Some strive for a Nobel Prize, others for Olympic Gold medals, others perhaps for Oscars; but no other prize in history as attracted as many earnestly labouring contenders as The Golden Turd Of Kathmandu. Lemme tell you, winning this award takes some doing - I mean look at the competition, right? But you're on target for it. Competition however is fierce and you might yet lose - unlikely but possible. The one thing that everybody seems to forget is that being colonised by the British had one major advantage especially for countries within Africa they where then a lot less likely to be attacked and have their people forced and sold into the then still very active Arab slave trade as the Arab countries didn't want the trouble it would bring so although not an ideal thing being ruled or governed by another nation and living by there rules it was better than living in chattel slavery in another country

Finest mongrel nation ever. From Romans, Saxons, Vikings, Normans, Lombard's, Huguenots, Flemish, Jews and the Commonwealth. From Magna Carta, English Common Law, the 1688 Bill of Rights, Britain is the source of most of the Western worlds ideas of freedom and liberty and democracy. The origin and source of places like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, even the USA, Hong Kong and Singapore are two far eastern legacies of the "evil empire". The Commonwealth and even the greatest democratic nation in the world, India. The abolition of slavery - against immense internal and global resistance. Refusing to accept Hitler's peace, and preservation of the empire, overtures after the fall of France - that is interesting "what if" when you look into it. Not too shabby. As Empires go, not a bad track record at all.

Actually, the German company, Heinkel, had a jet engine working in a plane just as WW2 was about to start. Unfortunately for them, but fortunately for the rest of the world, the German government saw no future in it and it never went into production. Also, it was an axial flow type which challenged the metallurgy of Germany at that time and even later in the war. The British jet engine was ready later, was adequate and reliable at the time, and powered the Gloster Meteor plane but, over time, the axial flow engine triumphed.

The hovercraft and police service I'll agree were British ideas. So was the first national intelligence (spy) service.

"Cat's Eyes" are those small refelctors on roads which shine when a car headlight illumintes them. They are now found all over the world on most roads. Their design is such that the light from the headlight is refelected over a wide angle so no metter where you are the light is seen by your eyes. The ingenuity is that there's a little depression in front of the reflectors and a brush. The bump part is on a spring. Water collects in the depression and when the bump is depressed by a car tyre it is pushed down, and the collected water together with the brushes cleans the front of the reflector so they don't need regular cleaning. A genious invention!

Hi, A cat's eye reflector, also called a road stud, is a raised marker on a road that helps drivers see the lane markings and edges of the road, especially at night or in low-visibility conditions. They are called cat's eyes because their reflective properties resemble a cat's eye reflecting light. Here's a breakdown of how they work: Retroreflection: The key component is a special material that reflects light directly back to its source. This means a driver's headlights hit the reflector and bounce right back towards the driver, making the stud appear very bright. Construction: The reflective bit is usually encased in a dome-shaped, tough plastic housing with a flexible rubber base. This allows them to flex when driven over and also helps keep the reflective surface clean. Cat's eye reflectors are very important for road safety, particularly when it's dark or foggy. They help drivers stay in their lane and avoid collisions.

There is no doubt that Britain did some awful things in the countries we colonised but what was the rest of the world doing at the same time? Exactly the same, they conquered territory for financial gain. The main reason Britain was so successful at empire building wasn't because of brute force. It was because the countries would rather have Britain helping than the alternatives. Like it or not the world would be a much harsher, more dangerous place, lives would be much harder for the vast majority of people and life expectancy would be much lower than it is now. Simply put life is better for the majority of people now because of Britain.

Studies have shown about 40% of the world's inventions, innovations and scientific discoveries are British or hada major British input. So why has Britain led the world in scinetific and technologic advances? 1) The industrial revolution started here which gave us a massive headstart. In particular Jethro Tull's seed drill which freed up much of the population from a life of agricultural drudgery to do other things. Like a life of drudgery in the mills and factories.🤔😐 2) Britain was on of the first countries to have compulsory education and a high level of literacy. 3) Britain has some of the worlds oldest and best universities, especially Oxford & Cambridge that have long attracted many of the best minds in the world. 4) A culture that encourages new ideas and innovation and passed knowledge on rather than keeping it secret. In particular getting rid of the catholic church which frowned on anything which challenged their teachings. Burning people at the stake for heresey tends to stifle innovative thinking for some reason.🔥🔥🔥😱😱😱 5) Our great scientists and engineers are celebrated and taught about in our schools which inspires new generations. Other inventions and discoveries he missed out: Submarines, hovercraft, aircraft carriers, electric motors, chocolate bars, tooth brushes, thermos flasks, water proof clothing, IVF, cloning,, finger printing, photography, TV, radio, the telegraph, the world wide web, etc, etc.

@@tomnicholson2115 The lathe was French, submarine was Dutch, chocolate bar too I believe, the seed drill was a minor contribution to the agricultural revolution that was copied from the Dutch, religious tolerance and freedom of print was brought to Britain by the Dutch, by force. Quite a lot of the achievements came out of the British academic institutions where the inventors had the time and resources to develop ideas. The Universities had the funding both from government and industry to allow developers to utilise as much time as needed and to draw from multiple other specialists to combine their expertise into one invention that gets attributed to the project leader. Even recently Oxford university was one of the front runners in developing the Covid vaccine utilising thousands of scientists from around the country and abroad.

The Germans did have a jet fighter in WW2 but they had stolen the plans of the jet engine from Frank Whittle, and Nazi Germany were the first to have a jet engine fighter but us British also had a Jet fighter near the end of WW2 but it was also much more superior to the Nazi German fighter in every way. 💂‍♂️💂‍♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Personally I think we contributed more than the bad bits. I do however think what we should not have given to Africa was machine guns Tanks and fighter planes. Not just us but other countries outside of Africa. All the positive stuff like medicine and railways and things like that yes definitely but the ability to kill thousands I think we should have withheld and let Africa develop them themselves over time. What do you think ?? Great video by the way 👍

The social way of life established within Britain is being currently recognised as having good Christian values, which has allowed to freedom of speech movement and thought.
