This type of "back and forth," "misunderstanding," and "play on words" dialog was probably played in some form, on ancient Greek Theater stages. TBS, The writing of this skit is awesome! The audio performance alone, is impeccable. This act was a huge radio media act before it ventured into film and TV. Add in the visual performance and you have the stage act that they built their careers on. The accelerated cadence of the performance is designed to heighten your frustrated empathy. It is without a doubt a brilliant masterpiece, performed masterfully!

Skit here was done ca 1953 on their TV show, but was in existence at least in the early 1930's in a shorter form. I got them on radio in the late 1930's and thus responsible for their success in radio and movies and then TV.

So many Vaudeville acts made their way to television. Abbott and Costello were a comedy team years before television. They did this skit on stage hundreds of times. When radio became a thing, many acts would do shows on radio and families would tune in and when television came around, others like Burns and Allen, Lucille Ball aka I love Lucy, Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Lewis and Martin all had their own shows. They could've done this bit in their sleep. You said it, their timing and delivery is what set them apart.

They started out on stage and radio (which was live, of course), so their timing was perfected by performing their routines over and over with live audiences. By the time this recording was made, they’d probably done it a thousand times. So when Bud tells the crowd they don’t want to hear that old thing, he kinda really meant it. They went on to make many movies through the 40s and 50s. They had a weekly radio show and later a TV show.

How do they keep all of this straight? Very clever and hilarious! I was introduced to Abbott and Costello's Who's On First" through my father in 1972, I was 7. In 1952 when this came out my dad was 15, loved it, and shared it with me when I was 7, I loved it, although they are very fast you had to be very sharp and fast! Great comedy, still holds up today!

This particular sketch is from the Abbott & Cosello Show in 1951. They first performed it in 1936, and in that 15 year period it was their most requested routine, especially by the troops during WWII when they travelled with the USO.

I'm glad my father showed me this, and other's like: Steve Allen, Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner, Rodney Dangerfield(hilariouswould be cancelled today), Don Rickles (hilarious, would be canceled today), Red Foxx), Jackie Mason, Bob Newhart(hilarious, one of my absolute favorites, the Carol Burnette show(especially Tim Conway and Harvey Koreman), Flip Wilson(Geraldine "Suckuh".), Steve Martin(Wild and Crazy Guy, and Let's Get Small, and the dance scene he did with Gilda Radner(I miss her deeply)of course the original SNL cast: John Bilushi, Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Chevi Chase, Gilda Radner(Judy Miller and Rosesann Rosanna Danna both hilarious characters, Jane Curtain, Lorraine Newman, and Garrett Morris, Great comedy from the 50's, 60's, and 70's! Don Rickles, Rodney Dangerfield, Bob Newhart, and Tim Conway(it was hilarious watching him making people break character 🤣 were my absolute favorites), and of course, Leslie Nielsen first a serious actor, but he's the King of being serious but being hilarious at the same time(Airplane and the Naked Gun series!)

Abbott and Costello got their start on the old vaudeville circuit in the mid 30s, where comedy duos were a common act. These duos often consisted of a 'straight man', Abbott in this case, who set up the funny man with the dialog. The timing is absolutely impeccable. I've loved them and this bit especially since I was a kid. A LONG time ago. They had megasuccess during the 40s in movies, being among the highest paid entertainers of the WW II era, and later in TV.

By Height, Abbott is the tall one, Costello is the shorter one. By Intelligence, (character intelligence, of course) Abbott is the smarter one, Costello is always having stuff explained to him. Believe it or not, that is how some people actually identify them. Plus, they were MASTERS at their jobs. (IMO)

Great Reaction.... To this Classic Clean Comedy..... One Reason this routine flows so well for them is this recording is from their TV show around 1953, and they first did this on the "Kate Smith Radio Show" around 1936, so they had been performing this routine for approx 17 years when this was recorded.... If my memory is correct..... A version of this is also in their 1945 movie "Naughty Nineties".....

this skit was a costello and abbott original and old they were performing this on radio. tv wasnt around yet. it's a error on alot of things. some say it is at the hall of fame. itself but is also stated that its in the museum.

We still reference this skit quite often, if one of the kids ever says the word who or what or I don't know for some reason , we always answer with the appropriate A & C answer lol. Eg if they say "I don't know" I answer "he's on 3rd", I always get the Look and " Grandma, stop it" 😂

7 x 13 = 28, also a great skit. Abbott and Costello were superstars in comedy in the 30's, 40's and early 50's. They started on stage in burlesque and vaudeville shows, did radio then films - close to forty of them, and had one of the early television shows. They were the highest-paid entertainers in the world during the Second World War.

In the 40s before they started movies they were hired to do a weekly radio show and in their contract it was written that they had to preform the baseball routine once a month. They have many more routines, you should look at the dice routine.

“Who's on First?" is descended from minstrel and turn-of-the-century wordplay sketches. One of the most famous was developed by Weber and Fields and called "I Work On Watt Street."Other examples include "The Baker Scene" (the comedian "loafs" at a bakery located on Watt Street) and "Who Dyed" (the business owner is named "Who"). In the 1930 movie Cracked Nuts, comedians Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey examine a map of a mythical kingdom with dialogue like this: "What is next to Which." "What is the name of the town next to Which?" "Yes." In British music halls, comedian Will Hay performed a routine in the early 1930s (and possibly earlier) as a schoolmaster interviewing a schoolboy named Howe, who came from Ware, but now lives in Wye. By the early 1930s, a "Baseball Routine" had become a standard bit in burlesque in the United States. Abbott's wife recalled him performing the routine with another comedian before teaming with Costello.

Lou Costello in real life was a sweetheart of a man. He Always put family first, no matter what! He was generous and kind. He lost a son before he was one year old and it nearly broke him. It is my understanding that His partner Bud Abbott had epilepsy and they had to work around that a lot, especially when they made movies. These guys were very highly respected in the industry

Good point, it takes to people to do the routine. One person can't all it as a joke. Not just Timon & Pumba, but every "short dumb guy" vs. "tall smarter guy" in the next 100 years was based off of them.

They did this bit for twenty years on the burlesque circuit and in radio and movies before this recording was even made. They could do it in their sleep. The better you know it, the more you can see them covering for each other when one almost says something out of sequence. There are times here when Lou starts to gild the lily and no one cares because the audience knows the bit by heart, too!
