And the drum, in my opinion, is a symbol of defiance, resistance, like the one that called the ancient Cossack defenders to battle. After all, during the times of the Ukrainian Cossack state "Zaporozhian Army" 1648-1782, drums were one of its symbols. Drums called the Cossacks to meetings, where the majority decided by voting various important issues. Drums signaled danger, an enemy attack. Drums called the Cossacks to battle, and battle drums (timpani) are a military instrument, he; like no other, he terrified the enemy with his thunderous blows, was a means of communication between the Cossack units (with special conditional signals during the battle, orders were transmitted to the troops) and kept the rhythm of the infantry. And the words of the song "beat the drum, raise the mace Otaman" were added by Artem, he must have felt this poem the same way I did. After all, the Ataman is the elected leader of the army and the state, and the mace is a symbol of power.
