Get my course - Ace the Front End Interview: gum.co/KlowV
PART 2 (WHITEBOARD): • REAL Front End Intervi...
Ever wondered what you'll be asked in front-end engineer interviews?!
This video is to give an idea of what you questions could reasonably expect from a front-end developer hiring process.
I decided after filming to obscure company names with the exception of the last one, as the repo for that assignment has been archived and is publicly available. As I state in the video, I don't think knowing these questions ahead of time would make a tangible difference in the outcome, as I encountered all of them as take home assignments. The types of companies vary: a large tech company, a mid-sized marketing company and a government organization. I think the variety in companies give a broad idea of what you could expect.
I mention at the beginning that I try to cover questions from all stages--though these were all take home assignments, I think a lot of these questions (especially the algorithms) could reasonably show up on phone screens or whiteboard interviews.
I hope you find this helpful!

That government job was crazy. You made the right choice moving on. I don't think I've ever seen something like that asked of a potential candidate. That's essentially working for free, which unless you can show in your portfolio, you should never, ever do.

I tuned out as soon as it had a section on designing. That's 100% not my job lol. I am not the creative party, I just make the UI that the UX team creates. Not doing both myself.

pureromanticatheart thanks! Glad it was helpful. For that assignment, I had about 3-4 days but it was pretty flexible. I was somewhat conscious of not wanting to take too long, but that may have been self imposed. It was for a junior/entry level position. Hope that helps!

Thank you so much for posting these questions from employers. I'm a recent js developer I recently updated my websites I build in html and css so I plan to start heading to applying towards companies in the next few weeks so since you been in the field for a minute now what core things would you suggest a vanilla js developer on what I'm going to mor likely see these days?.
@PeterElbaum
@PeterElbaum 4 жыл бұрын
KidBrave thanks for your encouragement! It’s hard to say without knowing what kind of companies you’re applying to, but it could be anything from algorithm type questions (FizzBuzz, etc) to a take home project. I’d also suggest possibly looking into learning a framework since most FE app work these days is centered around that style of development.

@@PeterElbaum absolutely brotha you gave us some great information!. I totally understand as far as me not having a specific company in mind for you to go off of... I honestly plan to applying to any and every company out there I'm just trying to get a start. I understand a framework is where it's at as far as building applications but I'm trying to jump into the field right now as a vanilla js developer and have a company groom me having me use there team current framework... when you started applying did you know a framework quite well?.

What is the url for the last test - the one you didn't do? I wouldn't mind having a go as I'm stuck at home during the coronavirus mess. The last assignment I did for my current employer was making a react/typescript based app with graphql that had to work off line using cached data. It does annoy me that I have to keep doing these tests, POs don't have to do these things. They should see from my CV that I have been doing web development for 15 years and that should be enough. No other job expects you to prove you can do what you say you can. Does this annoy you too?

Were you applying to JavaScript or Frontend Dev positions specifically? If I was applying for a ReactJs position do you think they'd ask me to make a vanilla JS mockup like that?
@tadeulima8805

Yeah they do man! But its mostly to check if you know how to work with arrays (filter, includes, reduce, etc..) and objects (loops, spread)

The government job is asking for way too much. They need to provide a design and at least provide the data in an object we can just copy and paste into a variable in our code.

I think it's a good test for your resourcefulness, e.g. if you can't convert that data into an object you'd probably be a terrible candidate for the job.

I'm sure they do, but if every company randomized all questions most of us would never land a job, so some questions are general/standard/common. Believe me, just from asking a few 'tangential' questions they'll know if your skill level.
