Great video for newbies like me! Thanks for the insight of how a BA's day to day responsibilities and schedule looks like with real time examples. I'm new to BA and wanted to know if you can share a sample project related to banking sector as to what a BA does and the different stakeholders he interacts with.
@AngeloTheBA
@AngeloTheBA 5 жыл бұрын
Even if I could give you an example specific to the banking, you still may be on a project that's totally different. The common thing is always that today you have a system that works one way for so many people, in the future the system needs to be different in some way for some benefit. Actually more than likely needs to be different in many different ways for many different benefits. Your job is to make sure those changes will provide those expected benefits, that they do not get in the way of other benefits of the system, and that everyone is in agreement on how those benefits will be achieved.

Hi I am also a new BA. Where do I get free or paid Software requirements case studies, to boost my BA knowledge and understanding more and more.
@AngeloTheBA
@AngeloTheBA 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not aware of case study specific training. Typically training is centered around techniques and business analysis core concepts. In truth though, the challenging part of being a business analyst is navigating the people in order to get the information you need. In fact, when I was hired, it was mostly because of my interpersonal skills, not my technical skills or experience. I would search for training in negotiating, meeting facilitation, and other interpersonal skills while you search for the perfect BA course (maybe I'll work on making that).

Personally, I just like to challenge myself and I enjoy the feeling of knowing because of my efforts something is better today than it was yesterday; whether it is a process, a software application, or my own abilities. Hi! How much technical knowledge like coding do you think one needs to become a business analyst? I have a Masters degree in Org Psych and another one in Information Technology and Management , I don't have a technical background but ive worked in HR as a consultant as well as in People Analytics (with a research and development focusing on data management for local government). Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
@AngeloTheBA
@AngeloTheBA 3 жыл бұрын
You don't have to be able to code, that's what developers do. Here is an example of the technical skills for a business analyst. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptySn8x9u7aRqpc.html Relative to acquiring the job, it would depend on how well you can sell your transferrable skills. You might have an advantage in HR BA roles over others, but if you can explain why your current skills can make you a successful BA on a resume and during an interview it may be possible. This video might help you consider how to do that kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nt6ghMRzsJuUgHk.html

Ideally, I would work on stories for the upcoming sprints. My priority is to get user stories sprint ready. If there isn't enough information/detail to properly estimate, it cannot be sprint ready. However, as things get developed, you might learn new details that require clarifications or decisions. I do not give my email or personal phone number, but if you want to reach me you can register & message me at metabusinessanalyst.com, find me on LinkedIn, or just ask your questions here (you never know someone else might be able to give you good information as well)

Angelo the BA okay , thank you so much... let’s say you are currently working on stories. Once you get the business requirements and translate them into functional requirements it is now passed along to the development team.. how do you work on other stories if your team is busy working on previous stories .?
@AngeloTheBA
@AngeloTheBA 5 жыл бұрын
In agile, user stories in the sprint are taken from a larger backlog of requests, requirements, etc. That backlog that isn't actively being developed needs to be defined and refined (refined = ensuring user stories are researched, well defined, including all business needs and acceptance criteria) and that what you should be doing. Check the video at 6:05.

Hi Angelo, thank you for these videos. You have no idea how they are helping. Quick question. When you say user stories come from the business, but you write the user stories, Clarify that please. Also the Business Sync meeting on retirement, who is the business sponsor in this case? IS that the PO, Prod. M? Please clarify. Thanks
@AngeloTheBA
@AngeloTheBA 8 ай бұрын
On your point about the user stories. The user stories coming from the business means the need comes from the business (the what), if a BA exist then likely a lot of thought and collaboration needs to happen before it's clear enough to build. This video explains that relationship specifically kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ppt1mKWXvcmpe4U.htmlsi=KnC1PlcKuSLrBiNV
@AngeloTheBA
@AngeloTheBA 8 ай бұрын
On your question of who is the business sponsor. It should be whoever is actually the business sponsor. You often don't DECIDE who needs to be involved, you ASK who needs to be involved (either directly or by clarifying their role/responsibility/need) and involve them. A PO or ProdM in my organization or might have more or less responsibility than a PO/ProdM in your organization.

How does the salary change. Is it based on firm size or your experience. Also how quickly does your salary increase
@AngeloTheBA
@AngeloTheBA 4 жыл бұрын
Your salary increases as your ability to work independently and effectively increases. Experience is the standard path because the more you do something, the less likely you'll repeat the same mistakes and you can be given greater responsibility. However greater responsibility often means more work. So some people take on additional work, gain experience faster and thus accelerate their salaries faster. Some people prefer to pace themselves and have more time for non-work priorities. Long story short, your salary will increase as quickly as your willing to put in the work and sacrifices to make it increase.

Hello Angelo. I am currently working as a Data Engineer in an MNC and looking forward to an MBA. With heavy data handling experience I am in a dilemma between Business Analyst specialization and Core Functionalities of MBA (viz Marketing, Ops, Finance, HR). To add to this I have strong communication skills and this is something I miss in my current role. So could you draw up some career paths that can be viable if I get into an MBA(BA) specialization.
@AngeloTheBA
@AngeloTheBA 4 жыл бұрын
Enterprise Architect is a common career path for a BA with an MBA (or a business major with IT specialization... or IT professional with an MBA). I don't have a specific video on that, but this career path video explores the role a bit kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sLaqZaqD1rHGhHk.html (already set to that point in the video)

Angelo Kalevela i really appreciate your video! Can You tell us if BA is a high paced, stressful, brainkiller job in general? or not? Thank you
@AngeloTheBA
@AngeloTheBA 3 жыл бұрын
It can be, but it mostly depends on where you work. A generalist BA consultant will work in a more fast paced manner. Having to learn new domains at new companies with new people and process quickly and deliver on a schedule. On the other end of the spectrum a subject matter expert BA for an organization who knows their space and knows all the right people to talk to when things need to change will be an far less stressed out. It would like being a substitute teacher and switching classes and subjects every week (and expected to actually teach) vs having one subject and one set of students for the whole year.

@AngeloTheBA
@AngeloTheBA 4 жыл бұрын
That depends. Agile isn't about saying one person MUST do anything. That's why they remove titles and have a TEAM. Here is my video explaining my take on a BA writing user stories kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ppt1mKWXvcmpe4U.html. Specifically talking about wireframes, it should be the person with the skills and bandwidth. I created them for my team because I was passionate about UX. In some companies, a UX team exists seperately from the team and does it.

If someone needs to be informed of a change. I set up a meeting and inform them. Usually creating some kind of visual to walk through the contents (models/diagrams). If I require lots of feedback, I use meetings with small audiences for better collaboration. If its an "I talk, you listen" kind of meeting then it doesn't really matter the size.

@AngeloTheBA

Depends. Sounds like you are pretty junior in your BA career, so what I would do isn't what I'd advise you to do. I would be direct and say, this is going to change for reason X, Y, Z unless anyone can tell me otherwise. You might trying a softer approach like "I was thinking about some enhancements in this space, but I don't know all the reasons why this was put here, so help me understand so I don't break anything".... I also recommend reading the resources listed in the description of this video ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nrSjoNhn0rLcdGQ.html ), so you can come to these kinds of conclusions on your own.

First BA tip: If you want a specific result, provide specific and relevant information. As you can imagine, telling you to major in Management Information Systems would be a poor tip if you already have that as a major or have already graduated. Examples of specific and relevant information to provide an actual valuable answer: Are you choosing a major? Are you about to graduate in a specific major? Do you need resume tips? Are you already getting interviews? Are you already a working professional? Are you trying to choose a graduate degree? Are you looking for professional certifications?

When meetings end, then starts the scramble to get everything done I need to so I can leave at a decent hour. If I don't get those things done by the end of my day, I'm messing up the productivity of my developers and teammates during their day.
