We can't teach anything in isolation, not even something as seemingly straightforward as vocabulary. Always, the learner is building upon what the learner already knows (pre-existing knowledge) and putting that into context.
By asking them to sort things out, we're helping them learn to categorize the knowledge they already have. Researchers call this developing a sense of gist.
So have fun playing sorting games and don't worry about sorting only the way it makes sense to you to sort. The child may sort it differently and that is no problem at all.
