Mariah Carey set the standard for writing and producing. She still doesn't get the credit she deserves which is beyond ridiculous. The mixing and vocal layering on this track was so smooth. The birds chirping were a nice added touch to lighten things up.

Mariah definitely pioneered the pop and hip hop collaborations. Some other Mariah music videos that are "The Roof" which features Mobb Depp and "Honey Remix" that features Mase, P. Diddy, and the LOX

Mariah has never been a pop artist. I guess if we're going by the original meaning of "pop artist".. meaning popular..yes but she was never a pop artist by genre choice. Her career was founded on an RnB base with heavy soul and gospel influences.

Bone Thugs are living legends!! They are very versatile and very very unique. They do hardcore thug rap but they do smooth songs like this too. Dont deprive yourself, listen to some Bone Thugs. Only group to work with Notorious BIG, 2Pac, Eazy E and Big Pun while they were alive. So many classics. Not sure if you only like smooth songs like this or rap too but Bone has a huge core fanbase that will bring you likes and suggestions. They’ve been putting out music for over 27 years and I guarentee you’ve never heard music quite like Bone Thugs! First 3 albums are full of classics

You were viiibing! 🤣 Awesome. This is definitely top 5 Mariah for me. I never realized it until I watched someone else react and saw a comment that said she tried to match the flow of Bone Thugs with her singing style and cadence. That's brilliant! Mariah was on her A-game in the late 90s!

Mariah is a studio genius with the way she stacks and harmonizes her vocals. She needs no background singers. I have always loved this song and how she switched up her style of singing in parts to match the melodic kind of flow Bone Thugs were known for and it fit so well. She is also a great songwriter which she doesn't get enough credit for.

Great reaction, the birds chirping and the melody fit the lyrical content because it sounds like it could be an uplifting song and happy but like the lyrics say “underneath the guise of a smile gradually I’m dying inside”

Yes! The way it's layered, it feels like each part is meant to represent a different part of her psyche. The main melody of pleasant high notes is "her," with the birds chirping and pleasant high notes and stuff representing her "disguise" of feeling fine. Meanwhile the rappers who keep popping in feel like that subconscious reminder that she needs to admit reality in order to heal, but she's running away from them. Then the breakdown of the song is where reality catches up with her, and her adlibs til the end are her grappling with reality (literally her "breaking down") and finally going through her full emotional moment.

Bone Thugs N Harmony are Wish Bone, Krayzie Bone, Bizzy Bone, Layzie Bone and Flesh N Bone. They're mentor was legendary rapper Eazy-E who also signed them to his label Ruthless Records. But unfortunately Eazy-E died from aids back in the 90's. Bone Thugs song "Crossroads" is about him. And yes Bone Thugs rap with a little bit of harmony, hence the name of the group.

Eazy E signed Bone into his label. When Eazy died, Bone went back to the studio to remake the song "Crossroads." The song won a grammy for Bone. You definitely have to react to the song "Tha Crossroads" along with the music video. Bone is my favorite rap group. There's 5 members is the group, Krayzie Bone, Layzie Bone, Bizzy Bone, Wish Bone, and Flesh-n-Bone. Once you dig into Bone, you'll be in for a treat.
