In this documentary, Mr.T looks into how and why, a high percentage of Dominicans (especially in coastal regions), choose to scam, extort and victimize foreigners, whether it's tourists, investors or expats.
You will hear real-life stories of how these video guests, were violated by societies naturally programmed mentality of "group bullying", and scams and injustice by hospitals, lawyers, police, and the courts.
Not only will you hear the Gringo point of view, but also the view of a sharp Dominican gentleman.
A must watch video if you're thinking of either visiting or relocating to Dominican Republic (especially coastal areas like Sosua, Cabarete, Puerto Plata, Las Terrenas, Samana, and Boca Chica).

Hola Geo! Many thanks for both watching and for your humble comments. I like the saying "If the fish stinks, it stinks from the head!" and most bad behavior by masses of people (in any country), can be traced back to the country's corrupt Government and Police forces. Knowing there's Dominicans like you here, gives me hope that the corruption here can eventually be over-turned - again thanks for tuning in to my channel :) Saludos! Mr.T

Unfortunately or fortunately however you want to look at it, it discourages investment from people like me looking at vacation or permanent beach homes. Greatly appreciate the info though because you hardly ever get such an honest look at a place. Kudos to Mr. T!

I'm dominican and I lived in DR for 4 years, my parents and grandparents live there and I visit every year. So from my experience when it comes to an incident is the same for everyone. It doesn't matter where you are from. If you look like you're better off they will crowd around you and acuse you. You gotta be able to speak up for yourself in a respectful but firm way.

I am a Dominican living in the USA, an Ambulance took me to a Hospital because a had nausea and vomiting at the Hospital they gave me something to calm the nausea and vomiting . After 2 hours I was fine and went home, 2 weeks later the hospital bill came $2,700 dollars. That's what I call a rip off. I was double parked in NYC eventhough I was in the car I got a parking ticket $115 dollars. That's what I call a rip off. So, who is more greedy, rip off, ect..

Two wrongs don't make a "right" - If I was in Colombia producing a video about scams, then I would be doing the same thing, which is presenting "area relevant" warnings about typical scams for that tourist destination, trust me all scam areas on the planet needs someone to warn the innocent tourists. Actually you sound perfect for making a documentary about the scams in NYC - Go for it!

Relax Leo. For one thing, The parking regulations apply the same weather youre inside the car or not. Now, about the hospital bill. If you have no public medical insurance it means you are making a living and have private insurance which means you take the bill and send it to them. Nausea and vomiting is rough yes, but its not life threatening.

Despite all what you've shown in the negative way about DR it's one of the best island to spend a vacation or retirement. I agree on the police corruption and locals trying to get a pay day out of you but that's almost everywhere you go for retirement or vacation. . . Hi Steve, I suggest you keep watching a few more of my videos. Remember we can get in trouble in any country, the whole idea I have with producing these videos, is for folks to be able to arrive "street smart" so they can enjoy all the good sides and avoid the scammers. Once we have the right boundaries, awareness's, prices and communication techniques with the locals, then you sail on top of any BS that otherwise might have come your way. But whatever you chose, happy travels ahead! Brgds Mr.T

Love your videos T. I have learned a lot from watching your videos and sharing them every chance I get. I spend most of my time on the Eastern part of the island, but sure miss much of the fun I had up North. I think you are doing a good service by presenting both sides of the coin, an informed traveller is a safe traveller. Love D.R. and the only thing which at times take the fun out of the trips, is when you know that you are being shaken down and have only 2 choices; the easy way or the hard way 😒 Nice place, but the corrupt mentality which abounds makes you have to be looking over your shoulder constantly. Keep the videos coming👍

A guy put a carboard board over my windshield, he said I had to pay him despite me never asking him to put it there in the first place. So much scams in this country. Even the children pretend to be poor and rob people. Happened to me and my aunt once.
@EducatedTraveler
@EducatedTraveler 5 жыл бұрын
In Sosua, they rarely try to pull this kind of scam, but just 10 minutes up the road in Cabarete you really have to watch out. If some guy yells out that he wants to protect your car, then it's best to just say "ok, I'll give you tip, but you gotta be here when I come back or I won't owe you anything, so are you going to be here looking after it for sure?" then if he's gone upon your return, then you don't have to pay anything, and if he's there, then drop him RD25,- to RD50,- depending on how long you parked there. One guy once tried to hustle me for more, and I said "sure, but only if you can show me an official licence for you charging me money" and then he buggered off. Here their game is hustling, and we need to learn all the prevention lines and counter arguments to make them place you in the "too hard basket" and then you hardly ever get frustrated. Takes a good two years to learn how to handle all the BS. Brgds Mr.T

When you're in DR, if you're in the public eye, yes you will be approached by sellers, hustlers and beggars. If you're not interested, then simply give them a polite smile, shake your index finger from side to side a couple of times while saying "No gracias!" - short look only - then keep walking. If you're sitting, you might have to follow that up with "como dije, no, gracias amigo" (as I said, I'm not interested my friend) or say "No tengo dinero ahora!" (I don't have any money now)

Yes, here you can't afford to trust that someone else is protecting you as a motorist (including crossing at traffic lights), or assume that folks will be concerned about other drivers, motorbikes or pedestrians. Driving here is so much about pre-thinking every possible stupidity that others could cause towards you, from metal sticking out from the back of their trucks to taxi's slamming brakes and not pulling to the side, to hopefully score him RD30,- more for his pocket, not caring one bit if there are ten Mack trucks coming from behind at full speed. It's like most drivers here have the attitude "I'm the most important person on the road, so get the F!@# out of my way!!" One you realize this, then you will play it safer in many situations and avoid a lot of crazy situations. Drive safely :) Brgds Mr.T

I have thought a lot about traveling to the DR in March for 3 weeks or so. My spanish is conversational (although is far from a native) and I have a trustworthy Dominican contact in Santo Domingo. However, videos like yours - which I greatly appreciate - give me a lot of pause about going. Immediately I start wondering about how I will protect my belongings the whole trip and what if I end up in hospital for some reason. Mr T, do you have any advice about potential hospital situations and protecting your stuff?
@EducatedTraveler
@EducatedTraveler 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt, thanks for watching and for your nice comments! A golden rule is to always secure your valuables, both the ones you carry and the ones you might store in a Hotel room. Try not to pull piles of cash out, as many keen eyes are watching. And never lend any local anything, neither money or stuff, as seldom will you get it back. If you have a travel insurance, then use this in case of a hospital visit, or for a fair amount you can take out an insurance at any agent who represents the major insurance companies. Try stay away from private hospitals, as once they see you're a foreigner, then they wanna gouge you on the bill. I can recommend "Bournigal" hospital in Puerto Plata, as at least they'll give you a price upfront. Try not to use any in Sosua!! I hope that helps. Brgds Mr.T

I actually ended up going and had a great time! I mostly stayed in hostels and met many people that way. Also met many nice people from the country. That was the best part for me, all the nice people I met and traveled with. There were a few things about the country that wore me down a bit like people constantly asking me if I want to buy this or that, but overall good. I also ended up needed to use my travel insurance, had to go to a hospital after a friend crashed his scooter while I was on the back. Went for a little over 3 weeks and went all over the country

I have entertained the thought of renting a car so I could drive myself around instead of using taxis and motos. However , I feel that I am taking a huge risk in doing so BECAUSE of the possibility of this chicanery happening. I figure : "I'm on vacation. I'm here for a short time." Its seems easier to hire a cab driver and negotiate his services to be "on call" for the time I'm there than to risk losing vacation time AND money if I were to be involved in ANY kind of vehicular mishap. However,I am considering snow-birding there when I retire and if I'm going to be there for long stretches of time I WILL want to buy my own vehicle and drive myself. I am wondering if the EX-Pats have a "protective network" of people they can call if they get into an auto accident, such as a lawyer who will ACTUALLY defend you and not conspire with the "other side" and the judge to fleece you. I also wonder if having a camera in the car that records everything ( this is becoming prevalent in the States) would help in a Dominican court or if they would just throw it out or ignore it as evidence. I can definitely see how the guy who "hit" the moto driver got into that mishap. Moto drivers ignore all traffic "rules" and overtake other vehicles when they have no "right of way" to pass. It seems that the ability and willingness to drive like a macho maniac is a prerequisite if you want to drive in and between the towns along Highway 5.

I did have a short experience that could have been very dangerous. but that was my fault I forgot that the people was very poor and poor people are desperate and will do wrong things. It could be paradise but if the authorities are corrupt no way In hell I would move there. No matter how beautiful the surroundings are. There are a lot of other places more secure and safe.

you're right, a high percentage of Dominicans treat their beautiful Island as a dumpster, not caring about what it might do to tourism or the environment. Only efforts in collecting garbage are being seen in some places, but very quickly the roadsides are full again, and one never see's any road signs trying to educate or discourage littering. Many kids grew up among garbage (and playing with bottles etc...) so when they become adults it still seems all normal to them, and they just biff everything out the windows. A real shame to see on such an otherwise beautiful island.

R U referring to the island or the people? The island is beautiful now you decide who is to blame. Back home , places that were beautiful 20 years ago, now they are worse than a sty and we are suppose to have higher standards.

two wrongs don't make a right! This planet is full of beautiful scenic locations. Whether it's kept clean or if it becomes a dumpster/poison pit is very much up to us the people, our municipalities and Governments. Some nations have waste management down to a fine art. So what a country who's behind on this area needs to do, is to learn from the nations who have already overcome these challenges, and learn from and copy their systems, education, rules etc... and eventually this nation should achieve the same results.

As a Dominican American I see many of these situations when I visit, but please always enfasize that not all Dominicans are uneducated and unscrupulous. I come from a very large family of decent, educated and hard working people. Again, I know the Dominican society needs a lot of improvement.

Hola Alex. If I produced a documentary i.e. about why many Canadians migrate to Dominican Republic, wouldn't it be weird if some Canadian person reminded me to always point out, that there is actually educated and honest Canadians out there?

Hi Kenamaro, many thanks for watching! You're absolutely right, and if folks have the awareness of what the potential risks and pitfalls are, then hopefully they can make a fully informed decision as to how deep they want to get connected to the place i.e. only for vacation, visit part time or taking the full plunge to settle here - all based on their own situation in life, priorities, finances, other location options etc... Take care! Brgds Mr.T

Nobody goes to Luperon anymore due to the thieves and the Commandante etc. The average boat spends about 1000 bucks a month so to have 200 boats in the harbor is a nice earner. They have thrown this all away. I had a couple of operations in Santiago at the Union Medica del Norte. I got charged a very good rate and treated very well. I dropped my DT on top of the border down south and had to walk a long way to get out. The Dominicans helped me to get to the bus in Santo Domingo to get home to Luperon. They even found my bike weeks later, called me and after I paid everyone off I got it back. The police charged me 1000pesos for keeping it in the cell till I got there. In tyhe outlying villages you have to find the priest to help you. He has a lot of sway with the fiscal.

He had a spare cell phone which he had in the beach bag with other valuables, his newest cell, he only took with him around town, this is the one that he informed me got stolen. The scum bags that robbed him, have stolen from many others at the same beach over time, and they have have broken into cars and robbed items as well. Only one place they deserve to sit, and that's behind bars!

especially where tourists and expats visit, the general mentality towards us is "what can I get out of you today!". This of-course scares people away from returning and recommending - a lesson most still have to learn here, and when the long slow season kicks in, they all complain that there's not enough tourists - Well we know why!

Hi there and thanks for watching! Most of my footage is filmed with a Samsung device, then in the editing program I enhance light and colors, and for the most it looks better than what comes from my Cannon - technology has truly given us amazing camera's in even the smallest devices. In regards to adding Spanish text, your friends can simply switch on the translation function in KZfaq when watching the video, and if they have the phone language setting set to Spanish, then the text should appear automatically. Educated Traveler I recently shared your video on a popular expat blog, since I thought your videos are fair and balanced, but it seems that many expats who live there, for some reason choose to live with rose colored glasses on. I stated that you have many videos highlighting the positive things about the island and even posted a few of the more positive ones as proof, but I feel that life has both good and bad. I think you are doing a great job with your videos by creating awareness of both the good and bad points of D.R. living and if your videos help at least one visitor in avoiding the many pitfalls which abound, then the video has served it's purpose. Keep doing what you are doing and thank you for creating awareness.🙏 Be blessed. One last question? Why would expats react that way to a video which was obviously created to help them?
@EducatedTraveler
@EducatedTraveler 6 жыл бұрын
Hi again, and many thanks for sharing my videos and for your heartfelt compliments!! To answer your question: Well many who still have their Rosy colored glasses on, and are quick to defend the Dominicans, as many have either met some of the good Dominicans and therefore forget that it's the bad Dominicans that keep repeating the scams that I'm trying to address, and these culprits keep getting away with it as not many are warning them about the specifics, or the gullible tourists overall vacation away from -30 + snow simply just made DR the better place to be. Also many people don't like the truth or the harsh reality of just how many scams and robberies go on in DR, so they try to water it down. However I've also experienced many of them waking up, however it takes most folk being ripped off 2-3 times / incidences before they start understanding just how high a percentage of the locals, that are actually willing to commit crimes against us when an opportunity presents itself. Especially one Canadian couple who gave me a hard time being so direct about the facts, a week later got attacked by armed robbers one evening as the turned off the highway, and they had to literally run the robbers down with the car to escape. After this they quickly flew back to Canada and wrote me an e-mail saying "you were right - we've had our rosy colored glasses ripped off our faces". In DR it's best for a foreigner to remember that "we have no rights" cause mostly we don't and also that "Most Dominicans from the shoe-shine boy to the president gang up on the Gringo" when it's time for justice to prevail, and then it therefore doesn't prevails - sad but true! Brgds Mr.T

sadly this is all true. But people are forced to be this way because of the lack of government help in the further provincias of the country that are far away of the city, in creating good jobs,etc....
@EducatedTraveler
@EducatedTraveler 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting! In my opinion, no-one is ever forced to commit scams on other folks, especially not long-term. And when I think back on the hard work, hours, commitment and risk I devoted from a stage of being broke to being in the green financially, then when I meet poor people who can't be bothered to fight for their own progress and "bootstrap" themselves to achieve a better life, income, assets etc... then I don't feel so sorry for them. Many times when you offer them advise or opportunities, then they reject it, as they would rather you feel sorry for them and give them a free hand-out! very sad that folks let themselves go that way. Then we hear success stories of people coming from the poorest villages in Ethiopia and later becoming super models in New York - "Ya gonna wanna!" like the Australians say. Anyway, I like helping folk who are willing to learn when it's their turn, and who's willing to help themselves. When DR rids themselves of their corrupt Government, and run their country to help create opportunities, create a wealthy middle class and educate their people correctly, only then things will boom here. You are right, as in Colombia, they prioritized education, and in general one experience a much more civilized behavior, whether it's in regards to littering, lowering their headlights when driving or ambition + integrity in business and so on... The DR Government likes to keep their population as uneducated as possible, and it all comes back to the corruption stemming from the top down.
