Since both of these weapons seem to be put on a pedestal by Western gun enthusiasts, I want to share this quote from the VK channel of Razvedos (Former Russian OMON officer and mil blogger). The context is he visited some snipers of the 45th Special Purpose Brigade of the VDV operating around Hostomel in early 2022: ”The special sniper rifle (VSS) and the special assault rifle (AS) have comparable combat characteristics and are in service in "sniper units" - therefore, I consider them within the framework of one publication. Probably, these are the most mythologized and at the same time relatively widespread examples of special weapons. I will say more - both "Vintorez" and "Val" turned out to be so tightly wrapped in a "special forces halo" of wonderful combat properties that even professionals believed in it. However, they can be understood - there has never been such a war as is going on today, and the "Legends from the Exclusion Zone" have proven themselves ... not very well. Firstly, if you fire them, and not just carry and fuck around, then both samples turned out to be very demanding of timely and full-fledged maintenance. For example, a couple of shot "twenties" (20rd magazines) without subsequent cleaning, already led to regular malfunctions on the next day that called into question the use of weapons for their intended purpose. Secondly, all the special cartridges used today are frankly weak and do not "beat" any combined-arms vest, and also work extremely badly on targets behind cover. By the way, the "armor-piercing" cartridges of the SP-6 are designed to work on targets in the "armor" of 2-3 classes (Presumably GOST, so armor designed to stop PS steel core 5.45x39 and 7.62x39 at most. 9x39 won't penetrate NIJ III) and this is really funny. Despite these shortcomings, both examples are used as a "secondary" - that is, a plus to the main sniper rifle, since there are not enough "silenced" assault rifles for everyone. I will finish the note by repeating the conclusion that I made a long time ago - "cans" (suppressors) turned out to be a more effective and universal solution than special silent weapons, and this was fully manifested in the war.” One should also notice, that these 9x39 rifles are not (or very rarely) used by the top tier Russian special units (SSO, CSN FSB etc.), but primarily in regular scout units or the lower tier GRU special units (OBrSpN and OMRP). Suppressed AK-74s or AK-12s are very much preferred.
@ZZizitt11 ай бұрын
True. I think it should also be noted that despite its name, this firearm is more of an SMG than a rifle.
@fridrekr751011 ай бұрын
@@ZZizitt Technically they are rifles, but you are right in that they are closer to SMGs in terms of size and range, although 9x39 has much more stopping power, penetration, and range than subsonic pistol calibers. Tactically, they were meant to be used by one soldier in a squad for taking out sentries etc., which is otherwise done with a suppressed AKM and subsonic 7.62x39. I've never seen whole units using them, which just underlines that they are meant as specialised weapons.

Literally the only English video of the AS VAL that is really in-depth! I Remember a company called "Slagga" was cloning a VSS and called it the "VISKA" but it has been years since then... hopefully with your help us civilians would be able to own one! Glad you are doing well and stay safe!

Slagga MFG ended up scamming a bunch of people, they just took their deposits and ran with it. They apparently had a working prototype but I think I read on forums that it was just a "gray market" import parts kit, not really an in-house US made VSS/VAL. AS means "special automatic", like how AK means "Kalashnikov's automatic". The "A" stands for automatic. The Val is in many ways a Russian version of the MP5SD.
@illyasporysh971910 ай бұрын
@@fridrekr7510 Avtomat means automatic rifle, not the fire mode but the rifle itself (like how in US assault rifle means the same) Avtomaticheskyi is the actual fire mode. So AS is Avtomat Spetsialnyi, Special (purpose) Rifle.
@fridrekr751010 ай бұрын
@@illyasporysh9719 I don't get your point. What I'm saying is that the fact that the weapon is automatic is in it's name. Obviously "Avtomat" refers to automatic rifles in the context of firearms.
