Hey Gabriel, I really appreciated your take on this book. I think it's so important that we have these conversations on racism. Also, people need to read more books from a black perspective rather than a white perspective of privilege where racism can be simply ignored and depicted as common place without a reckoning with it.

I understand the racism in this book making someone uncomfortable, however I disagree that it would fix it if it were confronted in the book. I can also see how the depiction of drug use in this book and the Goldfinch could be upsetting for someone. Especially if they are dealing with an addict in their personal life. I think part of being a good writer is presenting characters in a nonjudgemental way. When Donna Tartt writes about drug use it doesn't feel like she's praising it or condeming, it's just simply a fact of who the character is. Tartt does show how much Harriett loves Ida. Ida feels most like a mother to her than anyone. Its devastating to Harriett when she looses her. Theres also a sense that Harriett is disgusted and uncomfortable by the way Hely treats the housekeepers in his life. There is a lot of value in hearing from an African American perspective. There should be more representation in the culture and more understanding. This book isn't going to provide that, but I dont think it makes it a bad book.

Finally someone who has read the Little Friend & can talk abt how much it sucks! Hahaha I loved and nearly laugh cried to your rants in the video. Aside the casual racism & ableism which is a bad move as we all know, I couldn’t relate more when u said u just don’t care even if something crazy is about to happen to the characters😹 couldn’t be more accurate. as someone who’s loved the secret history, i’ll just keep it at that and stop any of my donna tartt fan friends from going thru this book lol thank u for the video

watching people on a real life university campus makes me feel like that guy pulling at the gates yelling "let me in, let me iiiinnnn" because my school is forcing us to do online schooling until at least the summer :) "it's 11pm I read nothing today goodbye" is a fat fucking mood for this schoolyear lmaoooo. I loved getting your live reactions to stuff and discussions though so if you were to do this format of vlog with a book you actually enjoyed that didn't slump you it would be so interesting tbh

omg i literally DNFed this book because of the casual racism. i get the setting of the tone and scene, but the lack of condemnation throughout the text opens the door for those people to be justified and UGH i agree with everything you said let me go reread the secret history just to feel something

Heyo Gabe! A book i would like to recommend to you is The Shattering by Karen Healey. It's a great book about loss and recovery and i think you doing a review of it would be really awesome.
