Hi. That is a dobro. Sometimes also called a resonator guitar. Steel guitar is set up like a table that you sit at, and has a slightly more complicated string set up. You are right though they both sound amazing.

Emmett is playing a DoBro, a steel guitar with a metal resonator. It was produced by the Dopyera brothers, I believe in the 1920's, hence the name. DoBro seems to be generic for steel guitars with a resonator. Karen is doing a showboat dance indicating the kids should stop showboating and wrap it up, the cut they have is fine.

I'm so sorry, KZfaq did not notify me of this video, so I didn't thank you, which now i am! I've listened to "The Boy Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn" by Dan Tyminski, and yes, I can see the similarities! While I like both Irish and Country music, they're not my usual songs to listen to (okay maybe The Corrs and Taylor Swift with their Pop style being a huge exception :D), but Bluegrass definitely touches my heart with its upbeat feel. Thanks for your reactions! I was impressed that you really like this kind of music.

Omg "The Boy Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn" is one of my all time most favourite songs, and Dan Tyminski is a HUGE vocal inspiration to me as well as Alison Krauss. That's a great suggestion!

My suggestions: When You Say Nothing At All, Katie (fiddle) sings the lead. And any of Katie's originals, California or What'll I do, etc. Emmett on dobro, his original, Moments. Matt (guitar) one of John Denver's songs, Back Home Again or Georg Strait, Amarillo By Morning.. Ellen (banjo) sings the famous Jolene and Landslide is my fav. Julianne, the youngest sibling, (mandolin) No Roots or Scientist cover and Cranberries cover, Wayfaring Stranger. She also has a beautiful original titled, May Baby. Mom, Karen, is on the bass.
