Hi! I have been an ABBA fan since I was 3. I still remember my late mother, who I miss dreadfully, taking me to the record shop to get my first abba record, i was so short i couldn' t reach the record bins, hey i'm still so short i can't reach my kitchen cupboards lol. abba were and still are massively popular in australia which brings in our norman(garry macdonald) Gunston . who did this very popular tribute to abba. I love it as much as real abba. abba have just been awarded the swedish royal order of vasa and all four of them were in public together again. so as a tribute to abba and norman here is this gem from my childhood. i miss my mum so much

Norman's interview with Sally Struthers and also with Cheech and Chong were absolutely hilarious. Sally couldn't help noticing the toilet paper all over his face and commented "You should get an electric razor!" Norman said that's what he uses, and Sally laughed so hard she ended up begging for help. Tommy Chong lit a (regular) pipe during the interview. Norman asked "Err...is that?... are you?..." And Tommy said of course not, it's tobacco. Norman motioned for him to pass it to him, sniffed it, took a hit, coughed and passed it back to him, pointing at the pipe and nodding his head. Cheech fell to the ground. Oh, and also at a big press conference when Guns'n'Roses arrived in Australia, Norman said he had a question for Mr Hubcap. The band was confused, then they realised he got Axl confused with another vehicle part, and laughed hard. 🤣

Most celebrities had no idea what they were getting into when they agreed to an interview with Norman, and many were downright perplexed or broke down part way through. A couple that caught on immediately and played along to great effect were Paul McCartney and Frank Zappa. The Zappa interview is wonderful for the jamming session Norman has with him, accompanying Zappa with some really great blues harmonica (Garry McDonald is actually a very accomplished harmonica player, something that’s not usually obvious when Norman’s puffing and sucking on it).

Norman Gunston was dangerously funny. Even Garry MacDonald, his creator, never knew what Norman would do next or even say. So cutting edge for the seventies.

Norman Gunston is the alter ego of amazing actor Garry Mcdonald. He would do hilarious celebrity interviews in the 70s. The celebrities assume he was a serious interviewer and he would ask questions where he was getting the wrong end of the stick. It was wonderful. He had several shows as Norman Gunston, a character best remembered for the tissue on his face (covering shaving cuts) and by pure chance being on the steps of Parliament front and centre when Prime Minister Gough Whitlam was dismissed. He appeared on the first colour TV show in Australia, Auntie Jack and the long running Mother and Son.

A great actor, while sensitive and anxious too, he did lots of sight gags and deadpan humour usually hiding behind this beloved character! His fun interview with Sally Struthers is truly worth watching, and the long running Mother & Son series showed another side! 😂 He also did a song on stage with John Farnham! 😁

A lot of people don’t realise that ‘Mama Mia’ wasn’t supposed to released as a Single. In fact, Molly Meldrum, TV Host and Music Guru here, played it repeatedly on his TV Show ‘Countdown’, then petitioned (with the help of the Public) their Distributor here to release it as a Single. They straight out refused. But after it was gaining huge attention here, despite just being an Album Track, they finally were convinced to do it. At the time it was an Australia only Single (and remained No.1 for 10 consecutive Weeks), then that caught the attention of their UK Distributor, and they did the same thing. Then it just kept spreading. From an Article - Today, many decades after the song was first heard, ‘Mamma Mia’ as a concept has become something much bigger than just the album track it was originally intended to remain. But it may be worthwhile to remember that there would have been no blockbuster musical or movie of that name if the Australian population hadn’t responded so strongly to the song way back when. As Benny sums it up, “We have always been grateful to the Australian audience, because that’s when things started to happen.”

Norman Gunston character started in the early 70’s with the Aunty Jack show. Hugely popular tv show. They have a great song on KZfaq called “Wollongong the brave”. Wollongong is an industrial city south of Sydney and as the aunty jack actors were all from Sydney they would lampoon Wollongong. After Aunty Jack finished, the Norman Gunston character lived on in a new TV show. He would interview famous celebrities with his deadpan looks, bloodied tissues covering shaving nicks and absurd questions. The celebrities weren’t sure if he was serious or taking the piss. 😀

Early 70's bloke but true it was a long time ago, I remember watching Aunty Jack and going to school to tell other kids "I am going to rip your bloody arms off".Amazing how much us kids picked up from the old idiot box and now the kids are getting the same from Tik Toks.

The first episode of The Aunty Jack Show aired on 15 Nov 1972, so definitely not from the 1960's.

@@robertburke5354 Correct I was at the end of Grade two in November 1972 and watched it with my older siblings who were 10 and 7 years older than me. If my parents knew what went on I wouldn't have been allowed to watch it. Most of the kids at school had no clue either.

Norman Gunston is a character created by actor/commedian Gary MacDonald. His verision (send up) of the ultimate dag. He did a lot of interviews pretending to be a serious journalist (ala Borat but a decade earlier). A series filmed in the USA had some interviewee's get rather angry, but others, wortha watch interviewing Frank Zappa and Saly Struthers were great.

If you think this is the best of Norman Gunston you'd be mistaken. Check out some of his interviews with global superstars like McCartney and Jagger. My personal favourite is Sally Strutthers who just cracks up. He is a brilliant interviewer!

Gary McDonald is a genius, way before Ali G. He's also a talented harmonica player and was even invited by Frank Zappa to play with the band at a show in Tasmania. He also has a place in Australian political history. He was one of the first reporters, in full character mimd you, to interview the then newly exed Prime Minister in one of the most infamous moments in Australian broadcast.

We absolutely loved Norman Gunston. His interviews with celebs were legendary..some got him, others were totally bemused. As another comment mentioned, his interviews with Frank Zappa and Sally Struthers are classic. Norman ( Gary) is an excellent harmonica player as evidenced by his "jam" with Frank Zappa.

You really must watch his interviews for your own pleasure at least!!! Some have already been recommended but some of my favourites are 'Guns n Roses', 'Boy George' and 'Muhammad Ali'. I'm sure you'll have a good laugh!!!

I'll always remember his interviews in America. As mentioned check out the Sally Struthers interview, it's hilarious but the one that sticks with me was when he interviewed a guy in prison. This guy was HUGE. 300+lbs. Norman was utterly dwarfed by him. The guy was inside for (if I remember correctly) triple homicide. The guy was mentioning how he wasn't 'that' person anymore because while in prison he had found God. Quick as a whip Norman says "Really!? What was he in for?" For a brief second, maybe even less, it was on a knife edge and then the guy must've reminded himself of how he'd got there and the interview continued. Utterly fearless comedian.

Please please please do not take this man lightly. He is, in reality, a seriously talented musician. Check out I Might Be A Punk But I Love You Baby and His tribute to Kiss. He released a studio album called Nylon Degrees and an amazing live album. He is the only person to ever win a Gold Logie as the character Norman Gunston. He is an Australian legend - check out Mother and Son - a tv comedy series. One last recommendation - check out the interview he did with Sally Struthers.

Norman Gunston was an offshoot of the Aunty Jack Show. Aunty Jack who always threatened to rip your bloody arms off, never to happen because of the boxing gloves she always wore.

Please continue down this rabbit hole as many suggested. NGs popularity was so huge in mid 70s that serious media interviewers just stopped and happily let NG take over, creating the hilarious videos others refer to. He campaigned for himself to be nominated the top tv personality and duly won it. This lead to his campaign of NG 4 GG...he wanted to become governor general, the highest office in the country, but ceremonial only. Legend without comparison.

This was his only failure as a comedian. A disaster, not funny at all, it should never have resurfaced. It means nothing to anyone outside Australia. On the other hand, his interview with Sally Struthers of All In The Family is possibly the most hilarious "interview" ever shown on TV anywhere, ever. I'm convinced she thought he was real. Belly bursting humour.

Gary McDonald with his persona Norman guesting did regular interviews. With some of the world's biggest names . Absalutely hilarious interviews. Like him asking colonal tom parker. Elvis preslies manager .after long winded announcing the colonal to the world as the famous colonal Tom parker. His first question was " so could you finaly tell the world what goes into you 11 herbs and spices. You have to see Mr parkers reaction to beleive how funny this was. 😅😅😅

But also check out the Paul hogan show .it used to be on the abc ( australian broadcast corporation) . Week nights. His freind strop on this show was a genius . But to look at you would beleive the opposite. Hoges ( crocodile dundee ) . Left a job on the Sydney harbour Bridge as a painter . Thats why in dundee he looks calm out on a ledge. He is great with heights. To pursue a career in comedy. He was always the larrikin ( joker).
