Split Enz Six Months In A Leaky Boat live 06
• Split Enz Six Months ...
The Enz- Melbourne 2006- "Pioneer-Six Months.." live.
Lyrics
When I was a young boy
I wanted to sail around the world
That's the life for me
Living on the sea
Spirit of a sailor
Circumnavigates the globe
The lust of a pioneer
Will acknowledge no frontier
I remember you by, thunderclap in the sky
Lightning flash, tempers flare
'Round the horn if you dare
I just spent six months in a leaky boat
Lucky just to keep afloat
Aotearoa
Rugged individual
Glisten like a pearl
At the bottom of the world
The tyranny of distance
Didn't stop the cavalier
So why should it stop me
I'll conquer and stay free
Ah, c'mon all you lads
Let's forget and forgive
There's a world to explore
Tales to tell back on shore
I just spent six months in a leaky boat
Six months in a leaky boat
Ship-wrecked love can be cruel
Don't be fooled by her kind
There's a wind in my sails
Will protect and prevail
I just spent six months in a leaky boat
Nothing to it leaky boat

Most of us New Zealanders know most of the words to almost every Enz song, part of our DNA 😁😁😁 The band used to rehearse at my uncle's house in Auckland 😊

Eddie Rayner on keyboards and piano is an absolute genius. The instrumental he plays before Leaky Boat is called “Pioneer.” He wrote music and rearranged a large number of Split Enz songs for live performances and two albums under ENZSO (Split Enz with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra) some amazing music with a huge mix of New Zealand artists singing lead on classic Enz tracks. I was lucky to see the concert series live in Melbourne in 1997 I think it was. Just amazing.

This song was released around the time of the Falklands war, and it was banned on the BBC, as they thought it was a commentary on the war, but it wasn't! It was written by Tim Finn, and it is really about a six month bout of depression he went through.

it was pathetic how the british government constantly over stepped with banning pop songs - i remember they were good at doing that for innocuous reasons that i found ridiculous - this was about brainwashing the public in supporting that stupid falklands war - every other country thought it was stupid so the british govt had to make sure their citizens blindly supported that stupid war so banning innocous songs and opposite opinions was the way to go

I just discovered your reactions. I'm so glad you discovered Split Enz and "Six Months in a Leaky Boat" in particular. This is my all-time favorite song. I even have it in my will to have it played at my funeral someday in hopes it will make people smile. This song came out when I was in college and it reminded me that growing up would probably be a waste of time. So I decided then to stop trying to do that, and instead, made a career out of fantasy publishing. Between this song, and the book, Peter Pan, I'm covered. Glad you both liked this magical song. Andf this live version is my favorite.

Like all good art - it's about two things at once. Lots of colonists travelled to Aoteoroa (New Zealand) in leaky boats. The literal meaning Tim Finn's bout of depression the allegory. They're very clever song writers. The two brothers together are an unmistakable sound.

I'm just thrilled that you've been reacting to my favorite band in the world Crowded House, and one of my top 10 in Split Enz. The Enz has that theatrical sound and vision within their shows that make them amazing. Brothers Neil and Tim are 2 of the greatest singers and composers ever. Eddie Rayner is a Keyboard genious also. Greetings from Mexico City.

So glad you were introduced to the Split Enz. I've been a fan of the Finn brothers since they first came out and was saddened when they broke up. I of course became a fan of Neil Finn and Crowded House and followed Tim Finn's solo work. In 1992 I got to go to a Crowded House concert where they played about half a dozen Crowded House songs when Neil Finn announced that they had a special guest and brought his brother on stage, breaking out with "Six Months in a Leaky Boat". The crowd went nuts with many people holding up Split Enz album covers. The rest of the set was Split Enz.

the subtlety of the intro piece is that its a direct preview of the chord and melody of the song proper. first time listeners wouldnt pick on up on it, but after you've heard it once or twice, the intro becomes even more powerful.

Plus for all of us New Zealanders this song has a special meaning. It's like an anthem of our history as well as a metaphore for Tim's own personal struggle. It expresses that pioneering spirit of people braving the wild pacific ocean to sail here from Europe and how they arrived in an untamed, and not so welcoming land at the bottom of the world to literally build a new way of life for themselves. That beautiful intro really puts you out in the ocean with them....we are Oceania.

Six months in a leaky boat was written about Captain Cook's voyage sailing from England to the great unknown (Australia and New Zealand) back in the 1770's. Can you imagine spending six months in a tall ship sailing into the great unknown in a big wooden boat? That little piece at the start with the piano is called Pioneer which leads into Six months in a leaky boat on their 1982 album Time and Tide.

It is more about the journey to Aotearoa, hence it being in the song. They could get here in six months using the old trade route currents of the sailing ship days, so long as Aotearoa is your only destination. @@iankearns774
