I used to pay my mom cause she was very poor and worked part time as a laundry attendant where she could sit a lot. My then husband was mad about it but his mother wouldn't help. Glenda I was 17 when I had my first baby in 1973. I remember having that gas when delivering my son. I was unmarried because I was to young to get married and living at home with my parents. I had no help because my dad said you have to learn to do this yourself since you got yourself in this predicament cause my mom had her own kids to raise. When I got married and moved out at 18 I was pregnant again and my kids are 10 1/2 months apart. I had a part time job and I asked my mom if she could come and watch the kids for an hour cause my husband had to stay overtime. My dad told her to say no. I only had this job for two weeks and was fired cause I couldn’t come in. They said I wasn’t dependable. It hurt me but I got over it. It was how they were raised and I forgave them. It was they saying you had them you take care of them. I held no hate. I love and miss my parents to this day. I learned to help with my grandkids but here I am 65 and working a full time job waiting to retire in December when I’m 66 and 2 months. I’m mad because they keep upping the retirement age. Not everyone is guaranteed a long life why couldn’t it be 65 for everyone and affordable to live on. Have a great day.

I’m sure Jill would be willing to help out with the gas. I don’t think it’s too much to ask especially since you babysit 3 times a week. If she had to pay for childcare for 2 children she would have to pay a lot more than a tank of gas!! Also it’s ware and tear on your car. I have 5 grandchildren and when they were little I would help my boys out babysitting, taking the grandchildren to their practices after school, and having them overnight on the weekends. I never asked for anything in return because I absolutely loved spending time with them. I worked full time for the State of Ohio so along with my income and my husband’s we were able to help the our boys out. But if I had been in your situation it would be different because it’s getting harder and harder for my husband and myself to make things work with our combined retirement income each month. I’m 73 and he is 77 and life nowadays is not easy for us seniors. Our income doesn’t go up just as prices do. We’re having to really cut corners. Our kids ask us when they call “ what did you and dad do this weekend?” Our answer is pretty much the same “we stayed home” Honestly I don’t mind because we aren’t the type couple that has to be always doing something with other people to be happy. We just enjoy relaxing and going out to eat once in a while to a family restaurant. We’re easy to please ..lol☺️ Anyway Glenda ...you will NEVER be like your mother . Asking for a little assistance is not being like her...it’s the life we’re living in right now . That’s all. Period. Hope this helped. Love sent from Florida😊

@@jeanchittum1677 Many places are cheaper than Cali, but it takes money to move. More money depending on how far you're going. They have to do this while simultaneously taking care of the day to day, paying bills/managing debt, coping with random setbacks, and doing research/planning on where to move, and hopefully still trying to live in the moment (there is more to life than just working).

It will be announced this October (2021) how much the Social Security increase will be for 2022. It's projected the Social Security raise will be between 5-6% (a guesstimate). ALSO CONGRESS MAY LOOK AT: 1) Ways to control drug costs for seniors; 2) Possible vision coverage; 3) Possible dental coverage; & 4) Possible hearing coverage. Depending on where you live & how close you nearest Walmart is you may save gas money if you buy their $8 monthly grocery delivery plan. You can avoid driving in bad weather and keep you safe. I believe there is a $35.00 sales purchase, but given prices that won't be hard to do.

I totally understand why you don't want to ask Jill for gas money. You are a wonderful mother and grandmother, and you are doing what a mother/grandmother should do. My situation is a little different. When I broke my wrist, I could no longer work at my job, because it was manual labor and required 2 hands. The company had no benefits, no sick time, no nothing. So all I had was the small amount I had in savings, which wasn't much. However, at the time I broke my wrist, my son was on vacation from his regular job, and he was starting up a business. He was planning on going back to his regular job and let his wife run the business. He said he didn't know what he was going to do for a babysitter, but after I broke my wrist and couldn't go back to that manual labor job anytime soon, he said I could babysit his daughter and he would pay me instead of paying daycare. I also babysit my daughter's kids, but I take no pay from her, because she doesn't make much. I am saving her a ton of money, because she doesn't have to pay daycare. So, my full-time job is babysitting grandkids. My son pays me through the business account, with taxes taken out, so everything is legal. Sometimes I feel bad about my son paying me, but I do babysit full-time, and at this point, I can't get a job, because my kids need me to babysit. And I'm not old enough for Social Security; I'm not disabled, so I don't get any type of disability check; I get no check, no pension, no retirement, no nothing. And on top of that, ex-husband left me in severe credit card debt - I'm paying that off - I know, I could have filed bankruptcy and got out of the debt, but my ethics (I think that's the word for it) would not allow me to file bankruptcy - my conscious would not let me file bankruptcy. I almost did, though - it would have been a very last resort. Anyway, back to the babysitting, yes, I do think a person should be a good mom and grandma. And as soon as I get old enough to get Social Security, I will not take any pay from my son.

If you were watching the grandchildren so your daughter and husband could have a night out occasionally that is one thing, however once it is a committed situation then I believe you should be paid. If you weren't available then someone else would be doing it and they would be paid. I think if my mom was struggling financially, I would offer help whether she was babysitting for me not. It is very reasonable to ask for the cost of gas to get back and forth to Jill's house. Some help with groceries, too? I know this is a very uncomfortable conversation to have, but I know the way you present it to Jill will be gentle and sincere. I'm praying for you 🙏

Glenda you brought back so many memories of when I was a single mother struggling. I still have resentments. Because my X mother in law was the babysitter. Her son was a mommas boy and didn't pay child support. She had her husband who worked as a pipefitter at a big corporation. She was always in need. So I paid her the same I would of paid a babysitter. I hated it and she never said No I can't accept money for taking care of my own grandson. She took the money that I couldn't afford. I think now why did'nt I tell her ask your son to pay this week. Or whats wrong with I have no money this week. I was so stupid back then and no back bone like I do today. I'm glad you brought up that topic cause I was able to heal a little more by writting this down. My mom would have nothing to do with it.

GLENDA!!! Sit down with Jill and tell her exactly what you need! I don't know how far you live from her, but by the highway signs I know you do not live that close! I feel a tank of gas A WEEK is not unreasonable!! $40 a week is not a lot for two people working, because if they had to pay for child care, they would have to pay a fee X2 children!! A lot more than $40 dollars a week! People(Jill and Husani) cannot know what you need if you don't speak up!! Would Husani's family ask for gas money if they were coming back and forth to babysit multiple times a week(maybe not asking for money for the babysitting, but definitely for the transportation!) I could see if it was only one day a week every once in a while, but it is multiple times a week and sometimes an extra day that was not planned! You do not live around the corner!! Instead of buying you blouses and clothes on her credit card ( which I know she does not mind doing) have her give you that money that she would've spent so you can buy gas! Maybe she thinks that these extra things make up for not paying you! She won't know unless you tell her! Show her your gas bill for a full month of babysitting, money that you have to spend even though you do not get a salary!! Maybe she would rather pay you a little something every day that you sit for her instead of giving you gas money all at once?? And if she agrees to any money, put it away and only use it for gas! Then you can't complain when you don't have gas money if you use it for anything else intending to replace it!! (replacing it never works! Borrowing from Peter to pay Paul never works! Paul never gets paid back!!Lol!) So have the talk with Jill and show her what you use in gas going back and forth--- take the mileage round trip to her house X the price per gallon of gas = what you pay EACH day for gas and then X that by how many days you babysit = total amount you pay for gas that week!! Use that amount unless gas goes up or down a considerable amount! Good luck and have a blessed day! ( you might be a child of your mother, but you do not have to REMAIN a child of your mother!! You are a grown, intelligent woman who came this far in life on your own ideas and by your own mistakes, not your mother's!! Live your life, not the life you think your mother would have you live!! Every time you start to think of negative thoughts of your upbringing, STOP and say, " NOPE- NOT TODAY!" My daughter has a shirt that says that! I laugh every time I see it!!) Blessings and strength are what I wish for you!

Glenda I personally feel a mother, father or both whom have brought their child(ren) into this world with lots of love, hardwork, and didn’t shift their responsibilities, definitely deserve our help as their children, especially now. The grandchildren are in good care and if it weren’t for you, the money would go to a daycare due each month or week, no different than you. As grandmother, you are sacrificing again for their well-being and not being selfish about it. Therefore, I do believe if you have a conversation with your daughter and explain where you are and that you’re not asking as much as a daycare would, I believe it is not out of order nor should you feel guilty about doing so. Prayers

This is reality for so many. It truly is sad to see seniors struggling to make ends meet. So many worked so hard all their lives, in not only raising families but working. Those days, most mothers stayed home while the dad went to work. Often a pension plan wasn't offered in many of the jobs. Saving money for retirement was really out of the question, as it took dad's pay to cover monthly costs of raising a family and having a home. So now the parents are retired and needing social security to live on. The way I am able to help you out with some extra income is by streaming your video's for several hours a day. I pick a playlist and play it in the background with the volume muted. It adds extra watch hours and views to your analytics and in the end adds some extra YT income for you. If everyone could do that once a day, for an hour or two it would really help you out. Thanks for sharing... these video's can help many others. Enjoy your weekend.. 💖

I live 3 hours away from my daughter and 2 granddaughters, so I would drive down to see them (this was when I was still in my 60's), and she would just slip me $20 for gas when I left. I didn't expect it, but appreciated it! I have no doubt that Jill would pay for your gas, since it seems that you have quite a way to drive (and cross bridges) to get to her house. I think the easiest way to handle that situation is to tell her You don't think you will be able to keep the kids anymore because the gas is just too much and being on a fixed income is straining your finances. I think she would then realize it is costing you to watch them. Sometimes they probably just dont realize its costing you money. I dont know if this helps but...My Mother was on Humana Gold Plus (that takes the place of Medicare) and they gave her a grocery card..for $50 a month and a OTC (over the counter) card for $50 month. You dont pay for Humana because they are taking the place of Medicare. It sure came in handy with my Mother. I just turned 59 and my husband is 62 and girl we both are still working. I sure understand where your coming from!!!!!

I enjoy watching your videos. My daughter has 6 children and I have always babysat for free for when they have date night, etc. She is a stay at home mom. The older 3 also came to my in home half day preschool program 2 yrs ea for free. That alone would have cost them $16k. As I've gotten older, I have babysat less and less. She has never offered to pay gas or anything since $ is tight for them living on her husbands teacher salary. I have basically quit going over to see them very often because frankly I'm tired of always being the one doing the giving. When our car broke down a wk ago and had to be towed, she let us use one of their cars for 3 days but needed it back so when our car was finally ready, we walked to the mechanic shop to get it. She was too busy to take us. I know she appreciates the help but like I said, I'm tired of always being on the giving end. I hope I'm around long enough to see how she handles babysitting grandkids from 6 children. I love my grandkids to pieces but I just had thyroid cancer surgery and am 67. I don't have the energy like I did 5-10 yrs. ago. We are basically on our own to get thru ea. day now. I would think Jill should realize the gas it is costing you plus the wear and tear on your car to go back and forth and would insist on giving you even $100 a mo. which is nothing compared to if she had to pay elsewhere for childcare for 2 children. What we older folks consider to be common sense of how to handle a situation seems to fly right over the younger generations heads. Maybe we just made life way to easy for them that they don't even think about such things? I wish you well and keep putting out videos for others to enjoy and learn from.

I have never asked my daughter for money for child care but I know that, if I did, she would pay me in a wink. So would Jill. My mother-in-law watched my kids while I was in nursing school. I was struggling back then, and she never expected any payment. However, she was not retired and did not need the money at that time now that she’s older and in retirement if they ever came to me and just said they are struggling, my husband and I are in a position where we could help them. We wouldn’t necessarily pay them for babysitting but we would just help them. ❤

I know it's hard to have to ask but they are getting so much more than just the Babysitting in return that is priceless. My d-i-l always asks me if I "need anything from town" which is code for "if you won't take money, I will get you sour cream, diet dr pepper, etc"😂 It would be hard for me to ask for money, but then I always have them at my house, which wouldn't involve travel.

He is slightly autistic, was the stay at home parent and he needed me. No one generally will keep him at a job, but I went with him, explained his issues up front and he's doing good. He actually starts a new job Monday at Walmart distribution. And it is supposed to pay well. Pray with me He is able to do what is asked of him. He just got full temporary custody of his 2 children. We are struggling. We are on disability, so once the money is gone, it's gone for the month. Groceries are hard to come by with the rose in costs of near everything. Food, gas, etc. It's hard. My husband would send home money from the Airforce. My mom and dad told me to save it they’d give us money for food, diapers and baby food. I never realized how blessed blessed I was to have them. I was only 19 when I had Chris. My delivery was hard too. They gave me pain shots. My son was born in 1970 and my daughter In 1972. When I brought Chris home I too didn’t know what to do. The US has become 70% dependent on consumer spending alone to drive its economy. No longer employed in full-time jobs , w/ benefits, workers get caught between declining purchasing power and rising health care costs. Many workers additionally suffer under a global 'wage race to the bottom' as corporations seek the low cost supplier (wherever they may be off shore). The Middle class has become a "vanishing class".

@@glendasully If things did not become bad enough for US workers, displaced workers were told this is the 'way of things'...its all 'Creative Destruction', remember that 'phrase'!

Glenda, I think our Mothers came from the same school of thought. My mother didn't understand breastfeeding and she said she would never do it because she wasn't an animal like a cow. So I didn't breastfeed my first son but my other two I did because I was old enough by then to realize I didn't care what she thought and that it was cheaper and healthier. I hope things get easier for you and everyone in the near future, Take care.
