If you are looking for a real Rocky Mountains back country adventure, look no further than Kananaskis Provincial Park! Less popular than Banff, but just as beautiful and not so overcrowded. There is definitely so much beauty in Canada when it comes to raw wilderness and so many places in Alberta offer just that. Join me and my Mom for a lovely weekend spent in the backcountry at a gorgeous eco-lodge called Mount Engadine. They have won many awards as one of the best hotels in Canada, so definitely check them out if you are looking for an amazing stay in stunning nature:

SafetyWing (best for younger travelers + digital nomads): www.safetywing.com/a/alinamcleod
I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. I am an affiliate for both companies, but I pay for my own policies.

Here in CA we have similar place called Yosemite. We also have beers and grizzlies. But what people do in Yosemite when they see a bear? They all gather and take selfies with the beer instead of running away! 🐻

Better hurry up. It won't be peaceful for long if the Alberta government has its way. It's not even peaceful now compared to what it was 25/30 years ago. Tourism has destroyed Banff National Park, and it's now working on Kananaskis.

Hello Alina and Mom, Thank you for including us on this very scenic excursion. I will definitely insert this onto the list of location to see in Canada. The glamping accommodations look absolutely welcoming and comfortable. Nice to see there was a wood stove for those chilly evenings, add a beverage and a board game I am so there. I did meet up with a black bear when camping in northern Ontario. I was 11 -12yrs old at the time. I and my friend had just encountered a snake while out walking so we ran from that. After a long run we came across a ( I think ) blueberry bush, which we started picking some, got to the end of the bush and went around to the other side and there was a Black Bear getting berries like us but on the other side. WELL, we looked at it and it looked at us for what seemed like forever. I think it was just as astonished as us and slowly moved away from us and kept going. Needless to say we headed back to our camp Take care and stay safe, Larry

It's good you carry bear spray. Their is an ear piercing whistle made by one of the bear spray companies that really scares them away, and gets the attention of other people nearby. eBay has them, they are cheap, orange plastic Black bears aren't really aggressive, usually. The nightmare scenario is a brown bear, a Grizzly or Kodiak. 😊👍🇺🇸🇨🇦 *Fox Mean Green is a law enforcement grade spray and it is 6% capsicum. I carry the Fox Mean Green 1.5oz. and 3oz. Stream. Bear spray is only 2%. Check your laws there though.

Going to show my age. When I was 14, I attended the World Boy Scout Jamboree. It's only held once every 4 years, and you must be at least 14 to attend, so normally there is only one that you will qualify to attend. That year it was supposed to be somewhere exotic, but that country had financial issues and Canada volunteered to host it as they were having the Canadian Jamboree the year before and could use the same setup. We drove a school bus across BC to the a campground for 16,000 people in the Kannaskis. Included in the 2 week event was one day in Banff and one day at the Calgary Stampede. Because it was bear country you had to go get your food twice a day from a central distribution point and then throw all remaining food away each evening. If I remember correctly they were trapping and taking away to release more than a bear a day within the campsite.

Many years ago, Harriet and I visited the Rockies in the Kananaskis Woods. We did visit Banff but enjoyed the hikes we took in Kananaskis Woods. We were there in May. It was cold but comfortable . I have walk a few trails in Kananaskis and it is the typical Canadian rural area. Remote for cell coverage but not really remote to access. I've lost track of the number of Black bears I've encountered and as you say they mostly just want to avoid dealing with us. I've spent many days walking in the woods so have encountered deer, moose, elk, antelope, sheep, timber and grey wolves, foxes and beavers. I'm not a hunter, but sometimes I've had a gun, sometimes not, but found that remaining calm, keeping a reasonable distance, basically not appearing to try and threaten them, we have coexisted. I've never had to fire a shot in anger or fear. After all I'm in their home, and I have expected them to well, be at home. Humans forget that although we are a top tier predators, we are not apex predators, and are seen as prey by some animals. Wild animals are not Disney cartoon animals or pets and humans have been far more vicious to animals than the other way round. Glad your encounter went well and you got to truly enjoy the back country. It truly is beautiful to behold the wild and free. Great video.

Beautiful video Alina. I work for Alberta Parks in Kananaskis - just a little safety correction, if you encounter a grizzly bear don't just lie down and cover your head, if it's a predatory bear you may just be making yourself an easy meal! Assess whether it is a defensive charge (because it is guarding food or young), in which case back away and if attacked 'play dead' do not fight back. However, if it is a predatory charge (no cubs or food in sight, and it may have been stalking you for a while), fight back as much as possible. BUT ALWAYS TAKE BEAR SPRAY, KNOW HOW TO USE IT, AND KEEP IT QUICKLY ACCESSIBLE.
