This is my own experience with box dye from the drugstore; When I used Garnier Olia my hair was so soft and not dry at all after chemically processing it. When I tried Schwarzkopf Ultime (had high hopes with this one since it has its own line used by professional hairdressers in the salon) my hair was left feeling really dry and I was surprised. I hope this helps someone who is having trouble deciding between the two.

I didn't know there was a stigma! I reckon that's more likely in hairdressing circles than the wider public. I think most people use box colour because it's affordable and relatively low risk if you want a solid colour. It's lightening where it can go pear shaped. We've all had a few colour mishaps at some point but you learn from your mistakes. I'd love to get my colour done at the salon but getting a decent cut is already a huge expenditure from my budget. I prefer to pay for a decent cut and top up colour myself before the grey gets me and I'm forced to use a salon. I love Olia, it's one of the few that doesn't wreck my hair.

I wish this video was out a few months ago when I spent almost $300 total with a stylist in 2 attempts to get my hair red from medium brown. She lifted the color for the red to take. Each time the red washed out on the 1st wash. I went back after I told her it washed out and spent more $ to try again. After my failed attempts my daughter dyed her own hair with a red box dye and it looked AMAZING. I don't mind spending $ for great results but I felt like a sucker after literally throwing $ down the drain. This was an amazing video. Maybe I'll give it another shot on my own. Thank you!!!

If your hair is bleached and light. Dye your hair a light brown with box dye. Probably just a old school regular Light brown , not Ash , and then dye your hair a red brown like an auburn 2 weeks later (because you want to let your hair rest) and I guarantee it’ll look bomb on you. If she bleached your hair and then you do red with no base it’ll just keep on washing out too much. That’s my opinion! I have had dark red before from box dye. I’m not a hair dresser! Take advice at your own risk but also know that red takes Months to get out of hair if you use box dye and want to switch to a brown. It’ll take probably 6 months to a year with dying your hair every 3 months if you wanna go brown from red. Just FYI cuz I had to do that to go back to my medium brown from auburn. If your hair is now a medium brown from her lightning your hair before , just pick up a red shade from the box dyes and it’ll look good. If you get hot roots and don’t want them and need to fix them. Dye roots one shade darker than the mid and ends and you’ll be good.

If your hair was dyed before she had to bleach it. Unlike your daughter whose hair is probably less damaged and therefore takes the color better. ALL redheads will tell you that shampoo takes out the red horribly. It talks more of the porosity of the hair and damage and less of the color. Red head shampoo and conditioner plus upkeep with demipermanent hair dye or direct hair dye are needed keeping red hair red is hard... harder than blonde ill say

Box Color is NOT terrible but you need to have the RIGHT expectations. 1) If your hair is not already dyed and you stay within 2 Levels of your natural color you can get Good Results. 2) If your hair has been chemically processed ( Color, Bleach, Perm, Relaxed ) you need to do a STRAND TEST before proceeding. AMMONIA - FREE Color uses ETHANOLAMINE instead which is less odor. OIL BASED Color uses an Oil Base to better preserve the hair’s natural Lipid Layer so it is better conditioned and because the Dye Stuffs used dissolve in OIL better than water you can get a better color result with LESS FADING from exposure to water. FÉRIA is a TRANSPARENT, Permanent Color that uses a PURE DYE that works WITH the existing shade - Example: a BLUE BLACK shade would use a Transparent “No Base” color of Deep Blue to Add a Blue Tone to Dark Brown or Black hair, if used on a lighter shade the result would be very Bluish or Greenish

I really liked Revlon Colorsilk. I learned not to overlap the dye as it gets darker with each application. I used level 5 on my natural level 8. It looked great. Unfortunately the ethanalomine hurt my skin over time, not good for people with skin sensitivities: eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis...
@jimbearone
@jimbearone 2 жыл бұрын
@@brightphoebus I’m sorry to hear that, most colors that use peroxide can cause skin irritation even on normal skin. However, if you are going darker or just covering gray there are new plant based colors that don’t use peroxide or synthetic colorants and can be much safer for people with skin problems and still give beautiful, long - lasting results.

ALL PERMANENT HAIR COLORS DAMAGE THE HAIR to some degree, even the ones for professionals. It is how you apply it and how often you use it that makes the most difference. They try to tell you that Drugstore Box Dye is more damaging but they have to formulate it to be used by amateurs. Also, it doesn’t Lighten or Color as well as the Professional Dyes - How can this make sense? The MAJOR DIFFERENCE between Box Dye and Professional Dye is EDUCATION. A professional colorist is supposed to know how to formulate and apply Bleach and Color Correctly for each individual client. Professional Dyes also have a greater range of shades, up to HUNDREDS of colors, as well as Additives, Developers, Modifiers Etc. However, all the professional brands use the same basic Dyestuffs as the drugstore brands with a few exceptions as there are only a certain number of Dye Compounds available for use on Hair. Most Drugstore Dyes are actually OWNED by many of the same parent companies of the Professional Brands so they can’t really be all that different just marketed differently.

I have used Feria by L’Oréal and I can’t tell you how much compliments I have received from hairdressers and people on the street. It leaves my hair with a beautiful champagne blonde , not brassy at all and it covers all my white hair. I have used it for years with the same results. I use #91 which it’s Champagne blonde, and it originally is blond with a bit of very saddle beige tone and after a couple of washes it’s just a beautiful blonde. I apply it every two months because it has highlights it gives the impression of having intentional highlights. Just beautiful.❤❤❤❤❤❤

thank you for the honest review! I think box dye has come a long way. I have used it in the past and sometimes had even better results than in a salon. That said...I now prefer professional color because I want to be able to chose and mix it individually for my hair. I use ammonia-free toner with 10 vol. developer because that's more than enough to cover-up my greys (I have very fine hair) with the least amount of damage. Also, imo box dye looks great after first use- but over time, even if you only touch-up your roots and just refresh the length for a few minutes...it will damage and dry out the hair. The developer is too strong to constantly overlap the already colored length.

I used to use Olia hair dye because I had difficulty breathing and my eyes hurt when using dyes that contained ammonia, whether it was a box dye or a professional one in a salon. It has nothing to do with 'damage' to the hair. I didn't even know that was the reason Olia didn't have ammonia - I thought that it was for sensitive people like me. I used to find that my hair was in good condition after using it and the colour was good with different tones and shine. However, I had a bad reaction to a "sensitive" hair dye in a salon and the stylist had to quickly wash the colour out. I had been fine with the patch test a few days earlier, yet it hadn't been on long before I started to feel dizzy and sick. Months later, I did a test patch of Olia which I'd found to be gentle before, but I started to feel woozy and I had a strange pain/altered sensation radiating from the swatch on my arm. I washed it thoroughly, by which time the pain had already reached my neck. I looked up my symptoms and it was a systemic reaction, so I would've been at a high risk of going into anaphylactic shock if I'd actually applied the dye to my head. Antihistamines sorted me out, but I'd advise anyone else who has any reaction to go straight to their A&E or ER. It can be life threatening. So, now I have to use natural henna and indigo. I get pretty good results, but it isn't as quick or easy to use as Olia. On the plus side, there are no dangerous chemicals and my hair is in fabulous condition :)
@miaschu7614
@miaschu7614 Жыл бұрын
Btw, my hairdresser asked me about my hair because she loved the colour and was surprised at how healthy it is. She told me that they use henna at their salon, when I told her that I'm never sure if I'm applying it correctly at the back of my head. Yet when I asked to see the product I found that it contained chemicals as well. I couldn't risk that. I would advise anyone to avoid henna that's mixed with chemicals; if it's mixed with salts it can cause major damage to your hair if you use anything else on your hair that it reacts with. The natural stuff is a bit messy and you might need a little practice, but it's much safer. I'd read up on it and watch how other people use it on KZfaq, if you're interested.

I buy my own developer & color from Sally's Beauty. I find that it's less harsh on my hair. And really no more costly than the box dies. I have thin hair that tends to go brassy especially if I color it too often or use a strong developer. I now use a low 10 developer for sensitive scalp and I mix it one part to one part with a demi color and gloss. It's took over a year of trying different color mixtures to get it to that perfect color. Also by adding the gloss it makes my hair shinier and a more translucent, which blends nicely with grow out gray. And no more brassiness.

Like with me I find if I wanna pull red, go Garnier. I forget the specific one I used, Naturals? It always pulls more vibrancy (brighter red) from my natural red. Whereas if I wanna pull more chocolate/natural tone-ish, I grab for L'oreal Preference. Over time even inside each brand one learns how each can vary, lol. My go to has always been L'oreal Preference. Leaves my hair in better shape, and the colors give me a better result.

I am a person who has used the “Real” hair dresser dye from Sally Beauty because of Brad Mondo always preaching about actually doing hair “properly “ and honestly it doesn’t compare to Box dye. Box dye cones of so much more shiny, dimensional color and lasts! I am back on box dye after using Demi hair dye from Sally Beauty per Brads advice. Gabi I agree with you that not all professional hair colour brands have vibrand reds.Lativel is a brand that my hair dresser uses and the colours are really natural,all of the reds and L'Oreal Majirel,they have 0 reds like woah,but they have TONS of blonde tones which I love.I live in Greece and box dyes are 1/3 of the price of what you got them,but then again,i order my hair dyes online,they cost the same as the box hair dyes tbh.Box hair dyes contain max 155ml of total product (with the developer) and they can cost up to 15 bucks and the better option here is to get individual tubes of professional hair colour,they cost 6-8 bucks the 100ml and the developer for 1 use costs a few cents.If people have a cosmetic store near them that sells hair dyes,they could do some eye shopping and compare prices.Right now though,I bleach my hair using the wella bleach and i dye my hair purple with the brand directions.Anyway,great video,keep it up,you just got a new subscriber ♥

Hi Gabi, great tips and advice. I've been dying my hair for years and have never gone to a hair salon to do it. 1, because they're expensive, 2, they take too long so they can justify the price, and 3, I can do it myself at home! If I colour my hair today, it'll last for at least 3 months and when my greys are starting to show I'll wear a headwrap and give my hair a rest for about another 2-3 months. My hair is in great condition. I've got a friend who swears by getting her hair 'professionally' done at the salon and what's funny is, her colour comes out the same way as mine....no difference! She's paying a lot for them to sit her in a salon chair, offer her a drink, and then colour and wash then style 😂😂. Box dyes for me are brilliant. I've made the odd mistake now and then over the years where I've gone for a lighter shade thinking it'll cover the grey but it's done nothing. Now I've realised I need to use a darker colour (dark brown) so everything is covered. But box dyes for me are the way to go! Thanks for sharing ❤

I’m younger so I don’t need to cover grays much but I use dark on the roots and shade lighter on the length. Color comes out bomb. Better than any salon could do and I also don’t go to a salon. Completely over priced like you said !

@@smritinarang5928hi, if your experiencing slight greys I'd leave them alone unless they are visible and are bothering you. Colouring hair that is already grey isn't going to affect the hair that isn't grey it's just going to blend into the hair. There's not really a specific dye that I go to I tend to try different ones. But there's one dye that I do keep going back to but unfortunately can't remember the name of it, all I can say is it's a natural dye in a green-ish box! I think it's plant based and has very good natural ingredients in it. Sorry I don't know the name of it 😩 I'll look for it the next time I go to the store but if you manage to figure out which one I'm talking about please let me know!! Hope this was somewhat helpful, hope you have a lovely day wherever you are ❤🇬🇧

The Original Haircolor formula(s) were based on OIL (usually, Tall Oil Acid or Oleic Acid) Miss Clairol Creme Formula, Miss Roux, Rayette and all of the Liquid Professional Color used OIL as the BASE and Carrier of the dyes. This is why you had to shampoo the hair after rinsing the color to remove excess oil from the product even the “Shampoo-In” type colors needed to be shampooed because they were Oil Shampoo Tints meaning the product used a sulfonated oil as the base which allowed the shampoo-in application. More modern colors use Dyes that are more water soluble to skip the shampoo step and allow a Creme or Treatment type conditioner to be used right after but these are not as water resistant as the old Oil Based colors they are just easier to rinse out.

Hooray! Fun review. I always wanted to try Schwartzkopf. I was a regular user of Revlon Colorsilk. It lasted great, looked natural, and didn't dye too dark, and didn't damage my hair. I have dry, sensitive eyes also so the ammonia free, in my little bathroom, my eyes thanked me. I used to do my roots every 2 weeks cuz they were obvious tho, and my scalp became sensitive to the MEA. I had to stop coloring : (

When I've gotten my hair colored and roots touched up in Texas, California, and Wisconsin, (in all, several decades) the colorists would "poke" some color into the follicles after brushing it on. They would do this at each part -- separate a section, brush brush poke poke (the poke is with the ends of the brush bristles). That little poke each time gave me 7 to 10 extra days before any roots showed, and I'm mostly gray. Where I live now, where I've tried 5 colorists and have given up and will do my own hair, every colorist only did the brush brush, no poke poke. And my roots would show up exactly 10 days later. Never saw them before 3 weeks before, but now, I could set my calendar on the 10 days. One of the several very frustrating reasons I'm doing my own hair from now on. I'll be doing the brush brush poke poke routine.

Color lasts perfectly 6+ weeks which is amazing for fade prone reds. I get tons of compliments on the color. I would love to see you use box dye to tackle grey roots as I've discovered the box dye does "take" differently on the grey roots (ie what is needed to treat the grey/white roots in order for it to match the rest of the hair). I have natural medium blonde hair with highlights and no matter what level of box dye blonde, my white/grey roots always come in like a dark root smudge...thankfully that is kinda fashionable at the moment lol.

I was using Garnier Olia Light Auburn for a few years and it was, for me, the best boxed hair color I've used. However, stores stopped selling the color. I went to Amazon to order a few boxes, but they turned my hair clown orange ! Obviously, the seller was sketchy and had old product or it was substituted with something else. I used Schwarzkopf a couple of times, in the Caramel Blonde (even though I'm a red gal), and thought the results were very good. However, Schwarzkopf only has the burgundy type reds and I want the other color red, e.g., light to medium auburn, without the purple or burgundy hues. Wish they offered it my color. Your videos are super -- thank you !

L'Oréal creme gloss have a semi permanent, ammonia free hair dye called Amber which is on the lighter side, and L'Oréal also have a bit of a darker shade in a permanent dye from the Excellence creme range called Natural rich auburn. Both are great, the gloss leaves the hair in fantastic condition. I'm not sure what the Garnier colour looked like but perhaps they might be similar

Yes, sounds like you and I are going for the same color. I don't want any purple, at all, under my red. But I also don't want the RED red. My first attempt, she gave me candy-apple red. Not what I asked for. It's a cute fashion color, but not for me. Then there was the three-layer cake salon. Every person who received color got the same pattern. Medium on top, lighter in the middle, and darker on bottom (I'm speaking of the scalp), and then a "tail" of dark from the crown falling down the back. Next place had reasonably good color, but when I asked for a trim of my long hair, her "trim" consisted of combing my hair down, holding it against my back, and cutting straight across the bottom. That'll be 90 bucks! I could have gotten that at Supercuts for $12. Fourth colorist was, I think, not stable. She gave reasonable color, but she kept disappearing for 30-40 minutes at a time. I'd come in first customer of the day, she'd seat me at her station then disappear for 40 minutes. She'd go to mix color and come back 30 minutes later. She'd rinse my hair and disappear for another 40. A simple root job took over four hours -- I had an 8 a.m. appointment and was there on time, as was she, but I was late for a 12:30 lunch date because I couldn't get out of there. Then the last one: Every time I went in, I'd end up with a different color, and none of them were the color I asked for. And she would sometimes forget to color my bangs (!). So one time, she had to correct the bangs, and the color came out exactly like I'd been wanting the whole time. So I made an appointment to get that exact shade all over. But she gave me something several shades browner. Done and done. With all of them. As long as I live in this metropolitan area (it's not a small town -- there's over 4 million people), I will do my own hair.

For red...I only use profesional..because I do not need high volume, 20volume max(for my natural) and most reds have 30 ...some even more. Lots of people that uses box red for a long time, their hair is fried. I use my red or more than an 1 year, hear is shiny and soft..but I mix my own color with developer 10-20volume. Great piece! I fall into the category, Dark hair covering grey roots very 2-3 weeks, my hair grows VERY fast is virgin hair and in great shape, and long. I only color the roots and mayb every few jobs drag it through the rest, but this color seems to hang in there long term. I like a Brown/Black color and found this exact color with a box color. It is soft and has some dimension to it. In the sunlight you can tell it is not black but it is not dk Brown. Because of my resistant grey it works well. I have looked at other vendors, however they only have the option of Black (various tones) or Brown (various tones). I have only found this Brown/black with one vendor. And they are on the less expensive end. Quality? No ammonia. How can I get this sort of combo color with others who do not do a Brown/black version? Or is it even doable? Thank you! Subscribed!

It lasts about 3 weeks. I'm 56 and am approx 80 % gray. Olia covers it which Clairol Natural Instincts Ammonia free formula does not. I think it's all around a decent non Ammonia color. My hair is naturally medium to dark brown, but I use light brown because my hair tends to draw in the darkness. Medium brown looks dark brown on me and dark brown looks black.

I was horrified, couldn’t believe how much that dye dried my hair, and it said to have oils in it, and be very gentle to the hair. Also, the color was so far away from what I expected it to be, instead of a dark golden blonde I got red hair :)) I promised myself, never again! If I can afford going to a salon, that’s the only decent option out there, otherwise there’s no hair dyeing for me.
