What he did to Daughter of Mine was the most reality bending horror I can imagine. Being trapped just out of sight in every mirror is ridiculously bizarre. And a creepy little girl with Pennywise’s balloon 🎈 doesn’t help! Imagine seeing her out the corner of your eye?

This two-part story was based on a book of the same name by Paul Cornell (who, incidentally, wrote the script for the TV version too), it's overall the same but has a few differences, like there being more members of the Family of Blood, more characters in the school playing a part of the story, and a particular detail with Tim Latimer (the boy who found the watch). At the end of the story, WW1 begins, and one of the school characters goes off to fight in it, ending up getting badly injured. He's the only one of his squad who survives, and he's unable to get himself to safety, he thinks he's left for dead... until he seems someone. Tim Latimer, who didn't join the army... he joined the Red Cross instead, and helps him not only escape but survive the war entirely. In short: Tim, inspired by what happened in the story, became a 'doctor'.

I loved Tennants performance in this one. His acting as John Smith was so completely different to the Doctor that even though they are both played by the same actor, we still miss The Doctor when Tennant is on screen! I also love the line 'falling in love didn't occur to him?' - I always assumed the Doctor was still so heartbroken over Rose, there was no way falling in love with anyone else would even be on his mind!

I mean it's normal, just like humans, that the thought to fall in love again isn't something you think about after such a short time, but sometimes it happens. The Doctor isn't immune to falling in love with other people. They've lived for such a long time and they've already fallen in love with several people. Rose wasn't the first and won't be the last. From what we've seen, the Doctor is pretty polyamorous :) I like that. Although my interpretation of that line was that it's not that the Doctor couldn't think of falling in love with someone else, but that he doesn't allow himself to in general (but still failing), and so this was just another thing he was gonna do, and not have anything else like falling in love come in between the important task, so I believe that's why it didn't occur to him that that could happen.

"We wanted to live forever, so the Doctor made sure that we did." Genuinely terrifying. We all love the Doctor, but he went BATSHIT on them. It's just a little glimpse of what he could become if he ever abandons his rules. A vengeful god, basically.

My interpretation of the Doctor inviting Joan to travel with him is that he thought he was being kind, giving her the opportunity to spend time with someone who would keep reminding her of John Smith. And the flip side of that is he's an alien, who despite his fondness for humans and all the time he's spent with them, doesn't really understand them as thoroughly as might be expected.
@Ockerlord

well, the last time he drastically changed was when he was with Rose, and she was devastated he couldn't change back to 9 anymore. But she stayed. Joan couldn't. That is also fine.

@andrewgwilliam4831, that is very interesting. It bothered me that he asked her that and kind of acted as if it would be just the two of them (which it probably would have been because Martha wouldn't have stayed with him) and he was just willing to shove Martha aside. But perhaps he did think they could both go with him and there wouldn't be a problem. This was a well-done set of episodes, but I wanted to see him fall for Martha if anyone when he was freed from his recent loss (even with the class and race differences, this can happen). So I wasn't too pleased with his (or his constructed persona's) falling for Miss Redfern. The other life flashing before his eyes was interesting, though.

BAINES: He never raised his voice. That was the worst thing. The fury of the Time Lord. And then we discovered why. Why this Doctor, who had fought with gods and demons, why he'd run away from us and hidden. He was being kind. He wrapped my father in unbreakable chains, forged in the heart of a dwarf star. He tricked my mother into the event horizon of a collapsing galaxy to be imprisoned there forever. He still visits my little sister once a year every year. I wonder if one day he might forgive her, but there she is. Can you see? He trapped her inside a mirror, every mirror. If ever you look at your reflection and see something move behind you, just for a second, that's her. That's always her. As for me, I was suspended in time. And the Doctor put me to work standing over the fields of England, as their protector. We wanted to live forever, so the Doctor made sure that we did. Always sends chills down my spine. Great reaction,so looking forward to the next one. 👍

This was my very first episode of Doctor Who, casually watched across a room while my roommate watched the show. The imagination of the writing and the boldness to embrace the gray areas of the characters blew me away. I almost never saw American shows willing to be that dangerous. I told my roommate that if the episodes were always like this, then I was in! Still one of my very favorite storylines from the whole show.

This two parter is one of my favourites, hands down. It feels like a deep dive into the Doctor's character, seeing the parts of himself he usually keeps hidden away. But John Smith is a part of him, always will be. And the line about falling in love. He never thought of the possibility? UGH SO GOOD. But it shines a light on what makes the doctor the doctor, different from everyone else. And the ending when the doctor comes back with such COLD fury. "He's like fire and ice." It just felt like another peek into the darkness ten holds inside him and I loved it so much

You said in this video that the 9th doctor is PTSD and the 10th is rage, which made me think of something further that this. The 9th was behaving like he was in denial. The 10th is certainly rage, as detailed in this double episode. The 11th is bargaining, trying to hold on to his whimsy and youth. The 12th is self loathing,. The 13th is acceptance. The doctor is grieving the loss of his people, and through the series we see him go through each stage of the process. This is a fresh though at 4am while I can't sleep and hasn't been thought through clearly so I might just be reaching or imagining it. Maybe it's just a nice concept but wasn't actually happened... or maybe I am right... I dunno right now, gonna have to think about it furth- and I just spotted that the next episode is blink, I guess I can stay up for another 30 minutes XD

@@robertwareham8466 Hi Britany. If you remember, I first found your channel on the first Matt Smith episode, put a comment on The Beast Below. Then when it came time for the return of River Song, I thought I should see your reaction to Silence In the Library first. And then I thought, oh why not, and went back to this two parter. I have to say, I'm amazed you don't like them. To me this is Doctor Who firing on all cylinders, fantastic storytelling, infinitely rewatchable, stories with heart and soul and wonder. I had Season 3 on DVD and these two plus Blink were on one disc, and I always thought, forget your Kubricks, your Hitchcocks, your Coppolas, this is the very best single DVD I own. But as Robert Wareham says, everyone is different. I must get used to this new world, like a lonely traveller on a distant planet where grass is blue and the sky is yellow. I do enjoy watching your reactions though, you ask good questions about story logic that the show skims over (because there's no real answer). Anyway, on to Blink. Everyone loves Blink! 🤞

This is one of the most loved two parters, always in like top 10 lists and stuff and while I do like it a lot, I like it less than others seem to. I think mainly it is too long and I thinkg Human Nature (Part 1) is kinda too slow and all the good bits happen in this part. I understand it is necessary to build up the relationship between the Doctor and the Nurse but it doesn't change how I feel. Although saying that, this part is really good and I love the interactions between the characters and John Smith not wanting to change back into the Doctor. A little bit of trivia, this episode was adapted from a book that Russell T.Davies (showrunner) wrote during the time that Doctor Who was cancelled (1989 - 2005) where it was the 7th Doctor instead. It was so popular he made it into an episode when he brought the series back.

It's my theory that Latimer wasn't supposed to sign up for the army. If The Doctor hadn't been at the school at that time, he would have flunked and not been accepted, because of how everyone describes his ineptitude with weapons and his cowardly attitude. And in all other visions, we see him there, when we know he really wasn't there, so why would the vision of the artillery shell be any different? So my theory is that it's because he saw the vision of his classmate dying that he signed up, and made sure to keep the classmate alive. A vision he only got because he had the watch, that was only there because of The Doctor.

This is why I don't want you to drop the series wrap-up videos. (Probably too late, since you're so far ahead on Patreon). Because with episodes this big, with so much being thrown at you, it's not something that can be processed immediately after viewing. You were saying yourself "I hope I remember all these thing I want to say". So do I! Now I'm thinking about all the moments you didn't comment on, wondering if you meant to do so, but forgot. And even the things you remembered, you might have something that changes your mind or something to add after you've thought back on the episode later. Or, seen what these moments lead to later in the series. Well, glad you enjoyed these episodes, at any rate. They are generally considered to be two of the best.

I was disappointed Joan turned down The Doctor's invitation to travel with him in the TARDIS because i think having a companion from a different time instead of the modern day which would had been great and it would had been interesting to see her reaction to world events of today and seeing her reaction to the monsters and the Daleks all that would had been so alien to her despite her outdated view of Martha we do need to keep in mind she's from a different time. The Doctor passing himself off as a human it's great as a one-off experiment but it's not really something i hope they repeat again because the interesting thing about the Doctor is he's not human and does or should not value to the same customs as a human the Doctor falling in love is not really in his system. I don't know if you are familiar with the story "Pocahontas" or not but i believe there's also a character called John Smith in that.
