Hannes (drummer) once said when Sabaton was traveling with Nightwish, he saw this woman with a whiskey in one hand and a cigar in the other hand, and knew immediately this woman he will marry. Her name is Floor Jansen and she sings the endcredit scene here. What you told at the end of the song about your time, your experience and your attitude I think is very important and it should take everyone time to listen to it. You have my respect for your view of things. Away from one-dimensional thinking, which seems to be gaining the upper hand these days, because that's the easiest and most convenient.

Sabaton began writing this song in 2014. It took this long for them to "get it right", something they pride themselves with. They don't pick sides, they just try to tell the truth of the story. The guitar during the middle breakdown of the battle scene gives me chills. I can hear the wailing and the anguish of war. The outro, sung by Sabaton drummers' wife, Floor Jansen of Nightwish, is the soothing part of the song. It allowed me to "calm my soul". Does that make sense? I believe this is a song that we will listen to all year around. I want to be at a Sabaton concert in a sold out stadium singing with the crowd "We were all Friends!"

Its Tommy who plays in Majestica. He's an amazing talent.. Sabaton was lucky to get him. and the ending credits was sung by Floor.. Not sure if you caught that. But all their video's are like mini movies. Bismark comes to mind. As for my past military service I was raised the same way. I still feel weird when people find out and say thank you for your service. I don't know how to respond to that still, other than just a simple Thank you. But, times have changed I guess. I was raised by a grandpa and his brothers that had to be split up during WW2 because of the Sullivans. They were originally all on the same battleship in the Pacific. My great Uncle (from my grandma's side) was a medic in Europe in WW2. All my uncles but one served in Vietnam.. The one that didn't was much younger and served in the Persian Gulf. I too, served in the Persian Gulf.. It's just what we did, what a lot of families did, no one asked for a thank you or felt owed anything, quite the opposite actually. And I hope you check out more Sabaton. They really tell great stories of history that so many are trying to forget or don't even know about anymore.

In truth, the real "enemy" are those who sent us off to fight in the first place. We personally have no quarrel with who we're fighting against.

When someone tells me thank You for your service, I feel uncomfortable with that and never know how to respond to it. I usually just nod or say thank you and try to get away from them as fast as possible. I'm a Navy vet, and served in Desert Storm, but we were in the Red Sea, far away from the front lines. My ship shot some Tomahawks, and we watched the carrier launch air strikes, but I always felt I didn't really do anything. It's the ones who were injured in combat, the ones who came home in a box, and the ones that never came home at all that they should be thanking. People like my Mom's cousin 'Bud' who was killed on Iwo Jima. So I understand exactly what you were saying and I agree with you completely. This song is on their newest album (The War to End All Wars) which is due to be released in March. It is the sequel to the 2019 record (The Great War). Both albums focus on WWI. The newest music video is for the song 'Soldier of Heaven' and is about the White Friday avalanches on the Italian front in Dec 1916.

Please don't apologise for your emotions and the personal stories you tell!! You're human and an empath and you've experienced things a lot of us never have. As you are open about your experiences people will open up to you! And you are so right...war is made for the greater good of only a few who didn't and (still) don't give a sh... about the concequences for others. I'm a bit pessimistic because I think there always will be persons like that, unfortunately. And that is the reason why I like Sabaton so much. They care a lot and put that great care in telling all the stories and give credit where it is due. Do you know that It is possible for everyone who knows a war story, be it a forgotten or not widely known battle or persons who played a (significant) role in it, to send and email about it to Sabaton? Thank you for your service, Eric. Were you in Desert Storm? That's where my late husband served on Crash Crew for the Marine Corp. I met him the *night* he got off the plane from deployment, and just never left. He passed in 2014 from complications of Gulf War Syndrome...its a real thing. I'm very NOT like other military wives...I never wanted children, I worked in the music industry, the other wives were polite but I had no sincere friends there on base. But when it came time...his *brothers* in the Corp were 100% there for me. So, now we're both crying... but together, yeah?

Sabaton is symphonic, historic and power Metal. You want adrenaline, no problem; check Woodstock, Poland 2012 or Wacken 2019, or "Screaming Eagles" official video, or many, many of Sabaton songs. On the other end of their art are songs like " The final solution", "Inmate 4859" or "The price of a mile". They treat history with respect it deserves and teaching us how dangerous it is to forget. By the way, they write all lyrics and music themselves. There also is Sabaton History Channel, were all their songs are explained. Great reaction tho, and never apologise for the way you feel. With Sabaton you'll get that a lot.

You are not the only one having a hard time keeping it dry through this! My dad died 4 years ago, he never liked rock (Frank Sinatra and Jim Reeves was more to his liking), but I know he would've liked this...simply because of the story it tells. Every single time Sabaton tells a story about the pain, horror, glory and heroes of war, I think about how my dad would've liked to hear this story... Oh, and the sabaton, it's a protective covering of the top of the shoe/ foot, covering up to the front of the ankle.

Great reaction, and you are correct, Sabaton has no equal/competition. They don't glorify the wars the sing about, they give you the lost history and human reaction of them instead. Being over 50+, I would have given anything to have something like this in my world history classes back in the day. SO much has been lost over time, people need to remember. Sabaton also has their own history channel, breaking down the lyrics and the meaning and thought behind the music and influences of said history and memory. Thank you for your story as well. I believe this European metal scene has taken to heart the lessons of Bill and Ted. "Be excellent to each other." Never ceases to amaze me how music can draw out emotions and help learn to process deep seated pain.

To Sabaton: as often, you feel the right things. In the past, they are categorized as Powermetal, but those pepole who put them into this box were astonished and angry, when Sabaton did something other. (To be true, Sabaton is big and don´t care about any box they are put in) There are only two red threads in thier band life. 1. They make Songs about war and military storys. 2. And to tell those stories, they use all means and styles of the "Metal" music genre in the widest sense.

You have a military background ,you may like this song about a soldier left behind wounded after the battle. By the German metal band Null Positiv, the song is "Wo Rauch ist,ist auch feuer" (where there's smoke, is fire), musically outstanding and singer Elli Berlin is incredible. I think "En livstid i krig" would be a good song to look at. It talks a lot about the same subject, the brotherhood and the longing to go home. Even though it's in Swedish, it has good subtitles (the live version from Gothenburg). Also you where correct, it's Jo-a-kim with a hard k :)

Hate is stupid. underneath the veil of flesh, we are all the same. we all want the same things. be able to go do something productive that provides for our families, let's us have a modicum of comfort and ease. let's us retire at a reasonable age to enjoy the rewards of our labor. that's all anybody wants. nobody wants to destroy their country. don't listen to anyone from either side of the political spectrum that tries to tell you any different.

No worries! All of us big men have tears in our eyes when they do this kinda production! I m a big grown swede and my great grand father was in the war and was sunked by the Germans and the ship sanked but he was able to rescue the entire crew and was honuored for that so every song and production Sabaton makes goes in my heart, brain and eyes. I hope it might help out. å: like the vovel sound in 'more'. ä: like the first vovel sound in 'mare' (female horse, not sure if there are other words spelled the same but pronounced differently, hence the clarification). ö: like the vovel sound in 'burn'. The o with a line through it is similar to ö but that's Danish and Norwegian. (And if anyone feel there are other words that make more sense to compare to please feel free to add your suggestions.)

Have never listened to this song with a dry eye. As soon as the piano starts, manly tears are shed. We cry together. Once again great reaction. And I love your life view as well. Incidentally - this is isn't a reaction request by the way - there's a mini-series that came out in the 1980s called ANZACS. Needless to say, it's about the ANZACS of WW1 and follows a regiment of troops from conception, through Gallipoli, through France and their eventual repatriation at the end of the war. It's available to view here on KZfaq and something tells me you'd really like it. It's basically the Australian equivalent of Band of Brothers, before Band of Brothers was even a thing.

Great reaction. I think I was one of the ones recommending this so sorry if you felt this was sadistic to suggest. Sabaton is a great band and they specialize in war history, so many of there songs have an emotional streak to them. This one is a bit different since they specifically aimed to do the story justice through a Christmas song. They tend to be more of a power metal band and so you will find more of the metal elements in their songs if you keep exploring. I hope you do, despite some emotional turmoil every now and then... =)

I have great admiration for your ability to express emotions and life in a brilliant and heartfelt manner. I did an in depth study and article in a publication I edited and published regarding this event and in many ways it was the greatest revolt in the history of warfare. Those "behind the desks" were melting down and issued orders that it would never happen again without repercussions. It was the unveiling of "what if they gave a war and nobody participated?" Sabaton is likely to be taught as a college course - credits for watching and listening to their music. I have dear friends who say what you said - "I miss the brotherhood" and I completely understand what is meant, not because I served, but because I listen to them. Brilliant reaction, brilliant response and much respect, my friend.

absolutely no shame in crying when you hear a sabaton song for the first time. you could call it a test of humanity :-). They are absolutely unparalled in what they do. Joakim and Par are the hart and soul of this band. They went through a complete renewal of the line-up because the rest at the time did'nt want to go all in, they did and managed to reach a very special place in the heart of many many fans. How they approach the history of war is unique. They don't glorify war, they don't choose sides, but they highlight the humanity of soldiers, the depth of their courage and sacrifice. They make you proud of soldiers of many nations, because you are proud of their humanity. And Sabaton use their music to tell their stories, so they are never forgotten. They show a respect and an understanding that is rare. It is a deep rabbithole, but extremely rewarding, if you are open to those stories. I can recommend a number of songs, from lost batallion, to hell and back about Audie Murphy, 40-1 which made them heroes to the polish people because it is about a forgotten battle that the poles even lost, but how they lost was everything... en listvid i krig, in Swedish about the 30 year war and what a generation of war does to people, but most of all: they have two collaborations with yarnhub, bringing to life two very different stories. They are absolutely must watch videos: no bullets fly and night witches. prepare to cry. but hey: that just means you're human.

I think the most amazing thing about this whole thing is how pitch-perfect the video is. Meaning, it's a wonderful story of humanity during wartime, but after they've exchanged gifts and played (European) football together, they go right back to shooting and they even blow up the piano sitting in No Man's Land. What could have been a straightforward, sappy parable ended up being not so neat and tidy, just like history itself. I totally agree about the Ennio Morricone bit. The ending credits look and sound like they belong at the end of a feature film. It was amazing. Thank you for the reaction. It was not only entertaining but also informative. The great thing about Sabaton is that you just can't make these stories up. (The Last Battle is a pretty crazy one. Did you know the American and German forces once teamed up to rescue prisoners in a castle from Nazi loyalists? This happened just before the end of WWII.) I think they said once that they don't like singing about fantasy themes because there's so much real material that's way more powerful. At least I think it is, because it actually happened.

Thank you very much for your heartfelt reaction. I also lived the fact that you took the time to let the credits rolls so that Floors aerial voice was heard. You were right about the band and it's members in the end. You have 10 years of awesome music to explore, mostly a little bit harder than this. Sabaton has done a lot of American war stories, and they really make an effort to make both lyrics and their videos as historical correct as possible. Screaming Eagles about the battle of Bastogne is one of those that I recommend (must admit I concurred on a vid mentioned in another comment to) 😆. Liked and subbed!

Beyond the excellent production value of the opening battle scene it helps drive home that first "Silence." Going from gunfire, explosions, and screams of pain to that beautiful piano and the quieting of the battlefield. Sabaton is simply marvelous.

Don't worry this song brings me to tears too. Amazing video and Floor singing at the end credits to top it off. We lost Family in WW1 and WW2 never easy to imagine what these brave people went through but at the same time knowing why War isn't always the Answer.

The spiked helmet (pickelhaube) was used until 1916, so it would have been the right German helmet for the Christmas Truce.

This is such a great song and video. Sabaton does music about history about war and things that actually have happend. The other songs are more heavy metal than this song. And it is more then okay to get emotional it only makes you more human and i love it.

I am a veteran like you (luckily no actual combat) and this video and song captures that sense of brotherhood you so beautifully described. Been sharing this with all my service buddies, most of whom are not metal heads, and they are all blown away by this. The cherry on top is Floor's soaring beautiful vocals in the outro that kills me everytime if I am not tearing upby then. Just epic and divine.

I love Sabaton's integration of metal/rock with history. I especially love their collaborations with Yarnhub animation. Another amazing video Eric! So much of what you said hits home to me. My husband, Brian, feels exactly like you do. He is very uncomfortable when people thank him for his service too - to the point we rarely mention it on Veteran's Day. I just give him a big hug and tell him how precious his life is is and how thankful I am that he is here with me. That serves the purpose in ways the other platitude doesn't seem to manage. He was Air Force for many years. He feels the same way, yet there is another aspect of it for him. He knows exactly what the powers that be do with war, and many of the why's. War is big business. He was Air Force, but pulled into the more covert aspects of service and what he saw/experienced in that aspect of it all......yes. It makes him extremely uncomfortable when people thank him for his service bc of that, but also as you said, his brethren aren't here with him to share in that thanks. I think that the two of you would have a LOT of amazing things to discuss - not only with music and the music business, but he and I both are (and always will be) students of history and we are big in war history, and he does work in film now. He has been involved in film for quite a long time in quiet ways. Now, he and his partners are working on some exciting stuff with the aim of making good films once again - most of what's out there is pure shit. Pardon my curtness lol! He is a gifted writer as well (black balled in the industry for the things he wrote about - to much reality/truth in his work). I'll have to share, or he can, some of that through an email or something at some point. But I think there are many things that you guys would have in conversation that would be very beneficial - on several levels. I realize you don't know me or my husband from Adam, but I just have something on my Spirit to offer the connection. You guys, I have a feeling, are kindred spirits and I think there's an awful lot yall have in common - even down to your top bands. Christmas Truce is perhaps my favourite music video ever made and the best Christmas song in a very, very long time! Everything about it is beautiful and so utterly relevant even today. It was released at the perfect time and Sabaton spared nothing to get the message through! Even though I'm a swede I had not recognized Sabaton more than knowing they existed and that they are Swedens most successful metal band. But now I'm hooked and so grateful for what they do! They deserve every bit of success they've got and so much more!

On point, again, sir! Fascinating reaction. Like you mention, Sabaton are unique, both in their music and mini-films (to call them mere videos is an injustice). Steven Spielberg would be proud to put his name to something like this. On a slight aside, and it may seem trivial, but to me, one of the most impressive aspects of their production is the lighting - it really creates exactly the atmosphere they intend. The lighting on Par's face, as he gazes on the inscription on the cross, at the end, is beautiful. Like I say, it may seem trivial to some, but it impressed me mightily. And all this before we even talk about the actual musicianship. Actually, I ain't gonna talk about it, for you already said it all! 🙂 With your obvious interest in history, you are gonna love delving into Sabaton's back catalogue.

Quite powerful song from Sabaton, and quite powerful reaction from you! Music wise, this is my favorite from Sabaton. My second most favorite from them is the "Uprising" and especially the OFFICIAL LIVE. Powerful, and more rock. All Sabaton's songs and videos are moments of military history, they are military history puffs.

I know I'm like a year late to this video but on a Christmas Truce bender at the moment looking through all the reactions and stuff so I'll comment while I'm here because I like your take. Being in the crowd in any rock/metal concert is amazing but this song specifically is one of those things where you don't really feel it like the normal "just a rock community event", it's more of a general human connection thing, y'know. I don't know how to explain it, but there is a very distinct difference and it feels absolutely unreal the sheer level of connection and compassion one can feel for humanity as a whole when everyone in your field of view is singing the words while understanding what they symbolise. The Sabaton guys are incredibly nice too, what quality stuff they make, live and otherwise. If just hearing the song is such a moving experience and especially if it has the extra bonus of a strong video production, hearing and participating in the emotion on the spot is a whole other kind of thing. This is one of those rare Christmas songs that I don't actiively hate and is part of the list of maybe four Cristmas songs total that I like (love) enough to listen to all year round. Even when things are shit, this song gives a big boost of hope that even if not for that long, things will get better sooner or later. It's good to have a way to reliably get that feeling from somewhere. I greatly appreaciate your input. I don't personally know anyone that has served (I think one of my uncles did but I've never been that close with that side of the familty so I could be remembering that wrong) but as I do enjoy reading about military history and such things in general and listen to multiple artists that talk about it (including Sabaton), I like that you talk about your experience and understanding of what that means to you. Thank you for sharing your experience.

As always, awesome reaction 🤘🤘🤘🤘 just to let you know in 2015 Nightwish headline a US. Tour with Sabaton. First tour of Floor Jansen as a Nightwish member. The tour started in Hammerstein's Ballroom NYC. And I was there.

Im retired US Army Special Forces , my father was retired Navy master chief w/3 tours in Vietnam. I understand what your saying, it hits deep inside. Anyway, Hannes is married to Floor and as mentioned Floor sang the outro. Check out Bismark, Sabaton is the foot peice of armor.

Sabaton doesn't just sing about history, they have a way of making you feel the history as if you were a participant.

It is not stated anywhere, but I hear a lot of Tommy Johansson arrangement in the background, he did some arrangements for Floor, just check out her Ave Maria or even better Adagio on her channel🤓

Sabaton are probably the best tellers of the stories from the wars, if you do not shed a tear watching this you have no soul, it drives home how awful war really is. Having Floor Jansen (Married to Hannes the drummer) sing the outro was just something else, it was a pure emotion song that told its story exceptionally well

Yep, it has that effect Eric, you're not alone. I believe the underlying melody is based on Carol of the Bells by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych in 1914. It wasn't just this documented event either, several areas had an unofficial truce. Worse, when you dig into the real records and find that units were re-deployed so they were not shooting at "friends", some refused to fire on the "enemy" or were caught purposely aiming off, some of these along with the shell-shocked and mentally destroyed troops were field executed for either cowardice or disobeying orders. The cross exists to this day accurately as near as makes no difference where it originally stood.

This song is amazing and I can't help but cry when I hear it. I love Sabaton and I learn so much from their music. Night Witches is one of my favorites. Floor Jensen is singing the end credits and she is the amazing vocalist for Nightwish, which is another amazing band!

sabaton is best live especially in person i seen them twice in New York but the live videos they do are great and so are the story videos like bismark talk about production value like a million

I were an little bit surprised, as you explained Christmas truce before and after the Vid, but then again, i remember the American Education System i witnessed as the 1st Armored were stationed an decade into my early Teens till 90(me21) at my Hometown Border, and Gi`s and their Offspring were natural Part of our Community. Then the did fly out to Iran and never come back. We over here , especially in Germany, been defeated twice, and our Education let no one escape the History from WW I and WWII at any way, also the political Surroundings, such Events, even if not really written down, like Christmas Truce. Also your Statement about Soldiers, point Brothers in Arms along, well thanks for sharing your Mindset with us. An Saying, often bought up here, from far Left at first and really tinkered in German normal use of Speech is *Stell Dir vor, es ist Krieg, und keiner geht hin.* Imagine, its war, and nobody shows up. In The End all this BS is about Power, Money and Supremacy, but the Agitators never show up on the Front. The conditioned 15s to 30s yrs spill Blood for their Money, Fame and Power. It's stranger when i just listen to this song on the album it's a great song, but i can enjoy it without crying 5 secs. into the video and the tears are just runni9ng down my cheeks.

The Sabaton History Channel is great to learn history of the battles Sabaton sing about and Indy who does the narration has now done 2 videos with Sabaton. He is such a entertaining historian.
