Not sure if you will see this but hopefully my answer will help someone out. Nitrogen increases the number of bonds by one, so we add one... It does this because despite taking away a potential bond by simply being there, it can add on a bond that was not there before. Chlorine is subtracted because it is a halogen. You subtract all hydrogens and all halogens. 6:56

As we added one nitrogen, one extra hydrogen to be added. The valency of nitrogen i.e. 03 to be taken into consideration. It is possible to replace 01 Nitrogen for 02 Hydrogens. What about 01 extra Hydrogen obtained due to the addition of Nitrogen. So, Nitrogen is added in the formula. In the case of halogen (i.e. chlorine), as we added a halogen, we have lost hydrogen. In the case of benzene to chlorobenzene, the number of hydrogens went form 6 to 5. So, there was a need to modify the formula. As one hydrogen is lost after the addition of halogen, so halogen is subtracted. In general, when a monovalent atom is added to the compound, hydrogen is lost. So, the addition of the monovalent atom leads to subtraction in the formula of HID. The addition of a trivalent atom leads to an addition in the formula of HID. When oxygen is added, there is no change in a number of hydrogens. So, no addition or subtraction for oxygen. No need to modify the formula.

So you add the Nitrogens but subtract Halogens? I would have completely missed that if it wasn't in an example.
