9 times and that record still stands today, there's a reason why he was called 'Peter Perfect' and the 'King Of The Mountain'. He always had a relaxed demeanor about him and 1986 doing 2:20s around Bathurst whereas these days they do a 2:02ish I think during the shootout. Mind you, he's driving a H pattern 6 speed manual, none of this sequential gearbox stuff plus the technology 40 years ago. There's been some huge prangs at Bathurst throughout the ages.

There is footage somewhere of his rival, Dick Johnson who drove Ford, decades later getting to drive his old holden after Peter died in his crash. As he does laps of Bathurst he talks about a memory of times past where Dick had a really bad accident up the top of the hill. Brock actually stopped for him, and told him to get in then blasted down the hill as fast as he could to drop off Dick at the pits to grab his second car.

The "Bev" that he waved to in the video is his wife. FYI, he always wore car number 05 (not just 5), despite earning the number 1 for winning the championship time after time. He was a fervent supporter and public figure for the 0.05 blood alcohol limit to combat drunk drivers. He did die at the wheel some years after he retired from full time professional racing. He hit a tree at high speed while competing in a Targa event -- public road and performance car that you can buy at a dealer, not a race car on a race track, or even a public road set up for racing like Bathurst. A helluva shock and sad day for many Aussies. I wasn't much of a racing fan, but I sure loved to watch Brockie. RIP

In the Era that this is from, these cars were essentially Street cars. You had to sell 500 in order to qualify to be able to use them in the race. You will notice that the gear leaver is similar to a stick shift. While I am a Ford fan, I admire what Peter managed to do with the gear that they were driving.

Ahh the 80's, hardly any crash barriers, no Caltex chase... Neat to see that the VK had a racing gearbox with a dog leg 1st gear... First memories of watching racing is watching brocky in the marlboro commodore racing moffet in his RX7 at bathurst... Couldnt comprehend how he was behind him on the track, but beating him in the race... but loved Brocky in the commodore, just like my dad's company car, but with what i thought was HOT written on the rear quarter panel...

The technology has drastically improved (in the cars, the cameras and the broadcasting quality) but Peter could throw anything up that mountain and make a winner of it. After technical difficulties with the car that year he still ended up 5th with an average speed of somewhere around 155kph (96mph). Given this is a race up and down a mountain with 20 separate turns on it, that's pretty crazy. This was also the last year that the full length Conrod straight was used with top speeds over 290 kph (180 mph). Some vehicles indicated around 300 kph (187 mph). Remember these are "production cars" so based off off the shelf cars anyone could buy, and safety was limited to roll cages and race seats. There weren't even airbags at this time. The reason that the "Caltex Chase" was added and the straight shortened after 1986 is that Mike Burgmann died in an accident here in the 1986 James Hardie 1000 that Peter Brock was competing in during your video. RIP Mike. Sadly, "Brocky" also paid the same price decades later, although not at Bathurst.

What is a dead easy turn at 60 mph is 1.somthing G and can be quite sharp and sudden at 120+ if a long corner, or the slightest of twitches if shallow in angle. Driving in a bucket seat, and being the driver, you anticipate the Gs and compensate for them and brace appropriately instead of getting thrown around.

Look at a video of the racing…..it’s not straight line stuff. It’s the toughest track in Australia. 6.2 kilometres of hard driving. The wave to his crew was at 280 to 300 kilometres and hour. (150 to 190 mph).

Did you two notice down that long back straight called Conrod Straight how Brockie had to back off the throttle as the car became airborne over the crests of the hills in order to 1, not over rev and blow the engine and 2, land straight without spearing off the track. Unfortunately driver Mike Burgmann in car 38 didn’t quite get it right and speared off into the base of the Dunlop bridge and died due the engine being forced back through the firewall. For the next year ‘87 a kink was put in and the hill flattened a bit to stop cars getting airborne and slow them down. And Peter with all that going on could still drive one handed and make it look easy. TV flattens the track out. It is significantly steeper than it looks on TV. I’ve been there 8 times. 4 as a spectator and 4 as a flag marshall and it’s still a scary place to race.

The reason he's moving wheel so much is making corrections to keep in a straight line As back wheels are breaking traction and wanting to over take the front one causing the car to spin out These guys are so highly tuned to the minute movement's of the vechiles that they pick it up instinctively Without even thinking and why he's said wave to people in the house he knows beats the boredom Because most is instinctively done but do have to concentrate otherwise you make mistakes Especially on these races that go for 6 hrs and where alot have accidents slight laps in concentration and making adjustments to the vechiles While they burn up fuel get lighter tyres wearing out less grip and brakes running out these are where most of the concentration goes in how the vechiles handling changes as they know the track and every bum in it If you haven't done it look up Greg Murphy lap of the gods it's the fastest lap around their back then Also race cam was invented in Australia 🇦🇺 motor sport for Bathurst and now in every motor sport Also Aussie's invented the wi fi and the word selfie Cheers guys 🦘🇦🇺👍

The live car racing coverage for Australian SuperCars ís so superior to anything from NASCAR and other world competitions. As you can see way back in the 1980's they had cameras on the cars showing the road in front , talking to the drivers live. Yet NASCAR is still so inferior and not at all exciting to watch on TV due to poor camera work. They only show stationary cameras at one point on the track and have hundreds on advertisements an hour. No thanks
