Okay now for the encouragement! This one is short and sweet! It’s about working on stuff. Tori and I have both noticed ourselves becoming increasing frustrated when things don’t work out. We have this expectation that things should be a certain way and if they aren’t then we are let down. I can write an entire book on that alone haha but back to my point. We were living in a mindset that things needed to be a certain way and if they aren’t then something went wrong versus the mindset we should have had which is we are on a journey and God is constantly at work on us, through us and for us! Because that work is being done, why are we acting like we are finished products that know everything… we don’t. So let’s cultivate a mindset of being works in progress, not getting frustrated when things don’t work out the way we had wanted, and trying to see things from God’s POV versus try to force God to see things from our POV.
Anyways, Love y’all!

@@ToriAndChad I’m SO excited for intimacy and I realize I’ve been looking at counterfeits but I always know what I really want is that safe intimacy in marriage. I think it’s scary though because so many people are very doomsday about “well that’ll only last for a bit” or “they’ll just cheat on you.” I want to trust God fully with it but the waiting is hard!

@@kaylinworthington Honestly I don't think someone who is truly a follower of God and approved by God that you marry would cheat. The problem is in the Christian community most of the people believe in Jesus but don't truly know him so they're not even saved.

I think fighting and arguments is so normalised in relationships that it's "weird" or "off" or even that something is "wrong" if you don't fight. There can be healthy relationships where you communicate, talk to each other about how you feel and your perspective about something than "fighting". Learning how to regulate your emotions, taking care of yourself and how to express your needs and expectations is something both parties have to learn individually before and as a couple. I think acknowledging/talking about your flaws openly and exploring each others love languages and insecurities helps a lot to understand someone's triggers and to limit/avoid big blow outs. P.S love all these videos that share insight into taboo/not talked about topics! We need to hear more of it so more of us don't get awkward/avoid these very important and needed conversations!

Thank you for being so open! It is really helpful to put things in perspective. Due to my upbringing unfortunately I had quite a few mindsets about marriage that haven’t been the most positive. Your videos help me to think and to look at those mindsets - and to open up about other ways/possibility. And you both have such a refreshing way about how you answer the questions. So it’s with more „lightness“ and still serious.

Just read the description and it hit hard. I like things to go my own way and I don't like taking criticism. It can get me very frustrated at times. It was encouraging to be reminded that I'm not a finished work of art, the master is still working on me. And I need to be more gracious when others try and come along to help. Especially when it's my family, boyfriend, or close friends.

Completely agree about not venting about each other to friends & family, even before marriage. My bf and I struggled to to understand one another at the start of our relationship. I vented to my sister about some things and it really tainted her impression of him for a while. Same with one of my friends, although she was able to move past it sooner. Now my bf and I have been dating over 2 years with plans to get married and have established that we don’t bring each other’s garbage out for others to see. We talk through it ourselves and/or I work through it with my counselor.

On the topic of venting to family, in our marriage counseling our pastor said something that I LOVED, he said "Create a healthy relationship with your in-laws (which is a good idea anyway) and when there is a misunderstanding or issue, you can talk it out with your spouses parents because they will always love their child, and it is their goal to see them succeed and they will be able to help you understand them better and give you someone to talk to that can help resolve the issue without tainting the view of the spouse"

So helpful! I think the biggest assumption for me is the independence one and the finances. I've been single all my life and like being single most days lol. But sometimes the thought of marriage has me thinking that I'll lose the freedom I have now. So how you handled that assumption was helpful to hear. On the finances piece (a.k.a sharing a bank account) I always think about the worst. Like what if he got abusive or something and now I can't access money to escape or whatever? Lol I know that's crazy but sometimes I think that and it's scary.

I really like your response to the venting to family. I like to say if it leaks out it doesn't get to the problem or the solution. Our side family/friends are not in the intimacy of a marriage. Imagine if we vented all the time to friends/family about God not doing something for us or we had disappointment w/ God. How would God feel? He wants a relationship w/ just us not our family/friends at the same time.

Super fun video as always, guys! 😊 Just a quick personal opinion on the joint/separate account thing :) I respect everyone's opinion and I know every couple is different, so I'm not trying to "promote" the way we do it haha, if I would promote anything, it would be to discuss it with your spouse openly and honestly, and choose the method that works the best for specifically you two :) For us, interestingly, it was the separate accounts that helped us communicate honestly and effectively about money and finances, and it really brought us closer. We learned how to cooperate with the common spendings (rent, groceries, holidays etc), we are talking about how much do we earn and spend, we have a little budget planning journal, so we really handle the finances hand in hand, except for that little personal freedom about how we spend our separate money. Obviously we discuss the big spendings so it's not like one day I'm just coming home with a TV I bought lol, but I can buy all the books I want or I can get my nails done with my own money, and my spouse can buy all his PC games and other electronic gadgets that I personally would never want to spend money on, but since he's still able to pay our common expenses and he has extra/savings, he's free to get anything he pleases with his own money :)

I have a slightly different opinion when it comes to venting. It can be super lonely to not be able to talk about what is going on in your life, and counselors aren’t in the role of a friend. I think if you can find ppl who are as forgiving and graceful and mature as they are wise then that can be good as long as it is honoring of your spouse and not instead of talking with your spouse first 🙃🌺❤️
@ToriAndChad
@ToriAndChad Жыл бұрын
Totally see your point! I think it comes down to the definition of "vent". Because if it is an expression of our spouse in anger or rage, then that isn't a good look. I mean I would be so hurt to hear if Tori were talking badly about me behind my back instead of communicating with me to resolve. But if she was working through an issue with friends in a healthy way then I love that! If you simply are going to talk to friends about stuff to get advice, prayer and support then there is nothing wrong with that and we love that! I go to my guy friends all the time for advice on how to handle things. I guess venting and going to friends/family for support are two different things. From our POV when you vent you are angrily expressing frustration about someone that can lead to gossip and that is what we are trying to avoid here. But like we said in the video, if you can do it in a way that is honoring to your marriage, your spouse and to God then that is an amazing thing to do! Hope that helps clear up what we were trying to say!

Hey Chad, this question is for you: Did you had mentors in the beginning of your relationship that spoke gossip about your now wife? And intended to pop your bubble and ruin your honey moon stage with your newly girlfriend?

Married people: what caught you off guard after getting married? I bet marriage really is as great as it seems but what did you wish you knew before getting married so you weren't surprised?

I’ve realized as a young married woman that sex is really not talked about within Christianity. I do understand why not, but it feels like it promotes shame even within a marriage because especially when you’re young people make honeymoon jokes and it can just make it feel icky

@Chad.. You say you gain so much more than just loosing independence.. But what so you gain then? Cuz everyone seems to talk about its worth it but not a lot of ppl talk about why its worth it or what you gain..

Like what if one of the partners is really good at making money and the other partner is not so gifted at naturally making money? What if the monetarily "well off" partner sees money as independent from partnership and sees the partner who is not so gifted at making money as lazy or using them for money? How can a "poor" person find love? Or how do see that kind of situation?

Jenna, just thought I’d say something even though I’m not tori or chad 😆…. That’s not a healthy partner to be with I think. Because why would you be with someone who clearly makes you feel “less than” because they make more money? We can’t all make the same amount because different circumstances and capabilities. A “poor” person can indeed find love, there are plenty of people out there who have a healthy mindset financially and are looking for someone for not only how much money they make.
