I’m so glad that I came across your channel. I’ve become intrigued by so many books you’ve review. My 3 sisters and I have a formed our own book club. After your review of “Devotion”, while in Italy, I purchased it to recommend it to my sisters as our next read. If they choose another book, I read it on my own. My problem is resisting reading it right now!

I will be so curious to see your personal shortlist and then see how it compares with the actual shortlist on Wednesday. I just finished The Britannias yesterday and really loved it. I could not stop reading it and was so taken with the way she organized it historically/chronologically as well as the way she threaded spirituality throughout. I’m quite keen to read more by her. How to Say Babylon just won the National Book Critics Circle Award for autobiography , which is quite a prestigious US award . Well done to you in reading all 16!

I loved young queens! Haven’t seen many people talk about it but it’s well worth the read. The audiobook was excellent too

I can’t thank you enough for reading the longlist and sharing your thoughts so perfectly. I do read some nonfiction and biographies and it sounds like the Women’s Prize has chosen some corkers. I pity the judges. I’m particularly interested in Thunderclap, Young Queens, All That She Carried, and How to Say Babylon. I read Catch a Fire, a biography of Bob Marley, and have been to Jamaica but have little information on how the religion affected women. I am so curious. ❤📚💚

So excited for this Louise. Thank you so much. You are amazing for reading all of these books. I only had 6 that I chose to read and managed to finish 3 of those thus far. How to Say Babylon (luved it), Eve (luved it too) and Doppelganger (not so much - I know I'm in the minority with this). The other three are Code-Dependent, The Dictionary People and Young Queens. I'm now interested in Shadows at Noon, Wifedom and All That She Carried. Imagine if all these authors listened to your videos, along with the judges. You have done justice to every book on the list. Awesome!

You had me at J Plaidy! Loved those as a child, a definite part of my obsession with the Tudors and a lifelong love of history. Young Queens is on my list, at the top! A great idea to read the non fiction long list, you’ve revealed such a wide cross section of topics and expertise! It really makes me feel woefully ignorant, but eager to read. Thank you for these wonderful reviews. I really appreciate your comments on each book: I get a good idea of the subject, and I always feel you’ve tried to be as fair as possible to the authors and that you honour their work even when they don’t quite manage to enchant you.

I'll not get a chance or have the stamina to read all of these books, so you've helped to bring a little bit of all of them to my awareness. I've already read Doppelganger and All That She Carried, both of which I found compelling. I've ordered A Flat Place, and am interested to read Eve, Britannias, Vulture Capitalism and Shadows at Noon and probably Code Dependant. The judges have a hard choice putting the shortlist together and then choosing a winner - so a cracking start to this first year of the prize.

You’ve made me so excited to keep working my way through this long list, even after the short list and winner are announced. I’m currently right in the middle of listening to How to Say Babylon and it’s just so beautifully narrated by the author. I particularly enjoy when she talks about her mom, as well as how she found her interest with poetry. I have Young Queens on hold and should get it soon. I’ve only read Thunderclap, which I loved and A Flat Place, which I found fascinating in that it offers a truly unique perspective. I’d be happy to see either one, or both, on the shortlist… but I acknowledge there are so many more that I haven’t read!

I'm impressed that you made it through all of these! I wish I had access to more of them, but I know I'll be requesting some through my library. I'm interested in The Brittanias, I suspect it's one that might be better read a bit at a time though. Some nonfiction works best for me that way. I'm thrilled that you loved Young Queens! I've almost finished it myself. I read a lot of history nonfiction and this book is one of the best I've read. Hopefully your enthusiasm will encourage others to try it, too. This series has been a revelation, thank you. One of my favourite genres is fiction based on fact. Why have I never been tempted to read non-fiction 🤷‍♀️? It must be difficult to pick a shortlist from such a wonderful and diverse collection of books.

I would never have read "Wifedom" had I not heard you rave about its narrative voices....It is indeed excellent!!!
