There are so many moving parts involved when creating a powerful performance like this. Here are some insights from an acting and performance coach: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h95ia8qH19_IoJ8.html

Only Lady Gaga would have the courage to start a song acapella at the Oscars. And NAIL IT!

Side note: have you ever noticed how any project/collab Lady Gaga steps into immediately becomes far greater than the sum of its parts? Call it what you will - I dunno, the "Gaga Effect?" - but she always seems to bring out the best in other performers, no matter how grand they may already be.

agree, for example, i didn't like moth into flame that much, but when she performed it with metallica she took it to the next level, i love the harmonizations, melodies, screams and overall harshness she added to the song, i wish there was an official studio version with her.

For a long time, I wasn't a big Lady Gaga fan. I could handle her music, but it wasn't at the top of my playlist. I guess the theatrics really didn't grab my attention like it did so many. Not saying it was bad or good, just not really my thing. But when this song came out, I immediately thought, wow, give this woman just a piano and a microphone and turn her loose. She really is an amazing artist and has one hell of a voice! When I listen to 'Hold My Hand' and then 'Bad Romance', it still is hard for me to grasp this is the same person.

Great analysis. I would love to see you react to more of her. Good performances include Bang Bang, New York, La Vie En Rose, Edge of Glory (for her Christmas special), or even the music video for ‘I’ll never love again’.

I agree with your analysis,I have always liked her songs and vocals that are outside of her stage show style.Tony Bennet duet comes to mind, showing how truly talented she really is,maybe she is just maturing as a performer but I love her stuff.Thank you for teaching about muscles I never heard about before and you don't even charge tuition!

I dig it, I’m curious how you feel when you hear artist clearly lip singing, or singing to heavy tracks, seems to happen a lot more and more, I can appreciate when someone actually sings and sounds off, or having a bad day, vs covering it up with tracks….

Love, love your analysis, so spot on!! I didn't get into the "Lady" until she hooked up with Tony Bennett, it was then I realized her all around talent and character, so happy she did, because I'm not sure if I would have!! She will now always be one of my favorites!! Looking forward to more great stuff!! Thanks so much for this video, look forward to seeing many more!! By the way, will you ever analyze your singing for us to see!!??

I learned a long time ago that acting and singing are very related. I read all the way back in 1999 in an interview with a newspaper with jewel, what she was doing her first acting role in a TV movie, that she said that she takes her script, and she sings her lines 1st, before reciting them in a spoken way, it in order to get into the emotions of the lines. I’ve also heard that Celine Dion has been acting out her songs on stage, which you can see, for years because she was for bidden to get into acting too soon in her career. But she’s a good actress who has done a couple of roles , and now has done her big first feature film, which is coming out in May.

I love listening to you break down and explain vocal performances, it fascinates me. I was wondering if Lady Gaga could really sing, actually, and wasn't just a cult of personality, so it's nice to hear your assessment. For some reason she never really appealed to me, maybe it's my age, I don't know. But I know I like a lot of what she stands for and supports, so maybe I should take another listen to some of her stuff, thanks for opening my mind to that. I wish times were better for me right now and I could hire you to help me learn to sing better, I've always loved singing, my voice is decent enough and I can carry a tune. But I know nothing, really, just imitating what I've heard all these years. So yeah, your stuff is fascinating and that person who said thanks and you don't even charge tuition was right. Just out of curiosity, for future reference, do you do lessons over video chat or anything?

I was skeptical myself but I saw an interview and she's one sharp lady and down to earth too...and the more you watch her play piano and sing especially in live events...well she hooked me....she's talented. Hey, Tony Bennett can't be wrong....lol!!!

Glad you decided to do this one. It wasn't my absolute favorite of the evening (which was better overall than I expected it to be - lots of cool stuff happened), but it was still plenty amazing. How can one possibly fault her? Totally agree with you about her authenticity and commitment. Those two factors alone make her such a powerful communicator of emotions and ideas. And then there's the voice itself, which is at once raw and refined. She has all of the ability - all of the headroom - in the world and isn't afraid to push that ability to the edge. Reminds me of how certain jazz instrumentalists play it safe while others play right on the ragged edge. Miles did that. So does Gaga. Great stuff.

You picked a bad time to stop the video at 3:20! LMAO. I wanted to say that that you, or should I say, I noticed at 2:11 that you hadn’t spoken the whole time, and since the video started. You were really so into it! Me too, because this is actually my first time watching the performance.

Because of her penchant for outlandish and, in my opinion, freakish costuming, I'd never given credence to the voice of Lady Gaga. Her image had always overshadowed it and me off but the performance that allowed me to be able to strip away the madness and listen only to the sound of her voice and the range she possesses is from the 2015 Oscar broadcast as she honored Julie Andrews by singing a medley of songs from "The Sound of Music." I'd love to hear your opinion and analysis....in fact, I'd love to hear what you think of Ms. Andrews voice! It's such a pity that incredible voice was taken from her...but we still have "My Fair Lady, "The Sound of Music" and "Victor/Victoria" to remember plus the many moments she so delightfully shared with us through various mediums.

Have you listened to any M83 yet? I’d absolutely love to hear your opinions and reaction to the song “Oblivion” featuring Susanne Sundfor. She has an amazing voice, and the song (electronic genre) is what would seem at first to be a slightly odd pairing for her yet it works amazingly well. Apologies if you have already covered this, but I couldn’t find a video. I loved your reactions to the live Tool Sober video. Tool is one of my favorite bands. I had a very similar reaction to them when I first heard them in the mid 90s.

This song kinda sounds like "Tuesday's Gone" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. I guess it's the lamenting lyrics, that same wailing style of singing, similar sounding beat, and the piano in the background. She sang it well.

exactly, that's a more accurate way to describe it i think, people who has been following her for years know her talent and what she's capable of, even when she debuted with the Fame, she doesn't get recognized is usually by people who know her from the most superficial stuff and were shock when they see her singing her pipes off.

I love Lady Gaga but as a singer myself her pitchiness has always irritated me 😢 and I find this performance to be no exception. I'm not sure you touched much on that but it's one of the areas I think she can improve upon. And if this was a first time listen of this particular song it would be more difficult to catch the melody due to said issue. Thoughts?
