He was quite young when this was recorded, he was about 19 if I'm not mistaken and he only got better with time. Cowpoke shows a bit more of his vocal range.

Dude was just a kid and his songwriting is that good. I particularly love the detail of him shooting Kate with 3 rounds. Using a normal 6 bullet revolver, he also had 3 rounds for the lover. But that's not important to mention, because the dread of Kates fate overwhelms everything else

One thing that is so impressive with these Original 16 Sessions performances is the simplicity of everything. Vocals, a kick drum, and an acoustic guitar. There is both a rich and full sound, yet there is space. You hear every detail, so everything needs to feed into the story or it stands out rapidly. And he pulled it off at 19…

This song is called a murder ballad. It originated in Scandinavia, England, and lowland Scotland in the premodern era So many Irish and Scottish and English settled in Appalachia KY, WV, VA they became commen. They became more American when the Supernatural was removed. I think Colter wrote this song when he was in WV and making the album Colter Wall and Imaginary Appalachia. I do know, he was talkin with W. B. a bit and stopped by in Dingess WV about the same time. Anyhow wikipedia has a OK read on this subject if Y'all would like to know more.
