcraft: Humans vs Orcs. It was a RTS game that came out in 1994. There were two sequels before it got a spin-off in the fire of World of Warcraft. As for the movie itself, I thought it was good, but they tried to squeeze too much in a short time. I think if it has come out after Game of Thrones, it would have been done as a TV series, a format which I think would have suited it better.

WC (warcraft) 1-3 (like age of empires, starcraft, command and conquer, etc etc etc, a RTS game series), and then WoW (World of Warcraft, a MMO game, I think) came out WC1 was really hard... at least for me anyways... (I think basically WC was ended, because starcraft-broodwar was taking off and also they were working on their diablo games as well, blizzard just abandoned WC, and moved onto their successful newer RTS series of starcraft-broodwar, and instead went with making the MMO world of warcraft, instead of more RTS WC games)

The baby is often referred to by the community as Green Jesus. In the game he's voiced by one of the original Warcraft lore creators and writers so he's considered the "self insert", the superman or "Green Jesus" of the world and he can do no wrong. If you want a glimpse who he grew up to be you can look up "WOW Reckoning", he's the dark haired one. It'll have some spoilers but if they ever did continue the movies that'd be like the 8th one :)

Very underrated movie imo. I love the effects and look of the magic and they even tackled how, in the game, there are cast timers and big spells take a while to actually fully cast so it isn't just 'magic wizard goes kablam with instant fire'. All the little nods WoW easter eggs were such a delight. It doesn't take place on Earth just because there are humans, this is the land of Azeroth. Glad you all checked it out!

The lore is somewhat complex. Medivh became possessed by the Titan Sargaras, who used him to open the portal. Some of this is handled in the Warcraft novel „The Last Guardian“. One of the instances in World of Warcraft let you play certain parts in the history. One of the events has the players defend Medivh while he is opening the portal. You can tell that a lot of detail has been put into the movie. Especially the look of Stormwind and Westfall should be instantly recognizable for any Alliance player. But the Orcs feel oversized in the film. I don‘t think they ever were that much taller than humans in any of the games. The movie isn‘t perfect, but it certainly isn‘t as bad as some make it out to be. It definitely helps to have some background in the lore.

The orcs have always been bigger than humans both in game and lore. The in game size of orcs being only slightly bigger is just for a gameplay perspective. The Tauren were the upper tier of how big they could make character models without it being too big to fill the screen(remember, og wow didn’t start with addons that let us draw back the camera super far until much later)

It looks cool but it's not Warcraft (Lore). Like Garona killing the king because he asked her to? What? 😅 And Gul'dan never infected the Orcs with fel in the first place, that was Mannoroth's blood and most of them drank it willingly at that point. And then even smaller things like Lothar + Garona? Why? Idk at least it's not canon officially.

@@onlyfoes And you’re one of those problem fans that causes us to never get a sequel because it’s “not entirely lore accurate” It’s not supposed to be, it’s an *adaption* of the story. You need to watch it with that perspective. It’s not going to fully and wholly relate to the game lore because it’s its own canon. In the same vain that the MCU is its own canon in comparisons to comic book lore.

Amazing reaction from the four of you I greatly appreciate it, and also The reason we don’t have a sequel to _Warcraft_ aside from being panned by critics and audiences was due to it’s performance at the Box Office after grossing approx $440 million and failed to reach its break-even point of $450-500 million after global marketing and distribution, even the director Duncan Jones is unsure about a sequel. But recently in September of 2020, Legendary is developing a new _Warcraft_ movie, though it's unknown if it is planned as a reboot or a sequel to Jones' film.

So glad to see one of my favorite reaction channels give this movie a chance. I myself have played all the Warcraft games and I think the story telling is amazing (I have not played World of Warcraft much after Wrath of the Lich King though). I was so excited when they made this movie and I think it is such a shame that it did not do well enough for a sequel. I have seen some people react to or play through Warcraft (and Starcraft) games to experience the story and they have enjoyed it . I can imagine not wanting to put the time and/or effort into playing a videogame just for the story, but there are some well edited videos out there that you can just watch. I would recommend the ones that also show in game dialogue, since if you only watch the cinematics you will not know what is going on. Sorry for going off topic a bit there and thanks again for watching this one!

Somebody probably already said all this, but Just in case: This movie tells the story of WarCraft 1, wich is cronologically 30 years before World of WarCraft starts. The movie follows a different timeline then the games. The games happen in the prime timeline, so a few things are different from the regular Canon. In the canon Gatona is half orc half draenei (another Race from the orcs Planet, we Saw then being sacrificed af the begining of the movie). But in the movie its implied that she is Medivhs daughter. Medivh was the last Guardian of Tirisfal, whos pupose was to defend Azeroth from demons. His mother was the previous Guardian, and she defeated Sargeras, the most powerful demon. But Sargeras Soul scaped into her, and later to Medivh. So he had a inside him from birth, just waiting. Durotan son is Thrall, the leader of the orcs in WarCraft III and WoW up to the events of Cataclysm. It was planned to be a Trilogy. Each movie telling the events of one of the WarCraft games that preceed WoW. And the movie took a decade to be made If you consider from the actual first draft, wich was verry different.

The events of Warcraft happened roughly around 35 before the events of the World of Warcraft game. Thrall is infant Orc you see in this movie . Thrall is the Chief of Orgrimmar in the game World of Warcraft. The movie was pretty good despite some stuff seemed rushed and cut out. It would of been nice to see more movies of this to at least up to the events of World of Warcraft but sadly from what I recall it won't be happening. They did a good job with the effects, it's a solid fantasy movie, but thanks to Arcane and anime going mainstream, I think it's been proven that animation is the way to go when adapting games, especially if you don't want CGI clashing with live action.

Pleasantly surprised to see you folks reacting to this movie...while it's understandable that they (Blizzard) wanted to start from the beginning (this was based on the first Warcraft game, not WoW), it's unfortunate that they decided to go for the First War as their setting and storyline. There's still some of us holding out a very faint hope that Blizzard will decide to do another movie, this time based around a more popular story of Warcraft's lore, the story of Arthas Menethil...it's super-unlikely to ever happen considering how this movie did financially, but we can dream.

So yeah World of Warcraft was an MMO actually based off Warcraft. Warcraft 1 and 2 came out before WoW. And this movie technically follows Warcraft 1's storyline but has pieces of Warcraft 2 and WoW in it as well. Warcraft games are old so don't worry about not knowing them, since Wow's popularity eclipsed the older games

I wasn't aware that a Warcraft movie was ever made. Of course, I wasn't exactly paying attention or looking out for such a thing though. Played a little bit of Warcraft 2 (and maybe went back and checked out the original Warcraft once or twice as well after that) back in the day and found it mildly interesting. (Same for Starcraft, to go on a slight tangent. They were both kinda neat for a bit.) I never cared to look into World of Warcraft though. Haven't paid any attention to the franchise since then.

as an avid Warcraft fan and someone who played it since the first Warcraft in the mid 90s (which actually has a lot of the exposition of this early lore, and Duratan etc.) and I played up through Warecraft 2 and Warcraft 3 LONG before WoW came out (played that too) I really feel the direction of this movie, and the choices they made about what they included vs. what they didn't include were very much driven by giving something back to fans of the game as opposed to trying to make a complete product that an outsider could just start watching and fully catch up on the exposition and lore

It's called Warcraft, because that was the original series: Warcraft 1, 2, and 3. And then they came out with World of Warcraft as basically an MMO Epilogue. It's the ORIGINAL GTA5. And this is DEFINITELY one of the movies from it's time that SHOULD'VE gotten a sequel, but didn't. Mostly cause it's Owning Company now makes some bad money decisions, despite what obvious signs are in front of said decisions....

I feel like this film really needed a commitment to sequels and it definitely didnt need to have so much content cut. As someone who knew Warcraft lore it did feel kinda rushed and crammed in how it was moving through a lot of things, I think that probably reflected in how non-Warcraft fans saw the film.

As a WoW MMO original vanilla player, not too deep into the post MMO lore In really enjoined this movie. It gave me the feeling that I had when I first started the game the sense of magic, the sense of dread (PvP server so death was always around the corner), battle grounds, raids, PvP, developing your skills, always something to do guild friends from all over the world. Good times! And indeed the action is really good. They really did a good job showing the pro's and cons of being a orc vs being human. And the magic was also well done, powerful but like in the game it takes time so you have to compensate for that.

the changing of the name is very telling that sadly we will never get a follow up as it was called "Warcraft: The Beginning" when it was first released but due to not being very well received by mainly fans and not making as much cash as they wanted they scrapped the follow ups, which from what they setup in this film would have most likely been based on the almost forgotten point and click Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans game which followed the journey of young Thrall aka the orc baby, growing up in an human ran prison camp for orcs till he rallies his people after his shamanic powers awaken.

Probably already mentioned in the comments, but its called warcraft beacuse its based off the first RTS game Warcraft Orcs and Humans, much of the start is accurate to the game/lore, but they twisted the end for the movie. The Green orks are supposed to have drunken demon blood and been bound to the demon's will and are invading for this reason. The story of the Guardian is really a tragic thing. Anyone who has played Warcraft 3 should recognize the child though as Thrall

It's kind of funny you mention the idea that "if you don't know anything about Warcraft, you'll be lost", because seemingly most fans of the IP would tell you it's the other way 'round: the less you know about Warcraft going into this movie, the better. The movie did poorly at the box office (only made 29.6% of it's budget back domestically), so it definitely isn't going to get a sequel any time soon. Maybe a remake, but it was already a movie that it took forever to get made (along with some choice digs at Uwe Boll), so I wouldn't expect it. Fans of the franchise _really_ didn't like how it handled the lore, which also works against it in terms of Blizz thinking they might do another. That said it's not nearly as bad as it could have been, and even as a fan I found it pretty watchable. It's definitely waaay better than say, _Assassin's Creed_ which buggered it's own lore pretty badly too (but made a more even split at the box office, making back 43.7% of it's budget domestically, though it performed worse overall). If anything, instead of movies, video game IP owners looking to branch out into less-interactive stories need to be looking more at television, as clearly proven by the drastically superior offerings we've had there recently (in terms of video game adaptations). _Arcane, Edgerunners, Castlevania,_ even _DotA_ have all turned out very good to fantastic adaptations on the small screen, where the longer total run time allows a lot more room for characters and settings to be presented and developed. Great reaction though, looking forwards to your next one.

I never understood why Blizzard didn't just do a fully CG Warcraft movie themselves, especially when they were at their peak. Their cinematics have always been gorgeous and extremely well directed. I'm still not sure the lore would have been accurate though. They were bringing Gul'Dan back as one of the main big bads in the game around the time of release and putting more direct focus on him in this movie just seems like suspicious timing.
@dunerat42
@dunerat42 8 ай бұрын
@@CandleLight129 You're not wrong about the timing, but I haven't checked up on that, so I couldn't tell you for sure. And you're doubly-right about most of their cinematics, though lore questions will always be tainted by the Activision take-over and the subsequent changes made by that debacle.

It's called 'Warcraft' instead of 'World of Warcraft' because the story quite literally takes place during the original RTS games called 'Warcraft', not during the events of WORLD of Warcraft. Green Orcs are Orcs who were infused with the Fel. It just changes the color of their skin. Long ago in the lore (But well after this movie, when Thrall the baby, is an adult) they killed the source of the Fel in the Orcs. A Demon whose blood Gul'dan used to give Orcs with Fel power. In killing the demon, that power burned out, but their skin was still green.) Mind you, that was just the source of Fel in Orcs. It wasn't THE source of Fel. That'd be the guy who took over the Golem at the end of the movie, he is THE bad guy. Or... was. Also Garona is half-orc, half-Draenei (The blue people from the start of the movie who were all in cages, and killed to open the portal). Her mother was a Draenei, her father was an Orc Warrior. Gul'dan forced Orc warriors to breed with Draenei 'as an experiment' and the result was half orcs like Garona. Warcraft lore used to be a lot darker than it is these days. There are also a few lore differences between the movie and actual lore. Like in original lore, Garona was 'bound' to Gul'dan which meant she had to do everything he said, she was effectively mind controlled at all times. When she went with the humans to fight, getting close to him meant she was under his control again, and he made her kill the King. I think a big reason people didn't like this movie, was because it didn't explain a lot of things very well, and while the Orcs coming to Azeroth was a big event in lore, it wasn't what the players wanted to see. People really wanted to see the story of Arthas, or Illidan not the story of Orcs. I get what they were doing, they were starting with something that better sets up the world. But it wasn't as interesting as it could be, and they took a big risk with it, and now we're unlikely to get another movie. So we got the world building movie, but we probably won't get the actual interesting stories it sets up. Like how the undead Plague that swept over the world was in fact, originally a curse of the Burning Legion... the ones who use Fel. It all ties in.

I just wish instead of a live action movie, they had given this to their own animation dept and made a series, that way they could play about with the order a bit and tell stories as they become relevant which then link together to fill in the bigger picture rather than trying to tell it all in one linear narrative with the time constraints of a movie. I was really hoping the number and quality of cinematics during Battle For Azeroth were a hint that they were gearing up to do something like that, but we haven't had anything like that since.
