I spent 10 years in Scotland as an adult but as a ten-pound Pom in the sixties, migrated to and grew up in Brisbane. We tend to take Brissie for granted but with a population of 2.5million with a sub-tropical climate it is relaxed, clean and generally speaking a very healthy, safe and friendly place to grow up in without any permanently dangerous no-go areas. Try saying that in London, Paris, New York, San Fransicko, LA, DC, Stockholm etc etc. Extend the city's environs an hours drive north or south to encompass the Sunshine and Gold Coasts including pristine rainforest hinterlands and endless miles of glorious surf beaches and believe me, there is plenty to get enthused about.

I grew up in Brisbane and consider it my second home (after Finland)-even though I spent more of my life in the UK. When I moved away, the South Bank hadn't even begun to be constructed. In subsequent visits, it began appearing (first in World Expo 88) and then its own entity. I saw the Arbour Walkway very early in its life too. I visited Brissie again for the first time in many years at the start of the year (2023) and it was a really emotional homecoming. I used to live at the end of Kangaroo Point directly across from the CBD and in the shadow of Story Bridge. This was when there was still Queenslander houses, not solid apartment blocks like now. There is a sandy beach that formed in the river at the end of the point when the river stopped being used by heavy traffic and became much cleaner. This was the original Brisbane beach! Anyone who says South Bank is the only thing happening in Brisbane has only visited South Bank...🙄

I live in Brisbane. I've been here since 2006 and can't see myself leaving any time soon. It's a wonderful city to live in. It feels more like a large country town. Southbank is beautiful, the Mt Cootha Botantical Gardens are stunning, Roma St Parklands. The University of Queensland St Lucia Campus is worth checking out as well.

Southbank was built on the former Expo 88 site. It in turn was built on the former docks. I've lived here most of my life, have travelled the world extensively and am always happy to come home. Love the climate. Always plenty to do and see sometimes at a slower pace than the other capitals, but that is not a bad thing.

I live in Gold Coast now , but Mum was from Brisbane, where she met Dad , where I was born and I remember lots of mosquitos and humidity in summer. What I have always liked about Brisbane is the Queensland style houses , they are beautiful , with big verandahs , my grandparents lived in one.The Gold Coast is more modern style houses around , except in my little enclave of Mudgereeba where there are still these historic buildings around and it is very charming.

Brisbane is a beautiful city and it's comparable to any of the other big cities in the country. Southbank is amazing. We took our kids there for swimming when they were little and they loved it and now they take their kids there. The water is not very deep and there is a freshwater part and a salt water part, from memory. The city is great.

I move to Brisbane around 15 yrs ago and love it. They have really developed all the bike lane/paths so going out on an e scooter you can get everywhere around the city and Southbank and further so easy that exploring is great fun. In one ride you can go from parklands to city to bridges to tropical beach to rainforest to river front and into the city all on really smooth riding paths with endless cafes and things to stop and look at along the way.

There are walking and bike tracks both sides of the river, and all over the city. Pedestrian bridges over the river too. Take a ferry or city cat for the length of the river it's a good way to see Brisbane. Lots of parks with free bbq's on the river as well. Ferries to the islands just off the coast. Don't forget the Bayside too.

There's a theatre at Southbank? Correction: The Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) comprises four theatres, the largest capable of seating 2000 people. With the planned addition of a fifth venue, QPAC will be Australia's largest theatrical precinct. Southbank also has the Queensland Museum, Queensland Art Gallery, State Library and Gallery if Modern Art. No other Australian city has all its cultural institutions in one central site like this. You could spend days there, shame this young lady knows so little about her own city.

Brisbane born and bred. Have lived here for 46 years and would live nowhere else. Have traveled all over Australia and still think Brisbane is the best city. It still has a city feel in the city centre but not the rat-race fast pace that Sydney and Melbourne have and its not as quiet as Adelaide or the other State capitals so it fits a happy compromise. Brisbane sits between the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast which both have spectacular beaches and hinterlands with rainforests and hiking trails through the mountains for all abilities. There are towns to suit all types from the nightlife clubs and parties at the Gold Coast to the sleepy beach towns further up the Sunshine Coast and everything in between (including about 6 massive theme parks). Brisbane city is full of cultural centres, museums, galleries, botanic gardens, historical sites, etc and just down the road is a Koala Sanctuary where you can actually hold a Koala (not all states allow that). Its cheaper than Sydney or Melbourne, for now, but is becoming a huge place for people to move to from within Australia due to affordability. This is all just in a tiny corner of south-east Queensland, within say a 3hour radius, there is just so much to do here, and its all so close by. I just love my home, if you can't tell 😁

I'm originally from Brissie, I lived there until I was in my early teens. I still love my old home city. I even have a historical connection to the city, my Four Times Great Grandfather John Oxley discovered it. Unfortunately, he wasn't too impressed by the fact that it was a swamp back then. But he still thought some of it was beautiful. My favourite places to visit in the city are The Queen Street, The Botanical Gardens, and City Hall. They have a museum with different displays and a 1920s lift (elevator) complete with a guide operating it. The lift goes up to the clock tower. You still need to climb some steps, I'm scared of insecure heights, but I think it's worth it. The view is incredible. I've been up there a few times. Of course, they won't take you up there if it's 12 o'clock. I understand that they don't have tours of Big Ben in London. That bell is so huge that it would rattle your nerves. My favourite places to visit in the surrounding areas of Brissie are Moora Park in Shorncliffe. I love the bandstand there. Apparently, it's a popular place to get married. I know a really good seafood business called Morgan's in the Redcliffe area, just outside Brissie. The trains still run there. If you love seafood, it's to die for. They have their own trawler, and it's fresh every day. The last time I was in Brissie, I went a little nuts in there. The people I bought dinner for didn't mind at all. It's a bit expensive, but well worth it. Unfortunately, they'd run out of their fresh bread rolls that night. Well, I live in the mountains and fresh seafood isn't that readily available.

I mostly stuck to the Queen Street mall when I went into the city. That beach is man made. The sand, I believe, is from North Stradbroke Island. South Bank is where World Expo 88 was held. Brisbane is a great city. I recommend going for a ride on the ferry up the river and back. Queen street Mall is a great place to shop, eat, go to the movies, watch street performers etc. Southbank is great for the markets, great restaurants, the beach, etc. I live four hours north so don’t visit very often but I thought she was down playing how great the city is to visit. Of course there is museums and art galleries as well if you are interested. I never have enough time to do everything there but I always enjoy the city. 😊

Love Brissy ❤ Never used to visit much until our daughter moved down there for work, but we go down a lot now and would love to move there! It’s so laid back for a capital city. It’s fast and slow at the same time, which is pretty weird! Just so much to do, even on a limited budget. Brisbane City is made for walking, bike riding and e-scooters. Buses and trains are great but the ferries are phenomenal. ❤

Grew up in Bris. I love how many green spaces and trees there are in every suburb and the city. South Bank, where the beach is in the city, (on the other side of the river), is beautiful and where you can find museums, art galleries, theatres, and all kinds of unique shops, restaurants and cafes. Great weekend markets and open-air cinema too. Another great thing about Aus cities generally, is there's a lot to do and see for free. Like in South Bank. Plus we're friendly AF mate 😊 I didn't appreciate her saying we have no culture. My only negative woukd be that most entertainment is centred in and near the city. There's very little to do outside of shopping, eating or the odd cinema in the suburbs, unlike places in Europe. Having said that though, Aussies are very family and neighbourhood proud

I’ve lived near Brisbane since I was a baby. Growing up I didn’t think much of it but as I became an adult I became more grateful for it. Brisbane is close to most environments/biomes which is great if you love road trips, hiking, camping or 4x4ing. You are usually within 2 hours from a beach, farmland, the mountains, lakes/dams, or rainforests. Not to mention that many suburbs are built around bushland. The weather can get pretty intense in the middle of summer but you make do :) The only issue I have is that the cost of living and cost of housing has skyrocketed since 2020. It is getting pretty hard to manage and is only getting worse as people from other states buy property here. The 2032 olympics will be held in Brisbane, I am a little scared to know what that means for locals.

There are many great places to swim in the mountains around south east Queensland. Much prefer them to the beaches and Southbank lagoon. They are nice for swimming but the best are hidden places in the hinterlands. I have also climbed over 200 mountains in SE Qld. We have a great variety of hiking and climbing places, a few plane wrecks to see, a interesting wildlife such as snakes, goannas, scorpions, echidnas, koalas, kangaroos etc to encounter on your adventures in the bush.

Walk through the station and just tell barrier staff where you are going. We Melburnians visited last year in very early spring and the weather was terrific however it is not so in summer. But I guess you are used to heat and humidity? We only used public transport to get around and it was quite good from a tourist perspective. Sorry but that lady doesn't impress me with her lack of knowledge of Australian culture. Australia is culture less according to the young lass. Completely forgetting that indigenous Australians have the oldest living culture in the world. Also I don't subscribe to the idea that most kangaroos are pests. They are brilliantly adapted to our boom and bust cycles (droughts and floods), they browse lightly and then move on. Never breed in droughts, and their soft pads don't disturb our thin soils. They are wrongly classed as pests by sheep and cattle farmers that overstock their properties in the good times, clear all the trees which hold the soil together, reduce evaporation and shade their stock. All in the short sighted mantality of maximising production. Until the next drought arrives and their European farming practices and non native hard hooved stock thurn up the bare paddocks once again. Then its time to seek drought relief.

It is still quiet slow paced clean fresh & glorious weather. I love both Brizzy & Melbs, but Queensland has way better weather. Doesn't matter where you go in Australia; people are friendly & welcoming. It's true that kangaroo populations can explode at times & can be in pest proportions. I agree 100% with what Garry is saying. Kangaroos are wonderful, beautiful Australian animals. The Indigenous peoples of Australia have been eating them for years upon years upon years. The rest of Australia only started eating them recently, I'd say the last 30 years. I've been in Australia for over 50 years and they weren't consumed when my family first arrived, but Kangaroo meat is now available in most supermarkets. Also agree with Garry about the culture. We have one and there was culture as well before the British arrived.

There is a beach in the city because the city is not on the beach and also the river is full of sharks or crocodiles (I can't remember which). Not having a go at Brisbane, but maybe this provides a little content. You also only live up that way if you really like steamy, humid weather. Many people love it but lots hate it too. Lots of older people like to retire in Queensland for the warm weather, rather than sitting in front of the heater in places like Melbourne for half of the year. You'd go to Perth if you prefer milder winters and hot summers, without the humidity. It has the most days of sunshine of all of the capital cities from each state.

Thinking Australia is “Culture less” is a bit bizarre. There’s Aboriginal culture, of course & then there’s our acceptance we have of other cultures, the laidback attitude that lots of visitors love, our friendliness, our coastal & bush culture which has it’s own uniqueness from other countries, our attitude that we don’t care how much money you have & we’ll dislike you if you think you’re better than others, I could go on & on. Just because we don’t have the same kind of cultural “things” other countries have, just means our culture is different…which is a good thing ✌🏼

We have our own culture. You simply don't notice a culture when it's familiar to you, like the language you speak or the accent you speak with. You don't notice you're breathing air until you're dropped into some water and notice the change.

4 species of Kangaroos are legal to hunt in specific quotas for different areas as they are classed as a pest in most areas of Australia. We also have crocodile farms for their meat and leather products. Crocodiles are illegal to hunt in the wild as they are a protected species. The leather sold in markets and shops is the byproduct of the crocodile farms and kangaroo hunting industries. Kangaroo meat is very lean and high in protein, therefore it is ranked highly in the health food industry, not to mention being very tasty! 😂. Cane toads are a full on introduced pest and there is no limit on catching them or products made from their skins.

I live in Brisbane and I hate it 😂 I used to live in Warwick but had to move here for the family. And hunting kangaroos is definitely not legal without a permit

I've lived in 4 Aussie cities. Melbourne is my favourite but Brisbane was a good place to grow up. I think you'd like the relatively relaxed lifestyle, and the humidity wouldn't bother you after all those years in Malaysia. BTW the beach in the city is fake. Brisbane is built around a river. If you want lovely naturally occurring beaches, you need to head to Stradbroke Island, Moreton Island, the Gold Coast or the Sunshine Coast.

The sand was sourced from the Gold Coast. In 1988 South Bank Brisbane was redeveloped for EXPO 88. They had pavilions from I think about 120 different countries. They had rides & 1 hell of a rollercoaster. Brisbane has hosted the Commonwealth games, the Goodwill games & has host many other world sporting events. Brisbane's night life is better than Sydney's & Melbourne's. Yes it's hot in summer, but that why air-conditioners were invented.

Kangaroos have benefited greatly from the clearing of forests for farmland and the active suppression of dingoes for a long time now, and most people in the country don't consider them pests but there are plenty enough of them to be used as food resource. Southbank in Brisbane is completely man made and there are many of these types of facilities in Australian cities, even smaller cities, and they are always free.

Kangaroos are NOT A PEST! They are native to the country and have been here before humans. We are the pest! Farmers using that excuse as well as Queenslanders is getting old!!! Also Australia Does have a culture. Most youth don't seem to get it. This girl clearly doesn't get it. 🙄

To be fair...the only reason Brisbane has a man-made beach in the city is because the waterfront of Brisbane on the ocean is swamp and mud...meaning Brisbane has no beaches...or very little of them and especially within the metr area. All the other capitals (besides Canberra) have great beaches...out or them Melbourne has the worst, Sydney's are pretty and scenic but overall too small for the population and therefore crowded and hard to park and get to as a resuly...Darwin is okay but not the safest or prettiest...Hobart has a few and they are scenic and easy enough to get to but much of the waterfront just drops into the water...Adelaide and Perth have very similar beaches as they stretch almost the entirety of the metro coastline, Perths has more variation in the coastline whereas Adelaide's are quite consistant, Adelaides beaches are protected from the open ocean being on a gulf with an island covereing direct open ocean while Perths are open ocean and can be a little rough when wave dump you onto the beach minus your pants or t-shirt. Both Adelaide and Perth have easy access to parking nearly all along the metro coastline for beach access and plenty of room for the population of the cities. Overall Adelaide and Perth have the best metro beaches But overall all capitals (except Canberra, Sydney and Darwin) have easy access to stunning beaches within 2 hours drive from the metro areas

“Brisbane - well you can always go to the Gold Coast.” OMG! Burst out laughing. Sisters! My mantra when working there for 8 years was “God this is boring.” To me Brisbane is boring & no I’ve never swam in that “pool” ever - when she began to mention the change rooms - I nearly threw up. Ewghh public change rooms - disgusting. Thanks for this tho - lovely.

the problem with Brisbane imo is the fact it's in QLD. the city itself is pretty cool, but queensland isn't for me - too humid and overall the politics are less progressive (it's the home of the one nation party, for example).

I'm sorry to say this person just wants to get her head on video,if she actually lives in Brisbane she has no idea about anything there are heaps of things to do in this beautiful city, and I don't even live there. As for the kangaroos they eat the farmers crops and cause a lot of damage.

fake beach in fake brisvegas which tries too hard to be a real city without any cred. the gold coast has more cred as does the sunshine coast & cairns. brisvegas weather is dank and depressing. been to this place multiple times and never impressed by any of it. Its not underrated at all. qld'ers OVERRATE this dump.
