Real Image If the rays of light emitted from a point source undergo a reflection or refraction and after reflection or refraction converge into a second point then the second point is termed as the real image of the point source.
Virtual Image If the rays of light emitted from a point source undergo a reflection or refraction and after reflection or refraction diverge around then the point of divergence is called the virtual image of the point source.
Optical Image If the rays of light emitted from a point source undergo a reflection or refraction and after reflection or refraction if they converge into a point or appear to diverge from a point then the point of convergence or the point of divergence is termed as the image of the point source.
Real Image Virtual Image (1) All the rays reflected or refracted must reach the position of Real Image. (1) All the rays reflected or refracted never reach the position of Virtual Image. (2) Real Image can be cast on the screen. (2) Virtual Image cannot be screened. (3) Real Image is inverted relative to the object. (3) Virtual Image is upright with respect to the object. (4) Examples of Real Images are movies, pictures from a projector , camera pictures, etc. (4) Examples of Virtual Images are mirage, images on mirrors, images in a microscope etc.
