2023 marks 40 years since the Blue Mountain & Reading Railroad, now the Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad Company, started operations. Since 1983, the Reading & Northern has become a prominent freight business and tourist passenger railroad, serving over 6 counties in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Today, Reading & Northern is always finding new ways to expand their business and is currently one of Pennsylvania's largest operating railroads.
On Sunday August 13, 2023, which was also Andy Muller's birthday, former Reading T-1 4-8-4 no. 2102 was in charge of train OSJT, an "Iron Horse Rambles" round trip excursion running between Reading Outer Station and Jim Thorpe. 2102 was decorated in an immaculate Rambles inspired scheme and is still equipped with a single-chime Reading hooter whistle along with a Reading 6-chime.
At the Jim Thorpe Junction Wye, 2102 and OSJT met JTPI, a tourist train running between Jim Thorpe and RBMN's new station in Pittston. 2102 would meet another train when it approached Port Clinton on the return trip to Reading Outer Station. NRFF with three EMD Locomotives would be waiting for the 2102 to finish its station stop before proceeding northbound.
RBMN 2102 History:
2102 was originally built as I10sa 2-8-0 no. 2044 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, PA in 1923. 2044 would be tasked with hauling freight trains throughout the Reading system. During World War II, the Reading Company needed stronger longer locomotives to handle all the wartime freight. Due to wartime restrictions, the railroad could not build a brand-new locomotive class from scratch, however, a loophole in the restrictions allowed them to rebuild 30 of their 45 I10sa 2-8-0s into T-1 4-8-4 locomotives. 2044 was rebuilt in 1945 at the Reading shops and would be renumbered to 2102.
Following its rebuild, 2102 operated freight trains until the late 1950s when it was placed into storage, but then was temporarily brought back into service in 1962 for the Reading Company's "Iron Horse Rambles". Following the conclusion of these excursions in 1964, 2102 was retired from service.
After a lengthy excursion mainline career from 1966-1984, 2102 was sold to Andrew Muller for use on his Blue Mountain & Reading Railroad. 2102 operated on the BM&R from 1985-1991. In early 2016, Reading & Northern announced that 2102 would be restored to operational condition, with her first official test run completed on April 6, 2022.

Simply amazing to see 2102 thrive once again. Hopefully 2100 will be back up in running in the near future and maybe even double head an Iron Horse Ramble sometime!

Trains are really unpredictable. Even in the middle of a forest two rails can appear out of nowhere, and a 1.5-mile fully loaded coal drag, heading east out of the low-sulfur mines of the PRB, will be right on your butt the next moment. I was doing laundry in my basement, and I tripped over a metal bar that wasn't there the moment before. I looked down: "Rail? WTF?" and then I saw concrete sleepers underneath and heard the rumbling. Deafening railroad horn. I dumped my wife's pants, unfolded, and dove behind the water heater. It was a double-stacked Z train, headed east towards the fast single track of the BNSF Emporia Sub (Flint Hills). Majestic as hell: 75 mph, 6 units, distributed power: 4 ES44DC's pulling, and 2 Dash-9's pushing, all in run 8. Whole house smelled like diesel for a couple of hours! Fact is, there is no way to discern which path a train will take, so you really have to be watchful. If only there were some way of knowing the routes trains travel; maybe some sort of marks on the ground, like twin iron bars running along the paths trains take. You could look for trains when you encounter the iron bars on the ground, and avoid these sorts of collisions. But such a measure would be extremely expensive. And how would one enforce a rule keeping the trains on those paths? A big hole in homeland security is railway engineer screening and hijacking prevention. There is nothing to stop a rogue engineer, or a terrorist, from driving a train into the Pentagon, the White House or the Statue of Liberty, and our government has done nothing to prevent it. Great video by the way :)

Wow, very awesome that it’s been 40 years since the the original Reading Railroad Iron Horse rambles took place (correct me if I’m wrong) I am just so happy and glad that T1 number 2102 is back in service hopefully somewhere along the way, I will have an opportunity to come up to Pennsylvania to see her in person

@@HarryWarren1223 wow that’s very cool but all in all I’m glad that 2102 is back in service sister engine 2100 will follow although the American steam preservation plans to convert her to burn oil the last time that was done it was not very successful. It did not raise very much pressure. The T1 locomotives were designed to burn anthracite coal common in Pennsylvania I assume anthracite coal burns a little bit hotter than most North American coals will just wait and see is the restoration continues

@@TexasRailfan21-RailfanRyan I was under the impression that they were going to convert her back to coal burning given the previous attempt to make her an oil burner. This restoration is going to be as faithful as possible to her original coal burning self

2102 could pull future occasional Railfan excursions from Reading Outer Station to Pittston! What happened to that?

'Just a thought, but seeing the passenger cars after the locomotive has passed is "nice", but grows a little "weary" after a while. People JUST want to see the engine, and the closer you can get to it, the better. Your thoughts?
