The hooter symbolizes a ghost whistle, one that screeches like a lost soul in the darkness of being scrapped. 2102 along with NW 1218 have the best hooters, either freight or ghostly, at least in my opinion.
@steamgent45922 жыл бұрын
Thats 2102s original Reading Hooter the one she carried in service till the Rambles. She's carried it the whole time Andy's had her as well. It's never come off for another whistle under his ownership. It's the passenger whistle they swap around.

@steamgent45922 жыл бұрын
To deep for British steam.
@lukejohnson30482 жыл бұрын
@@steamgent4592 on that note, why are British whistles so high pitched and quiet.
@steamgent45922 жыл бұрын
@@lukejohnson3048 the quiet is due to the fact that they are small. Loudness is created by the diameter (almost all American RR whistles are 6 inches in diameter British are like 2 -3 inches) of the whistle and pitches or notes the length of each chamber. The Brits were extremely frugal when it came to whistles. Also their loading gauge is so tight there isn't room for a large whistle. It would get in the way or get lopped off even by a bridge. Many a mainline loco over their has lost its stack hitting bridges when they re-ballasted the line and the track was raised a bit. So several have recast stacks as a result. They only blow 2 quick toots on the whistle at a crossing long before you see it. Every crossing has gates, rail lines are fenced and just touch Railway property with a toe and you will probably go to prison. They take trespassing seriously. So they didn't need whistles like ours. Get hit by a train in Europe and you'll get a bill from the railway for delays and damages and get sued not like here.
