Hey guys in this video I talk about the difference between trends I see online and trends that I see in person. They're completely different and in reality, nobody in person cares about clothes as much as us (people who watch fashion videos online lol)
This video was inspired by Laini Ozark's video on the same topic: • real life vs. online t...

That is why, I don’t understand how some people might conclude that the trend cycle is moving too fast, when people in real life are still wearing the same things they wore a few years ago. Only people from the internet have moved on with these trends.

Sometimes I worry about not being fashionable enough but then I realize that 90% of the people I see in real life are just wearing jeans/leggings and a shirt or sweater. If you spend too much online it can make you feel like everyone is super trendy and cool when most people are just dressing simply and comfortably. I still follow online trends but I’ve started to just wear whatever I want rather than worry about if my outfit is Pinterest/instagram worthy.

Yes!!!! This used to be me. And THEN I moved to a tiny town in the middle of nowhere where everyone is literally 10 years + behind. If you wear stuff that's outdated by a few years everyone will ask if you're from out of town haha. I used to think that I was expressing myself through my clothing but now I feel like I actually am- because I feel like I have the freedom to not follow trends at all and I wear things that I still like that are like 7 years old. No one's tastes change as quickly as the internet in real life. If you really like something you'll probably like it for years or forever. I loved peplums in 2011 but stopped wearing them when they went out. In 2020 I pulled out a peplum and started wearing it again. I styled it different but I love wearing them idc... Now they're back though so that's fun. But yeah I got compliments on my peplum lmaooo

It’s so weird to see new trends pop up so often- like clean girl & the new mob wife aesthetic trend- just a few years ago aesthetics appeared and stuck around for a while. Indie & soft girl aesthetics were so major even though they’ve faded, people still draw from them. Me personally I tend to still style myself from what was trendy in 2017/2019 from what I liked, and occasionally take inspiration from newer trends but I never throw out my entire closet to start a new aesthetic. The trend cycle now, online anyways, is so fast people aren’t even developing their own styles they’re just picking up trends and throwing them away when they’re “out of style”.

@@FoundSheep-AN I still wear high rise, even though low rise has come back into style, & the mid-2010’s very 80’s/90’s focused, while now y2k is the main inspiration for a lot of people, so I tend to still draw from 90’s trends rather than the newer stuff. I don’t know how to really describe it but there hasn’t been a huge shift for me personally in what I try to dress like. Maybe it’s because I know what I like so I’m not searching for entire new aesthetics to try.

@@FoundSheep-AN As someone who was born in 95 and have seen all the styles that are being trendy now, being in trend the first time, and fashion is a very personalise thing. Something that is trendy now, doesn´t mean that it will look flattering on you. For example, the mob wife aesthetic. I live in Vienna, Austria, a city that is more known for culture and history than fashion. I´ve seen girls trying to dress like a mob wife, and it unfortunately looks very unflattering. However, there are people who look great in this aesthetic and also look very classy ergo rich Russian women. In Vienna, they love to go shopping in downtown. And they look fantastic in fur, because they style it right and their makeup doesn't look cheap, even though it is also full glam. Just because something is in trend, doesn't mean it is for you. Fashion is very personalised and if you know what kind of style and cuts suits you, you know what current trend is for you.

I mostly hang out in alt fashion spaces in person and online tho so I have to rely on videos like this to know what’s “mainstream”. Though I’m not sure mainstream fashion truly exists anymore. But it gets cold enough to wear those for like a week here, and I cannot justify spending $200+ on a jacket that I'll wear like once a year (but every time I see it in my closet it will make me smile). Yeah, I'll stick with the one I got from H&M like 5 years ago for $30. If I lived somewhere cold I'd buy one in a heartbeat though... Yesssss!! I often think about this topic when people online, specifically influencers, are constantly switching up their style to always be on top of the trend cycle. But then again, they're influencers and I have to remind myself that it's literally their job to show us what's new all the time. I bet a lot of them hardly rewear outfits because of the amount of clothing they have. That mindset is not practical in the real world because everyone re-wears their clothes constantly. It's all definitely interesting to think about.

I think this vid also meshes well with tourism and expectations of famously known areas due to “fashion and trends”. As someone who lives in LA the stuff you mentioned you would see irl is pretty accurate to what people wear here and it’s kinda funny how you can spot the tourist or chronically online person so easily bc 90% of LA does not dress like it’s fashion week or like all those current trends. It is rly only seen in the Fairfax/Rodeo hipster trendy rich areas that people dress like that but for online trends that can be seen in person are mostly baggy jeans and jorts.

I highly agree with your points, also what's on the street highly depends on what country you live in. For example I personally don't think Mob Wife and skinny bottoms are gonna turn into a mainstream trend until Winter 24-25 if it even survives even in the big cities that are fashion oriented.

I live in east LA, in a working-class neighborhood that is mostly black and latino, and I still see a lot of people, even younger people, wearing skinny jeans. When I go to west LA and am around more upper-class people, I see the chronically online look much more (e.g., baggy jeans, chunky dad sneakers, etc). But, yeah, a lot of people online really have no sense of self--they hop on the latest trends and just follow whatever the algorithm tells them.

This is one of the downsides to algorithms:/ if I’m not actively remembering I begin to think that everyone’s (and I’m referring to my irls) Pinterest/tiktok looks the same, it also doesn’t help that my internet friends are also made in those highly curated virtual spaces!!!!! So I think everyone is wearing and doing the exact same thing until I log off

I think it also depends on location. In BELGIUM: The suade tall boots you don't see in Belgium at all. Interesting. Those furry coats you don't see as much (not long or short), it's all long coats or down jackets. The darker less distressing jeans you see more than lighter wash/rips nowadays. Designer things with big logos aren't really popular here, also no really really tiny bags. The belt bags are also popular tho. Almost no people wear dresses or skirts at all here, so it's difficult to compare those. Speaking of leather jackets, you do seem more of the motorcycle jackets. The block heel is also indeed more popular here.

I think the reason there’s such a discrepancy between the fashion we see online and in-person is because the online space is so saturated with fashion “leaders” (i.e. the folks who are first to adopt new trends and experiment before some of their ideas trickle into the mainstream). The algorithm tends to favor attention-catching content, so it makes sense that the newest fashions make up most fashion-minded people’s feeds! The mainstream “fashion followers,” the ones who are wearing already accepted trends (typically in a more practical way than with haute couture or fashion influencers) tend to get pushed back in the algorithm, even if their style is super cute and trendy outside of social media. My guess is more practical versions of some of the “online” trends will come into mainstream style over the next couple years, and I’m very excited to see where it goes :)

Since there are so many trends, most of which aren't adopted by the majority of people, I feel there is a lot more freedom in how you choose to express your taste now. A lot of the stuff that’s trending in person has been around for years. Shorter denim shorts, have staying power and are like a classic. Yet, those suede knee high boots are considered out of style online but are still popular among the age group that were following the trend when they first popped up or a different fashion region style. Yes, it is the case that trends are born in subcultures (internet) which are picked up by trend forecasting companies, who sell it to fashion brands who sell it retailers. So yes it takes 1-2 years for average Martha to adopt something. And by then it's already old fashion. What you are seeing irl are outdated trends. If you are urban outfitters you follow the trend forecasting, if you are target you follow sales

I work in a department store and you are so right about the designer bags. As a pretty ‘online’ person (I don’t really obsess over following trends, I have my own style but I do watch a lot of fashion content) I would NEVER wear some of the obviously branded bags even if I could afford them lol. We sell so many Marc Jacobs tote bags and I will never understand why. It’s like paying to be a walking advertisement for the brand 😂 I prefer to have my own style which sure, I admit is not completely original and does have some influence from online trends but is ultimately more intentional and enjoyable than what I see ‘offline’ people wear. Even if I look ‘weird’ and ‘online’ to ‘normal people’ I know I am probably having more fun than them.

Having followed fashion mags since 15, and never having that kind of cash, i would mostly shop thrift, picking up similar pieces, often simply by shopping in a men's, or kid's section for the new fit or cut. The quality alone was SO much better than the mall. Though at that time the Limited was here.. the only shop (pop. 60,000) showing anything really stylish and well made. (They slipped badly, later.). i would invest in a piece or 2, and mix it with vintage or second hand... I loved my wardrobe, and made a point of dressing smart, especially at night . My style isn't extreme unless you live in Podunk Nowhere. One night someone slithered over and said, snidely, "you don't dress like anyone here". I smiled and said "No. You're right. I dress well.." As a displaced New Yorker, i still felt no need to dress badly simply because everyone else was. Life is too short. Or maybe it's just the NYC attitude. Once a New Yorker ALWAYS a New Yorker...
