Saw Billy many years ago in Melbourne. He had us crying with laughter and sliding off our seats. But almost the funnier thing was our friend who was with us and who didn’t laugh once, when asked if he didn’t find Billy funny said, “I didn’t understand a word that he said”. That set us off all over again.

This is my favourite comedy routine of all time. It was for comic relief and I had the cassette tape of the concert with him doing this one. My friends and I would listen to it all the time during our high school years in the mid-late 80’s. We would hire VHS tapes of his performances and watch them as well. Finally got to see him live in the 90’s. A couple of years later I was living in Kings Cross in Sydney and I ran into him in the street. Lovely fellow with a real curiosity about the world. Australians and Scots look at the world in very similar ways and use about the same amount of swearing in casual conversation, so Billy’s style of comedy always went down well in Australia (and NZ). These were the first countries outside of the British Isles to take to his humour.

We live in Sydney. My girlfriend (now wife) and I first heard of Billy in the late seventies. We rented a video of his live performances. The video went for about an hour. It took us at least three hours to watch because a) we couldn't understand what he was saying because of the outrageous accent ; and b) once we did understand what he was saying we had to pause or rewind the tape as we were rolling about in hysterics. We've been devoted fans ever since. Him marrying an Australian beauty was the icing on the cake.

I have been to many concerts that Billy has done in Oz, the last one he told people if you have a babysitter it's time to go. For the others he said keep sitting and enjoy as I'm not going anywhere. Love Billy's storytelling and sense of the ridiculous 😊 BTW, the bush and the desert aren't exactly the same thing. 'The bush' usually refers to grasslands with eucalyptus trees. Even in the centre of Australia (informally known as the Red Centre) there are eucalyptus trees and bushes, and they do get substantial rain occasionally (check out vids of Uluru during a downpour) so it's not all a true desert.

I reckon if we had the will (or any country for that matter) we could green the desert. It's being done everywhere. I guess there's just not the overwhelming necessity yet 🤔🤷‍♂️.

@@riverland22 everyone says there's nothing in the desert. Not true. To our European aesthetic there's nothing but to traditional owners it's a supermarket that never closes. It has supported the oldest continuous culture for 10s of thousands of years, providing food and shelter to those who are the true custodians of the land. I loved the camping trips I did in the outback. If you green it, you destroy it.
@riverland22
@riverland22 Ай бұрын
@waynedwyer6509 well true, I know what you mean. The Aborigines had a shop on every corner one might say. But the real deserts with nothing in them but sand could be improved I feel. I'd rather eat a peach than a grub or a moth 😏.
@waynedwyer6509
@waynedwyer6509 Ай бұрын
@@riverland22 as a non indigenous person I would not choose to eat those things either. But there are many bush tucker plants that do not grow anywhere other than their natural habitat. There is more than just food to consider. There must be other results that occur when the natural environment is altered. I am no scientist but this seems logical to me.
@riverland22
