In my mind , Alanis was the beginning of confessional pop females. She paved the way for today’s Taylor and Olivia. They aren’t afraid of raw lyrics or raw vocal sounds.

But for me being a 90s grunge kid she was the female sensibility side of the era along with the Cranberries. Alanis was part of alternative rock for us and was played alongside Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins, etc. Also Taylor Hawkins played on this album.

Thank you for playing my request. I know exactly what you mean about the beginning making you a little emotional even though it's not really emotional. Alanis's style was so down to earth, she's a beautiful girl but seemingly not self-absorbed, and the ideas in this song are thoughts we've all had. Her four characters in the video are each someone we all know and probably like. The song and video are clever and something we can all relate to. When her album came out it was something unlike anything else at the time. It wasn't the dance music of Whitney, the glam metal of Heart, or the folky singer/songwriter material of Melissa Ethridge. Instead it was the honest raw emotion of Alanis and people went crazy over it because it was a level of being human we weren't used to at that time.

Her vocals make the song, so expressive, it conveys the lyrics almost like she's having a casual conversation with you, and it's hard to disagree with what she's saying, it speaks to all of us. It makes me happy to remember a time when this type of songs could become popular because people actually listened, and all 4 versions of her in the video are cute lol

That is a typical Ontario winter drive. Freezing cold out, out for a drive (when it was very affordable). This album (surprisingly her 3rd: her first albums were more teenage pop. So this album was a completely different from before. It rocketed her straight to the top, and her in Canada, her songs were played everywhere.

100% agree with you, the sound is emotional, although the lyrics themselves aren't. Too many people have just focused on the things she says as not being ironic, just bad luck and totally miss the emotion of the song. You were caught up in the music, good for you. Although many other pop/rock singers' styles have been copied successfully by up and coming artists, none have matched Alanis's style.

Few cool things about her and this song..... Alanis has been quoted as saying "I write for me I don't write for my fans or the public in general" she just looks at it as her therapy and if it sells, even better. The very cool thing about this song is none of the lyrics themselves are ironic but the song is named ironic and that's what makes it ironic. The different clones of her in the car are supposed to represent different parts of her personality. You've got the fun one in the passenger front seat, the crazy one in the passenger back seat, and the shy introverted one in the driver back seat. She's always been one of my favorites because of her originality, she's not just another cookie cutter artist like most people are or were in those days. Peace
