Part 2/2: Ultimate Mobile Chicken Coop
We're replacing our laying flock of chickens this year, with a fresh new batch that we're hatching ourselves here on the Homestead. The goal for this new batch of egg layers, will be to have them be in a mobile coop that can be moved around the yard / pasture every couple of days, to keep them on fresh grass. It will need to have a coop area to keep them safe at night, and a nesting box for egg collection. The timeline for this build is taking much longer than originally planned, mostly due to weather, and limited availability of some of the build items. For this episode, filming started on 4/19/2020 and ended on 4/27/2020.
Part 1: • Building the Ultimate ...
Part 2: • Ready for Chickens! - ...

Happy birthday hun 🎉🎂!!!! That coop is beautiful 😍!!!! My birthday is April 14th. I haven't gotten a physical birthday present from my better half for 8 years now. I'm his caregiver (he's an injured vet) so normally I try to make a nice meal and that's it. However my gift is having him and our 4 kids ❤️.

Did you use t-one 11 on the coop, that shits heavy. Other than that I think you know I'm your # 1 fan, I love the chicken tractor, but he won't build me one, maybe I'll hit my daughter up, she's a wood worker, some day I'll show up on email some stuff she's built me, Rachel you would love the jelly cabinet she built me for my canning stuff, it's double the width of a reg jelly cabinet & has 4 shelves in it, I can fit about 4 quart cases on each shelve. It's just the best & > really needed it, I only have a few cabinets so it really works like a pantry for me.

I have seen some coops where the wheels are on a leaver and you can raise and lower the wheels and lock them in the down position by "over centering" the leaver. I would look for an old lawn mower and use the wheels in a "dual" configuration which would give more flotation.

Good build i made my one 48 inches plus 48 inches for the back covered with tin sheeting A FRAME i built it out off 2 inch sq tube fully welded with a 2 foot wide stripsof 4 x4 inch dog mesh on its flat all around under it to keep foxes out , ,made an extension on 2 poles welded to 20 inch 3/8 plates which i move around with heavy duty dog mesh 6 feet high , i put two heavy duty trailer wheels on a swing up so i can move it to new ground ,i cut all the downgrade steel with a cheapo plasma cutter tacked it together , lots of cheap steal 1/12 and 2 inch steel from shipping container companies a few bucks a length.if ya handy with a welder .its moves easy with the wheels 2 inches off centre to the back, tow it around with my car if need to be .connect the mesh with self drilling metal screws and big washers.

I'm thinking of a type of mobile chicken tractor for my currently 5 but hoping for 9 hens. They were free range at our old property, but our new property has an eagle's nest in the backyard. I like my hens, and want them to have some mobility rather than stuck in a stationary run. Now that you've had a year of use, how does it work and would you change anything.

Maybe some sort of lever on each side that raises and lowers the wheels, with bigger wheels and a long enough lever Rachel should have no problem raising each side by herself. Don't forget a locking mechanism to hold the wheels down during moves. If I could post a picture, I would of what I am describing.

Love your “off the seat of your pants” design 🐓 I would add more predator safety things. Latch because raccoons know how to lift that one. & Secure your wires down with some wood. Because raccoons know how to rip through that chicken wire especially with just the staples. Some use the cattle panel on top of it. Wood around the edges secured with screw. ( but that adds weight) Maybe just for the nighttime you could secure the underneath of the coop house with cattle panel or wood on edges. Incase they get in the chicken wire. You probably already know this. I really enjoyed your video. 😄

This is brilliant, thank you. One thing I am missing though, how do you protect from predators coming into the run from the bottom? Normally people bury hardware cloth two feet deep around the run or make the entire floor from it. Yours seems to be open.

We often observe foxes hunt during the day where we live. I guess they are particularly aggressive around here. A neighbour also lost his dog to a coyote during the day. I really like your design though and I am going to use it, but add a 3” by 4” wire mesh to the floor. They will still be able to pick on grass and eat slugs, etc while being safe.
