👉👉Don't get confused! They are talking about the "recording" of the songs NOT the recording of the "videos"!! Evergreen is the name of the Album! These are just "some" of the songs from that album! They NORMALLY record the songs separately at different times and the engineer puts them together! THIS TIME they all got together to record the songs due to time constraints! RECORDING THE VIDEOS is a different process! And other than the music videos they recorded during "lockdown" where they all stayed in their homes, they are ALWAYS together and glamed up for the MUSIC VIDEOS! this you just watched is just tiny glimpse of the process of recording/arranging the songs for the album!!

I like how in "River" Mitch says to Scott we should switch parts on this spot and he says yeah ok. Such collaboration also bouncing ideas off each other and getting input from Matt and Kevin who aren't singing that part. Also when they listen to "The Prayer" Kirstie is so excited at the end says that's so good they are all so excited with the end result. They are so supportive of each other yet open to constructive criticism. Work as a unit. What a team. 💜

The entire "Evergreen" album is amazing. You should definitely listen to it and watch the available videos of the songs from the album.

I've worked in choirs and with a singing group...and yes...this is how they work, how much they work and how they'll repeat a phrase or set of notes over and over until they have it exactly as the choir master or group leader wants it. It's a bit tedious, but you do it because you want the choir or group to sound their best and for yourself to be your best. It's worth it in the end to see the faces of those who hear your songs and their joy and appreciation of the music.

I just need to say that I have watched hundreds of reaction to PTX. You are the best. You understand they are more than voices. They are cooperative production by people who care about and respect each other. And on top of that, they love what they do. And you seem to understand that all of that together makes them great. So often reviews are "oh what fabulous voices" and of course that is true but they are so much more than that. Thank you for doing this for all of us Pentataholics to enjoy.

Ben Bram, at the piano, is their co-arranger. They met him 11 years ago. Scott met him in college before "The Sing Off". You are right...they are VERY HUMBLE! They are like best friends, but they don't have to live together. I'm sure that helps. When Matt suggested they make that part "breathier and quieter", which the band liked, just remember, he graduated from a music college. The others have much less music training past the first year of college. The director of this video, Ben Hausdorff, is Kirstin's boyfriend. He and Kirstin have been living together for years. ANNNNNDDDDD. She is pregnant! Woo hooo!!!

Kevin also had a lot of formal music training/education; most of his life he studied music and began his college career at Yale as a music major. I had no idea how extensive his experience in music was until I read his Wikipedia page. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Olusola
@PtxXtp

@@susanb4213 I think what they’re saying is that Matt is the only one who attended a music college and has a degree in music. He graduated from Berkeley college of music. While Kevin started as a music major he quickly switched to studying medicine and finished all his classes to become pre-med before going to study in china and then joining the sing off.

If they're still available, the videos from the special they did on the BYU t.v. shows a good number of these songs. Plus, if you can find a live version of I Saw Three Ships from their tour, that would be fun to watch to see how they directed the audience to follow along. I was in Kirstie's group, but wished I'd been in Kevin's. He had the most fun part.

And that's just for a recording. When doing a life version of a song, that has percussions, beatboxing and Kevin singing, it can even be more complicated to coordinate, because who is beatboxing while Kevin is singing? It amazes me how versatile they are and how much they can fill in or cover for each other.

Putting breath onto the end means to soften up what is being said and easing out of it. It allows it to be softer in sound . With her flipping up (going up several notes in close succession) it helps to ease that transition for her as well to do that. It also allows the other 2 to keep the balance with what they are singing. So with all 3 it works to maintain that harmony even more

You should also watch “On My Way Home”. It is a full length feature following their 2015(?) tour, when they really started playing bigger venues. It will give you an even bigger appreciation for their work ethic and how well they get along. During the tour they were also recording their parts for an upcoming album in a mini recording booth on the tour bus, so they hardly had any down time. Avi talks about this and how hard it is for him personally to not to be able to see family (mom was having cancer treatments at the time, I believe) or friends. Kinda foreshadowing his reasons for leaving at the beginning of 2017 😢 This is toward the end of the video and leads into their performance of Standing By,, a favorite of mine, and all the more poignant for Avi’s commentary. It is available for rental or purchase on You Tube. It’s probably too long for you to do a reaction, but I do think you, as a fellow Pentaholic, would appreciate it! Love your reactions, as I’ve said in a previous comment!

They didn't do videos for all of these. There are a lot of live TV versions instead, most easy to find on KZfaq. Kirstie having a kid will probably stop their touring for three or four years, but I wonder if they'll double down on albums instead. Or TV specials (it's a shame they seem to have parted ways with NBC though--last year they had to use a Mormon streaming service, and none of them are Mormon, instead!) The collaborative process here with them all together here seems so much better than separate recording. It puts THEM more in charge rather than the producer, even though their producer is one of the best in existence. This is how they arranged things when they were on The Sing-Off. And I think we all know how well that worked out.
