I feel about this fight the same way I do about Leonard vs Hagler. Every time I watch it, I change my opinion. I remember watching the fight FIVE times, two times I had it for Ward, two times for Kovalev and in the end a draw. I had it razor sharp. This will be remembered years from now as one of the all time great fights.

I saw this fight live at the T-Mobile and ward did not win this fight. Out of the first 6 rounds I gave it to kovalev 5-1 to ward. There is no way ward won the next 6 following rounds. But when I saw the fight again on KZfaq it looked completely different. Again ward did not win this fight

I'm with you on this fight. I felt that way for a while anyway. Many fans don't understand one significant thing about judging these fights though. As fans we get to see all camera angles, slow motion, rewind and any other special effect that we can utilize when re-watching a fight. The judges only sit at one side of the ring and have to decide what's going on and to be perfectly honest, we can only discredit judging but so much. Most of us fans have not been trained to judge, nor do we have the experience that any of these judges have. When we rewatch fights yes we may get a more accurate decision, but we still have to have some type of understanding for the lack of visuals the judges are provided, when they're asked to score these fights. Great stuff ShowBizz 👊👊💯

I made sure not to include kidney punches, punches to the hips, punches below the navel/belt, rabbit punches, and pitter-patter punches in the clinch when the Ref said break - as all these tactics are either illegal / outside proper punch technique. The unsung hero for Ward was that harpoon jab to the body that he threw from Round 1 - interestingly, this is a punch that was also considered one of Kovalev's most dangerous weapons in the past....but was absent this fight. Also, I would consider Kovalev's peak years to be somewhere between the Cleverly - Pascal 2 fights. If you study Kov's energy output carefully, he was already gassing late in the Isaac Chilemba fight. Not saying that Kov wasn't dangerous for the first 6 rounds here, but Ward himself said he felt Kov's energy start to fade late in this fight. Ward's jab to the body and pseudo wrestling helped, but Kov's output would have dropped on its own anyway. Kovalev's agility and energy in his legs were already on the decline...but this was the last shadows of the Krusher. Ward recognized what everyone knew for years about Kovalev - he's weak to the body. There were reports of a prime GGG hurting and dropping Kovalev to the body in sparring sessions many years prior.
