Her husband said she was his everything, but when he watched her bash his mom’s head in, he realized she no longer looked at him as her savior but as part of a f*cked-up family. He said, “You won’t be with me after this, will you?” It’s the classic, if you don’t want me, I’ll kill you, trope. Happens irl where a couple gets divorced so the guy kills his ex-wife and kids. Or a woman rejects a man so he stalks and kills her.

It’s because Alex was inherently selfish. He didn’t want her to leave if they didn’t get married; he didn’t tell her about the game; he didn’t tell her about the hide and seek stuff; he never gave her a chance to decide any of those things for herself. So his reasons for marrying her were about him, not her. It makes his heel turn less surprising the second rewatch.

I really love the fact that they made the curse real. It would have still been a strong ending if the curse was just an urban legend that turned out to be fake and the family had to deal with the consequences of their blind faith, but the fact that it was real was so jarring and unexpected it worked really well. Love Samara Weaving as well, and I wish you could have included her curse-filled tirade after that car drove off and left her. It was one of my favorite parts and I could not stop laughing in the cinema.

For me, Alex's turn happens because he loves his mom. If I remember correctly, granted I haven't seen the movie since theatres, she was the only one that really talked to him like a normal person and didn't truly dislike him for leaving the family. She is happy that he's back and that Grace brought him back. Therefore, when Alex arrives in the room and watches Grace kill his mother, his internal switch flips and he buys into the whole gimmick of the family. So, in a way it makes him seem like a tragic character because he only gives in after losing his mother. Then, in the end, you realize he is just a weak, infantile character that will say anything to be on the right side of the events.

@Christopher VanGogh Thanks for the response. Good looking out! I forgot about the connection to Daniel. I must again admit that I haven't seen the movie since it came out. Is there a line of dialogue that says he saw the Le Bail or was it just implied? Overall, I just need to watch this movie again because I remember really liking it.
@amphibiousgirly
@amphibiousgirly 3 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, I think Alex turns because, subconsciously, he does believe in the ritual even if he denies it and calls it bullshit to start with (maybe because of seeing the devil as a child? I forgot about that part). If he truly didn't believe in it then he would have just eloped with Grace or been honest and told her what could happen and never brought her to the family to begin with. Instead he was scared that not following the tradition would cause him and his family to die so he selfishly kept Grace in the dark to avoid the risk. That paired with his brother dying and Grace killing his mom right in front of him probably pushed him over the edge to ultimately side with his family. I don't think he's truly evil per se, but I do wholeheartedly believe that he is a very selfish character.

@tbirum

I have a slightly different take on why Alex did what he did. in the responses some people brought up a few things that I agree with but also this point. Alex loved her, "She was his Everything" but he understood that after everything she had been put through she would not stay with him. So it came down to this for Alex. 1. If I let her go and the curse is real, we all die. 2. If the curse is not real, and I let her go she will leave me and probably call the cops and we all go to Prison. 3. If I sacrifice her and the curse is real we all live. 4. If I sacrifice her and the curse is not real, well at least we do not all go to prison. 5. The only way they would find out if the curse was real would be to lose the game and not end up dead.

i think the funniest thing is that if they had decided not to kill the girl after she won they all probably would have lived. she played the game and that was truly the only rule. @@BryanChuckBrennan pretty sure that the conditions of the deal were that whenever someone new marries into the family they randomly choose a game and if Hide and Seek is indeed chosen then the family must kill the new family member before sunrise or the family dies. Le Bail was just effing with them at the end. It was probably amusing to watch them think they were going to live then slowly realize they're all doomed. I mean the goal of the deal was one new soul for Le Bail every time someone marries into the family or he would collect the family's souls as collateral. Otherwise if they did just have to play and not win then what does Le Bail get out of it? Just getting a kick out of them killing each other? I mean I'm sure he did but he would still to need to get something physical out of it. He didn't get Graces soul so he took the Le Domas's as collateral.

I would warn that the trailer gives away a twist so maybe don't watch that but basically it centers around a babysitter and two kids who find themselves in the middle of a home invasion, but not everything is as it seems. I thought he turned on her because he realized she wouldnt love him and stay with him after what happened that night. Which is why he asked her "You wont be with me after this will you?". He lost his brother, mother, and wife all in one night. Not to mention, the legal implications to their actions that night and his role in them.

I and my friends had a lot of fun with this. Samara Weaving is fast becoming a favourite of mine. Between this, The Babysitter and her small role at the end of Ash vs The Evil Dead first season, she is getting a nice little horror background.

A great wee British werewolf horror film to watch is Howl, it's about a train that breaks down in a forest and the passengers and train conductor find them selves in a fight for survival against a pack of werewolves, it's a wee gem of a horror film and the werewolf effects are brilliantly done.

26:16 I thought about not having the opening sequence. It would be a great move if there was a planned sequel or trilogy in the works, but for a movie that exists by itself (although undoubtedly influenced by similar movies) it was best to give us something to fear during the wedding. It keeps us invested in the plot. The simple cinematography of the wedding being a small affair is wise, I think. Finding tone can be the most difficult thing if you're combining comedy and horror, and I think these guys nailed it.

31:45 Tom, Shaun: it's *VERY* rare that I disagree with your interpretations but dudes, in this one you missed the mark when it comes to Alex's motives. You say that you don't understand why he'd turn on Grace, and that his character was 'heading in the right direction'. If anything, it's the opposite: he starts off determined to save Grace; but then his mother's speech to him has a slight effect; then he sees his brother and mother brutally murdered; then.... and this is key... he says, "You won't be with me after this, will you". He realises Grace is lost to him, so he may as well side with his family. But the most chillingly obvious fact of all is that he was always torn between Grace and his family, otherwise he'd never have put her in that situation. His explanation to her is weaksauce. Fact is, the film never intends Alex to be anything but a douchebag... his brother Daniel is the closest the film has to a 'hero'.

This movie is crazy and brilliant! Also, Weaving's (bride) screaming is next level! I'm gonna rate it 8.7. P.s.: when the groom first tries to help and says that he still wanted to marry her so as not to lose her, even though marrying her could kill her - something she was completely unaware of when deciding to marry him - you are clued in to how selfish he can be. So when you really take that in, him turning on her when realizing she won't stay isn't that shocking at all.

Hi Tom & Shaun! I've watched several of your videos now and have loved them all. I love your choices of films because most are horror...my favorite genre but, what I love most about you guys is your honest reaction to the films as you're the only one's I've found that don't OVERreact!
