They played this at 1.2x speed live in the '80s EDIT: this is the first ever MetallicA harmony, so it's kinda special song 7:30 Also the end of the song from the '80s live versions is as great as Micheal Scott's "NO NO NO NO NOOOO"

11:40 that part gets me every single time I listen to this song! It’s just so brutal and makes the song more epic and thrashy! Just the energy and everything. Man that’s so the best part of the whole entire song

That sound is the crazy pick attack James was getting from his legendary “Magical Mythical Marshal” amp head that he had modified sonically. Their gear got stolen in Boston later that year…along with that head…still to this day, one of my favorite guitar sounds

When Kill 'Em All came out in 1983 it definitely lived up to its title. No one else could match Metallica's brute force. Kind of like when Mike Tyson hit the heavyweight boxing scene a few yrs. later. Beast on record, Beast in ring.

Their lead guitarist definitely has a blues feel in many of his solos. I love it combined with the power of metal 🤘
@yearginclarke

I love the feel of the opening solo, just pure badassery with some definite blues rock influence. It's almost like Hendrix meets high gain guitar tone + thrash metal! And yes, I know more about Mustaine's leads than most people do, having been a fan for 27 years and playing guitar for 22, so don't even go there people reading this comment. I like Kirk's approach to the KEA solos much better than what Dave's sounded like on the demos and live performances. Granted Dave didn't get to record in the studio where everything is made to be perfect, but I still think Kirk would have been better anyway. Much more precise and solid, nothing where it shouldn't be. No self indulgent fretboard wanking. He makes the solos REALLY fit the mood and context of the songs.

Great stuff. Especially when you consider the fact that this was their debut album and very first attempt at writing music as a band. These guys were very young musicians at this time.

That scratchy sound going into the solo is the edge of the guitar pick being slid back and forth on the round wound guitar strings.

Metal is an evolution of rock, which was an evolution of Blues - so hearing blues influences is not unexpected. Black Sabbath for instance who was considered the godfather of metal has major blues influences in their music. Your point with your saxophone is another gem - yah, like jazz/blues, when jamming, each instrument would take a moment to showcase and do a little improv - all while the rhythm and melody played in the background, so the improv stays within the scale and tempo of the song that is being played. Same concept for a guitar solo (or the rare drum or bass solo) in a metal song. Music composition theory still applies and as you can see/hear, it's universal. Then take the lyrics of metal and it's most akin to rap music (at least good - old school rap) - both are deep, and profoundly written and cut like a knife. When you break it down, there are a lot of similarities of rap and metal considering where they originated, and the intent of the music to create a major emotional response on the lyrics. When you think of a profoundly angry sounding rap song it brings the same energy and angst that metal does. That's why metal and rap go so well together in nu-metal style that has become so popular over the past 20 years (a la Rage Against the Machine, or Linkin Park style).

WHAT! He reacted to No Remorse under my radar!?!?! One of their most underrated or rather underappreciated songs and the wildest intro. The intro was my wake up alarm for a long time and I always let it finish🤘 For as long as I've known this song and been on KZfaq I've only seen 2 people ever mentioning this song in the comments and the second reaction channel followed that has reacted to it. And I follow like 10... "Blitzkrieg" is another super neglected song that goes so hard with the riffs and the solo is tasty.

Now, please move on to the RIDE THE LIGHTNING album. I just got it on CD last Saturday as my "21st birthday gift". It's even more crazy than KILL 'EM ALL. Bass is better there, and Cliff Burton has most contributions on that album (especially for the guitar harmonies, and also for the legendary intro on "For Whom The Bell Tolls" - he wrote it in 1976)
