Having a doctor that can relate to you on a real human level makes them better doctors.

In most cases, probably yes, although its not a statistically proven fact. But in situations, where even the slightest of emotional investment could result in tragedy and death (for example neurosurgery or spinalsurgery), its strictly forbidden and decreases performance

it makes them better news givers, not "doctors". A great doctor is someone who can identify the problem.

My son has a pediatrician years ago that was in a wheelchair. We adored him, he listened, to me, (I have a physical disability.) He encouraged my son to explain what was going on with him and what he needed, instead of having some adult talk over him. And when someone called DCFS because they didn't think a single mother with a physical disability could take care of a child, he defended me. It meant the world to me.

More people like that doctor needs to exist, too many who are on their keyboards saying that people with disabilities should not be able to have kids its very stressing to me as a person with disability, my mother agrees with those people who think im not fit to take care of a child but I do not care i know that when i have that stable job,and a stable economy and a man who will not treat me wrong and when we are ready we will have a kid then she and others will be proven wrong and will have to sorry to say this but will learn the hard way to shut the fuck up as they have when people have labled me wrong, said i would not surpass or be much and yet im here I thank God every day that im alive. Try to not let your disability define you as a person and never believe those who say as a person with disability how unfit they think you are to have children and be safe.

My skin doctor is also in a wheel chair. He is so nice and friendly and positively different from other doctors, I would never think to go somewhere else instead. I'm happy to have found him :-). I can only encourage people with a disability to become physicians if they wish so. Patients will trust and like you even more because you are already visibly a strong fighter who knows about highs and lows in life and health. Greetings from Germany.

Dr. Sexton has the same disability as me. I also have spastic diplegia. I also want to become a doctor. His story is so inspiring and gives me comfort that I can do anything if I put my mind into it. And to those people who think that people that have the mentality that people w/ disabilities can’t be independent and have normal lives, you’re WRONG. We have the same dreams and hopes as you do, and please, do not feel pity for us. Our disability helps become stronger and a better person to help those in need ❤️

This story gives so many people hope where there seems to be no hope as this story makes it feel like disabled people who feel so useless quite useful and gives them so much hope. Just because you’re disabled doesn’t mean that your mind is.; makes my disability seem so insignificant though. I’d be so proud to have you as my doctor as you have feelings like everyone else. I wish you nothing less than the best life has to offer and for following your dream to become a doctor ; You have a heart of gold. Your determination and willpower is what allowed you to keep going and follow through with your dream and lead a successful life. GOD BLESS YOU 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

But the fact that he still put in all the time for college, med school, residency, while having a crazy disability as not being able to walk ??? He can’t do what we are lucky enough to do. You think it’s just easy to be someone with no feeling or movement from the waist down? We are blessed to be healthy. He is a hero for his perseverance and will to keep going with his life and being as successful as he is. So yeah he’s “special”

I take my hat off to these doctors. Why should a disability stop you from doing something that you want. I can relate to all of these doctors. I too have a disability. I was born with a speech impediment and I suspect that I may also be Autistic. Right throughout my school years all of my teachers told me that I was dumb and stupid, and just give up. They told me that I will never be able to go to university, as that was a place for the highly intelligent which according to them I wasn't. Ever since I was very young I dreamed of going to university. I LOVE forensic science. I at the end of my school years gave up my dream to go into university, as I believed that I was to dumb. Now years later, my dream came back to me, as I discovered that I was extremely gifted in psychology. And now I am going through university a place which I was told that I would never go to, and yet here I am, and I am flourishing. I really enjoy psychology, and in particular Neuro Psychology which to me is a peace of cake, and yet my peers all struggle in that subject. Hech, in one of the presentations, I actually got told to dumb things down as it was at a level of either a Masters or PhD student and not a bachelors degree. I hated dumbing it down to me it wasn't answering the question, but I reluctantly did so. My group was one point shy of getting a perfect score for that presentation, and it was all thanks to me. I know this because the teacher asked us, "Could this patient have another form of dementia other the Wrenkler Kosicove syndrome?" I answered the question, "I said yes." And I explained that it could be vascular dementia, as both diseases effect the blood vessels within the brain. The patient smoke marijuana in his youth, and abused alcohol. I made the entire class including the teacher to drop their mouths, they couldn't believe in how much I knew of these disease, and the general roots for them. All of this from an idiot. I hope to one day become a doctor in forensic neuro psychology.

I work as a CNA in an assisted living facility and I have had quite a few health challenges as well as a physical and mental disability. I think that having my disabilities I can understand more of what my residents are going through and that I can be a lot more empathetic and a lot more caring then some other people who are in the same field. These doctors absolutely amaze me. I actually had a psychologist tell me at 19 but if I ever went to college I would set myself up to fail now I'm a CNA.

We need better doctors like these two guys right here they are the true MVPs instead of judgmental and rude ones who say you cant and won't be worth it. Makes me sad to see that as long as we have these guys and more like them it's a miracle 😢

When people use discouraging remarks when they see pleople who have a great story pertaining to adversity- this only speaks hallmarks to your character and values. We all can’t strive without a struggle... sometimes dealing with struggles a lot of people defeat themselves and wind up a statistic... and a space to their own misery. Great video- 👍🏻

I'd much rather have a doctor who literally cant see me but listens, than a doctor who can see me but doesnt listen. I'd say most of us have had an experience where it feels like your talking to a wall when talking to some doctors. Active listening is so very important for patients.
