Thank you for such a clear analysis of Sonny Rollins’ Blue 7. I’ve listened to it for years, since it first came out (I’m in my mid 70s) and never heard what you’ve opened my ears to.

Beautiful! I love the faces you make when listening to this solo. Bob Reynolds just did an analysis of a Chris Potter solo - and Scott Paddock just did one of David Sanborn. The facial expressions and body language actually help to understand the music better.

Thanks for the deconstruction of this quirky and brilliant solo. I've tried this, and have a question about hitting that high F#. I can make it crack like that, but I would love to be able to play that note with a clear and full sound when I do my technical exercises. I use a forked F with side E and have to add the f key in order to tune it up. But it would never pass the test of scrutiny, including my own. Any suggestions?

For high F# on tenor you could try 1-3 / 1-Eb?

Great video, great solo! Question though....when you say he's outlining the changes and use the #11 as the example... how is that outlining? Its not a chord tone or a diatonic chord tone. Is it because its an altered dominant ? Being non chord tone and non diatonic, are you saying it outlines the outsideness (new word) of the chord?
@GetYourSaxTogether
@GetYourSaxTogether Жыл бұрын
Interesting point - I wasn’t thinking about it that deeply I don’t think. The chord is a dominant #11 chord and he plays the #11. That’s about it! I agree it’s not what you’d typically describe as a chord tone in the strict sense of the term, yes. Thanks for commenting.

I knew were not on you mark 6 last time and this time you are on another horn and it turns out to be Yamaha. I like the sound you get on it. What model ? Enjoy your commentary on this solo very much! I have to say again-that Yamaha has a lot of depth and character on this solo.

I got to ask Jamie, maybe I missed something but did you get a new tenor? This one looks much shinier than you're six. I remember you tested out some horns but don't remember if you opted to get a new one. And thanks for all the great information

I just listened to a 10h European podcast radio show on Sonny Rollins (yes, 10x 1h, covering 1951-2001 !!!). My opinion of Rollins is that it seems very overrated to me. First of all as a player, he does not seem to me better than Johnny Griffin, Stitt, Roland Kirk, Phil Woods, Lateef ... but enjoys a much more important reputation ... and unjustified in my opinion. Ok he plays well, but not better than the musicians I mentioned. In terms of composition, he did not compose anything, everyone knows that St Thomas is a Caribbean folklore already recorded by Randy Weston in 1955 under the title Fire Down There. His other compositions from the 50s ... well, Oleo, Airegin etc ... this can in no way be compared to the compositions of Trane, Bird, Monk or Shorter ... also, his playing and his sound are terribly degraded after 1966 (36 years). It seems that he was traumatized by the arrival of Ornette, Trane, Ayler ... In the 60's he tried to be more free than Ayler, more calypso / blues than Ornette, and more mystical than Trane, but he didn't. did not succeed. Then in the 70s / 80s he tried to be funky, disco ... with really ridiculous and cheesy results ... Did he want to be funkier than James Brown himself? Also, in the radio show they say that he was paid current $ 300,000 for himself to record the Nucleus album (so listen to the result !!!!), and that, for his concerts, his financial claims were unrealistic, only the big festivals could afford it. He played with the Stones but didn't want to go on tour with them because, according to Jagger himself, he wanted too much money! I mean, I'm not making anything up here. In my opinion, he should have remained what he was before, a disciple of Bird at the Tenor, and quit at the age of 40 to leave a quality job, and without trying to follow fashion. Thank you for not insulting me because I have documented myself on Rollins and I like to have constructive discussions without being attacked on my person.

I’m certainly not gonna attack you my friend! You’ve laid out your argument and your opinions clearly and at length. It would be quite a boring world if we all thought the same! Thanks for commenting, and I’m sure Sonny would appreciate the time and thought you put into this epic argument, if for no other reason, you’ve obviously taken the time to listen to his whole catalog!

Your instrument doesn't do this solo any justice, sounded harsh on the ears compared to that smooth flowing mellow tone of Sonny's Sax.
