Property owning white men had it made early in our history, followed by those who did not own property, thanks to Andrew Jackson. Your analysis is on point but incomplete. One of the best speeches I used with my students, along with all the classic writings by the Founding Fathers was "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?" It was delivered by Frederick Douglass in 1852. The tragedy is that the first Africans here were not slaves. They were servants and some bought their own freedom. Imagine if they had remained free. Unfortunately, the colony of Virginia decided that slavery based on color and perpetuated by heredity would be the norm. Imagine being a free African who owned property in the colonies and then to discover you would now be in bondage? Horrible. We know the Founders knew that slavery was a grave mistake but they decided to kick the can down the road. We are still dealing with that aftermath We would be far further along as a country had the Plessy vs Ferguson decision not been decided the way it was in 1896. From one history teacher to another: The idea of who got to be an American was very limited and even excluded the literate tribes. Fortunately there have been strides in who does in fact get to be American. But yes, absolutely compared to the conditions in Europe at the time, those who moved to America generally did far better. Yes it is true the government has more of an effect largely due to the New Deal and FDR. However, given the leaders that Europe got in the 1930's, I'll take FDR any day. Have a great 4th.

✍Hello Chris...But the young people of today aren't being taught the way we were taught to see and learn history. Those men were living a different life style and had to take life seriously because of the government they were living under. Kids today do not know what its like to live in a country without all the conveniences that all those men of yesterday not only invented but took everything serious enough to fight for. The generation in which you were born as far as I'm concerned was the last of the old ways. My girls are 60-54 and were raised like I was. They would tell me how they didn't fit in with kids of their age that they were like displaced people... They weren't old but did think like the adults they got along with. The young people I've come in contact today have no common sense or seem to be interested in what's important in life. Our school systems were much different in the 30-40-50-60s. But you probably know that from being a teacher. Most of my cousins are teachers and professors and they have shared many stories of how kids are being taught and what they're not being taught or even allowed to be taught. One summer my husband and I went for our yearly visit to see his mom is Wauchula Florida. We lived in northern Indiana. Direct route takes you through Georgia. Even with our A/C on we roasted. Never again lol! We went out of route through Alabama and every year since.
