I've run a 9p grid in my own lab for years, and the sheer elegance of the system design can not be understated. The effect of extreme resource multiplexing factors the amount of code that a user needs to write down by orders of magnitude. (rio, the windowing system, for example, is a little over 5,500 lines long, in total.)

Doesn't using a distributed system slow things down especially over the Internet?

Only if you have a slow internet. But that's not the point here. The point here is the user shouldn't be aware whether the resource is on the machine you are working on or else where, because machine is only an interface to the computing world, where the compute happens is not a concern. This is just my understanding.
