Tim, I am new to this and I may be barking up the wrong tree because I am seeing old posts. Let's see if I can make a long story short: I used to be fairly 'accomplished' despite the fact that I never practiced and only pursued piano (plus flute, a bit of guitar, etc.) to please my parents (originally) from kindergarten until about 18 yrs old. Ultimately, I could pull off a decent Rachmaninoff, various significant Beethoven pieces, etc. My piano teacher finally gave up on me, and instead of springing recital pieces within weeks where I was supposed to memorize same (full church where nobody allowed to leave) I was the unfortunate exception to the rule, whereby he allowed me to bring the sheet music because I never practiced. It would take me 6 months to prepare for let's say, the 'Bells of Moscow' or Pathetique, and only my sense of self-preservation (ego) made me prepare more as the D-day approved each June. I am now 57 (stopped playing music when I was 18), but bought this bad ass Yamaha CP88 recently for an apartment (while real house being renovated and my vintage upright in storage - not like I played it over last decades anyway); and I realized I can barely do Moonlight Sonata!! WTF happened to me? Now, I am a wannabe reformed loser (yes top of my class academically and same in grad school, yet party girl too back then, living with a foot in each realm)! I have never been so humbled in my life when trying to play recently. I wasn't good, but I wasn't bad either. Now, I have to figure out bass clef notes that feel so foreign (I speak multiple languages - but these notes blow my mind!!). Do you have a way for old dogs like me to resume in an optimal way? I run 2 businesses and unfortunately became the sole caregiver to a beloved spouse of 35 years - (he suffered an accident 5 years ago). For some reason, this is what I **really** want to do (I thank my parents every day for the blessing of music study). But my impatience shows me i have to start all over in a methodical way. Sorry for the tome here, but I suspect there are other peeps like me who could benefit from such therapy after pretty severe trauma - or let's say people who are dealing with hard-core adversity, whose neuropathways are digging deeper negative holes. That is, they (we) need to break out of a persistent fight or flight syndrome. I truly believe musical therapy (not just rocking out as I do routinely, be it Doc Watson or Audioslave) could be one approach. As you can tell, I feel strongly compelled to dip my toe back in the water, but wonder if it is a matter of just starting all over again - which would not give me much gratification. You don’t even have to respond - I just found your tips interesting because i never learned any tricks or certain ways of thinking about it. Blah, blah, blah. I am about to delete this - and if I dont send now I will wuss out- because I am quite sure the answer is not easy. Keep doing your cool thing dude. Thanks! :) Lynn

Identifying them by sight is what I was having trouble with. I am trying to read sheet music for the first time today, and I ran into the problem that each key isn't assigned to just one finger like it is on the keyboard, so clearly, labeling the spaces ABCDEFG doesn't help at all when actually trying to play. I could memorize which fingers to use for which letter for one song, but then it doesn't work for the next song. Then I thought I'll just remember where my thumb is for each song and go from there based on the spacing, then I realized that I have to count the spacing. I can't just see how far apart they are just by looking. So I'm going to try memorizing what the different spacings are like you suggest.

Try to practice scales and keep the interval relations of the scale degrees in mind so that you can apply the same logic from the key of C major to the other keys.

@JS45678
@JS45678 2 жыл бұрын
The m & p represent volume levels to play those sections at (otherwise known as dynamics). I also know that recognizing intervals is critically important bc when you have to keep your eyes fixated on the sheet music, you are going to have to know how far to stretch fingers when covering large spaces between notes without looking down constantly (Bach is notorious in my beginner book for spacing notes out very far and oddly).
@matvey_dub3555
@matvey_dub3555 2 жыл бұрын
It actually means the type of the interval. m's are minor intervals, P's are perfect intervals, M's are major intervals, A's are augmented intervals and d's are diminished intervals. You should search and learn about minor and major intervals so you'll understand better.

Thanks for for he tutorial, I can see you put some and effort into it. Unfortunately, it won't work for most learners since are.you are just áskng them to follow the same cofusing, abstract points on page. My suggestion is to break the mold, and teach a more practical, and simplified technique, by using CHORD SHAPES the way the guitar does. Basically teach the CAGED system of playing the same pattern of chords anywhere on the keyboard. Teach the D in open position, then move it up and down the board, showing how the same finger shape can be reused for different triads. In the beginning stay away from variations (D over GM7). The basics would be a emphasizing the recurring shapes, and use them as musical notation, versus the confusing system we have know. O

An very informative video. This would be a great jumping off point to talk about Figured Bass. I had no idea what it was but it's just a way to notate chords from the bass clef, a very Baroque practice. But hey, Bach really Roques. A root position chord is 5/3, but if there is no notation it's just listed as the chord. This meands there is a fifth and a third, since Tim has taught us all about intervals. A first inversion is noted 6/3, since they liked to note the larger interval on top. This means that the root is a sixth above the note, which is the third in the bass. Since they liked shorthand and didn't want to list everything, this would just have a prefix 6. A second inversion chord is listed 6/4, since the lowest note is the fifth, the root is found a fourth above (up a fifth, down a fourth) and the third is a sixth above. Since they wanted no confusion, they always list this as a 6/4. There are also notations for seventh chords, with the root position being simply a 7. I'm not going to give the other 3 inversions since I want to master my triads before moving on. Tim, your channel reaches a large audience and this would be a good topic for a future video. I'm practicing Bach chorals with two voices. They're difficult, but beautiful.

As a professional musician and educator for over 30 years. I realized years back the traditional notation system is so flawed. It takes years to be a master sight reader. I researched many other music notation systems some were others were bad. So I reinvented the traditional way where note identification is so simple it makes the "every good boy does fine" system reveals this good boy is really punk laughing at your ass because you can't figure what line or space the stupid note is on. More to come. Lol

It's just the same thing you'd play but a half step lower or higher. If there's no key signature, and you start on a G, and you see the next note is third up from that and has a flat sign, then you know that it's going to be the note right below what a third after a G usually is. If you're having trouble with this, then it's just a matter of practicing so that you become familiar with those kinds of alterations.
