James Brown used that “So What” horn harmony on several of his hits including on, “I Feel Good”.

You've got people like Mozart and Beethoven in classical music, Sinatra/Elvis/the Beatles/Zeppelin/Micheal Jackson in popular music, MJ in basketball, Ruth in Baseball, etc, etc ...that is what Miles Davis is to jazz. The giant among giants. Saw him live several times, including not long before his death. A monumental figure in modern music.

The great John Coltrane on sax. So laid back. Miles was the coolest. I played trumpet in grade school, but never knew of him. I would still be doing it if I had known you could do what he does.

So What was released in 1959 on the Kinda Blue album. Kinda Blue is a jazz standard. The band was Miles' greatest and included jazz legends, John Coltrane (sax), Cannonball Adderley (not present in this video), Wynton Kelly (piano), Bill Evans (not present here), Paul Chambers (bass), and Jimmy Cobb (drums). To enter the world of 'serious' jazz, Kinda Blue is a good place to start.

Brilliant - so pleased to see someone with genuine interest & curiosity May I humbly recommend Chick Correa & Return no Forever - something like Celebration suite or Spain . . . one of many Miles Davis's musical children . . .😉

Nice one. I have a couple of suggestions. For good guitar work, check out Wes Montgomery doing Round Midnight. For more modern stuff, Stanley Clarke doing School Days. For fun? The Vince Guaraldi trio doing the Linus and Lucy theme.

Miles Davis released 60 studio albums and 39 live albums during his career, so you could spend a lot of time digging in. But perhaps start with the next two songs on Kind of Blue, the album "So What" kicks off, "Freddie Freeloader" and "Blue in Green". But if you just want to take more samples from his discography, check out "'Round Midnight", "Dear Old Stockholm", "Bye Bye Blackbird", "If I Were a Bell", "Oleo", and "Straight, No Chaser". Also check out "Solea" -- that one weirds out my cats. Heh.

Miles is a legend! I am a words & music person though. For Jazz my go to is George Benson and people who sing some and play some. Quincy Jones albums like Back On The Block. Even if you never react to him listen to Maynard Ferguson's song Primal Scream it is so good. Again thanks for doing all kinds of music. 😊

Saw Miles at Toronto's much lamented Forum, a revolving stage in a natural bowl surrounded by grassy hillsides, free with admission to Ontario Place, now under threat of corrupt, wrong-headed redevelopment, maybe a casino (!!) instead of the people's park it was. I think that was the tour Miles told his guitarist, "forget jazz, play Hendrix."

something you might wanna check out from around the same era (even if you don't do it for content for your channel) are some old TV series like "Jazz Casual" here in the states or "Jazz 625" from the BBC -- lot of live performances like this from a lot of miles' contemporaries, worth checking out.

used to could be you could find the entire half-hour performance on youtube, as miles plays some fantastic pieces with an orchestra behind him. i may have to track that down and upload it again.

I hated jazz (wasn't mature enough). Then i heard KIND OF BLUE, it changed my life and broadened my view. I'm not an expert, still don't get the greatness of THE LOVE SUPREME (just can't listen to it), sorry Mr. Coltrane. But i love Miles' electric period- JACK JOHNSTON, ON THE CORNER, DARK MAGUS. Everybody knows about BITCHES BREW but he had better moments

You're right the Jazz era was chill but a big part of the jazz community was on heroin. Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking it just stating facts. I'm from the 70's era rock and roll and it was a bit more manic and trippy again it was a sign of the times the drugs of choice dictated the type of music. And we won't speak of the 80's and 90's but you get the point. I'm all for the chill music, my favorite genre is southern rock blues rock but I do enjoy Pink Floyd led Zeppelin stuff like that

Not that my opinion means much but bird played too much. Trane too. Miles was slow and smooth. Same with cannonball. They all tried so hard to beat miles. And miles would come out with the most beautiful easy solo you’ve heard in your life. Watch video all those boys wanted to upstage miles but he always beat them with simple.
